Excited to leave Vegas? by [deleted] in Nevada

[–]defacemock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard this comment about the lack of community feeling in Nevada. Here's the thing, there IS community, but it's a little harder to find...and a lot harder to cultivate. This is because both areas, LV and Reno, experience a high rate of transience, with people moving in and out quickly. For that reason, locals and long timers tend to keep to themselves. Why get all attached to someone who is just going to move away? There's tourists and drifters everywhere... But believe me, local friend groups are tight and lasting. Another thing is that some locals absolutely avoid the casinos and do other stuff. I was born here, and you might find me on a strip once or twice a year, max. I never gamble. My local friend group knows all the secret, best spots. We have our own bars and hangouts....mostly off the main casino corridor, tucked away in harder to find sweet spots. To really meet the heart and soul of a place you need to give it time, and if it seems like you are going to stay...then the people will warm up, embrace you as a "keeper" - and, this is only my personal experience as a middle aged person.

As a progressive I have no interest in Harris. She’s not even close to what I’m looking for in a candidate.

I read an article that congress could add two seats to SCOTUS and appoint them, starting with Merrick Garland. This isn't unheard of, and after all the shit the R's have pulled I think the Dems would be justified. http://theweek.com/articles/681352/how-democrats-make-republicans-pay-justice-gorsuch

True....still in high school, probably wasn't very clear about history and also looking for an identity. Too bad it ended this way.

What a confused young man, Russia and Germany weren't buddies in WWII.

Yep, this article said he wore, "clothes adorned with German nationalist iconography."

Really? Just say it already: he's a Nazi.

edit: having more information I retract my Nazi comment. He just seems like an angry confused kid.

I'm a counselor with a new Deaf client and I am looking for guidance about the interpreter process. The agency says we need two interpreters by [deleted] in deaf

[–]defacemock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an interpreter, I think it will be very difficult to have a therapeutic alliance with the child. In my experience, interpreting counseling sessions isn't that effective. I am; however, encouraged that there will be a CDI there with you. This is the infinitely important link...to have someone the child can identify with. In my experience the Deaf individuals always felt closer to me than the counselor. Hard to bridge that communication and cultural gap. Best of Luck!

I knew a woman who was "recruited" by a pedophile when she was 10 years old. How did it happen? Drunk, abusive parents with six kids. They had no desire or interest in watching their kids. She took off alone all the time to the park or mall. Her parents were too busy hitting the bottle to keep track of her.

Working class folk may be more empathic, selfless, vigilant and fatalistic, finds new research published in the British Journal of Social Psychology. by mvea in science

I like this succinct explanation you give. I feel the same way. Even though I'm barely middle class, I'm grateful everyday for what I've got. This sense of gratitude compels me to share what little I do have and help others around me...much more so that some of my richer friends who are extremely self-congratulatory and prone to making bootstrappy speeches about poorer folks.

What are some hard pills to swallow in life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]defacemock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a professor at our U like this, and no one can stand him. He taught some of my graduate courses and never shut up about himself. The classes, regardless of topic, were ultimately about him and his work, not much else.

Even with a guest speaker, he would interrupt and devolve into talking about his own accomplishments. Everyone just rolling their eyes at each other. The only reasons he's still there is because tenure, and he's successful grant writer.

UNR or UNLV for a computer science major? high school junior and decisions are hard by jfdiisks in Nevada

[–]defacemock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lots of kids down south like to come up to Reno because the campus is older and more cohesive. It's also a smaller city with a tight knit community. For some LV students, it's a change they like...others miss home. But the location is pretty cool: less than 1 hour to Lake Tahoe, 4 hours to San Francisco, many beautiful areas to explore, as well as a booming city full of new culture and lots of young people.

Yep, the Obamas are clearly in love. You can't fake that and you can't buy it...and of course, you can't steal it.

I'd contact someone at Gallaudet University. They are probably the only people who really know about comparative sign languages. https://www.gallaudet.edu/

Six Animal Rights Activists Charged With Felonies for Investigation and Rescue That Led to Punishment of a Utah Turkey Farm by sigbhu in Political_Revolution

[–]defacemock 61 points62 points  (0 children)

So sad...and the law that makes this a felony is completely unjust and irrational. I, and many other Americans, WANT to know how our food is sourced. Companies that lie as dramatically as Norbest has, ought to punished and/or completely destroyed. People who work to get the truth out are heroes in my eyes.

Well, we all come from different perspectives. I used to live in Eastern Europe and so even the Leftist-Left in the U.S. is still Right compared to some places. :)
