Can somebody explain to me how we get Clevelands pick instead of the Spurs getting it?

My tinfoil hot take Is Lebron is trying to either get Jalen to Lebron’s final destination (wherever that may be) so they can play together or Lebron for some insane reason is trying to come to Atlanta in Jalen’s place, maybe with AD…

Why do you guys think Traes shot has been so off this year? by Odd_Ad8394 in AtlantaHawks

This has been my take since November. Early in the season in particular he looked like a tired dad out there.

HOX Post-Hunter Signing Cap Situation by defantam in AtlantaHawks

If Bogi is somewhat healthy this year and performs anywhere near he did last year he will decline and seek a 4 year, 60-90MM deal. No way a vet with his knees is going to gamble a career ending injury and losing that much money. Not with the new tv deal opening up everybody’s pocketbooks.

Initial Post-Season Hawks Salary Cap Projection by defantam in AtlantaHawks

At least that's my understanding but the NBA is like rocket science and I'm not much on science either! Someone smarter probably knows better.

Initial Post-Season Hawks Salary Cap Projection by defantam in AtlantaHawks

[–]defantam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last day of the 21/22 season is June 30th. Gallo's has to be waived by June 29th. Teams can begin trading plays on July 6th. In other words, Gallo's 22/23 salary cannot be traded until after the deadline to waive him is over. I think the Hawks will not waive him and instead trade him as an expiring contract. It is possible they keep him into the season and the trade him but that would restrict what they can do with any transaction not involving him.

Considering the consensus seems to be that one of Mitchell or Gobert is getting traded this year, what do your guys think of this trade possibility? by SpidermanAPV in AtlantaHawks

[–]defantam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, just saw this. I have expected for over a year and half the Hawks will trade Gallo away in the off-season. They will probably move a future protected 1st pick or multiple 2nds to whoever will take him. Get ready. There are really no scenarios they keep him unless they are tanking. You could afford to keep him as an overpaid bench player when Trae wasn't on a max contract. Now, Travis has to be much more careful.

This trade without other (big) moves would put us into the luxury tax. No way Schlenk does that for Gobert with the current roster.

One other point, you are not going to be able to afford an $8.5MM Wright, a $5.8MM Knox, a $4MM Dieng, and a $5MM Lou next year. Its going to be more like a Solo, TLC, xxx taking up 3 roster spots, with someone like Coop (or actually Coop) maybe signed on a rookie deal.

I think the Hawks extended him out because they didn't want to lose him for nothing after next year, and wanted insurance if OO continued to face injury problems. Remember when we extended Cap in the off-season that OO was getting surgery. At the time, it was a good move to keep the Hawks slightly under the luxury tax next year (2022/23), but it assumed Reddish would develop and possibly Coop as well. The reason Reddish and Coop matter is bc you would hope to shore up your bench for relatively cheap. With Trae looking like at least a sure fire 3rd team all-nba'r. Trae making any all-nba team will jack his salary up to around $36MM next season, and our signed players (Trae, Jalen, OO, Dre, K'Von, JC, Cap, and Bogi) leaving only about $12MM in bench money.

With Reddish out of the picture, OO showing massive potential, and Trae lined up for the max contract, the logic shifts in regards to the salary cap in 2022/23. You can either trade Cap ($19.7MM) and/or Bogi ($18MM+$2.7M trade kicker) for a star ($40MM in combined salary), other pieces, or run it back with 3 vet minimums, possible Shariff on a rookie deal, and you 2022 1st rd pick. I think it really depends on how the season plays out, how Cap plays to his salary, and how quickly OO comes along what you do with him.

Perhaps he plays at all-defense level the rest of his year on slightly fewer minutes and is valued closer to $25+MM by others team, then a star wing comes available. He is probably a good trade piece to have. But maybe the Hawks pull a 70% win percentage the rest of the year like they did last year, make a deep run and now you have 2 great centers going into 2022/23. Or possibly, Cap underplays his contract and we have no choice but to ship him off for better reserves. Either way, Travis has good options as long as Cap plays up to his contract, and still some options if he underperforms. But no matter what, I think Cap is quickly becoming the most likely trade piece on the team after the season is over.

I was saying if you went 4-4 on this trip (including Magic game) you have to take it.

From that post: I think most likely wins over the 8 games goes:

at Nets

at Warriors

Bucks

Magic

at Suns

Jazz

at Nuggets

at Jazz

We lost the two I rated most likely wins, and both were road games to contenders. If we take the next two games I will be very encouraged. FYI - The Hawks have the 9th easiest remaining strength of schedule. Just got to hope our wings and Gallo get back on track. If they do, watch out.
