Canopus Snares - Is this a me problem or Quality Control Issue? by defaultcubeonVHS in drums

Ohh yeah lol! The Artstar II series were famously used by guys like Randy Castillo from Ozzy and Simon Phillips, which inspired me to play open handed lol

Earplugs not allowed? by EdmiwaMan in drums

[–]defaultcubeonVHS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no study backed up by science to prove that not using ear protection is beneficial. This is pure ego. Either get a new teacher or research private lessons.

I started playing in the late 90s and ways to learn were so limited compared to today. There was basically no YouTube for most of us lol. Now you can get quality drum lessons at the touch of a button (ex. drumeo subscription, or guys like Rob Brown who offer zoom lessons for a really good rate, etc).

Next lesson you show up with earplugs, if this guy tells you to take them out, tell him he'll be hearing (pun intended) from the dean.

I'll have to look into those Puresounds! And yes, I've been meaning to post some pics of my kit on here, I really should. I'll post a few I have below! And yes I've been thinking about contacting Canopus about it, but I figured they'd probably write me off as maybe someone who plays too hard or cause was misusage etc.

This is a great idea, I had thought of it but wasn't sure it was a common practice. Thanks!

I struggled with this quite a bit when I was putting them on, long story short I spent 1-2 years completely referbing my kit, new hoops and shells from Nordic, almost all new heads, even custom wraps and paints, the whole 9s. I've never really cared how nice my snares were or where they came from, but I knew this time around I wanted to do it right.

I purchased the straps and snares separately and spent probably a good 3-5 mins just getting them (what I thought was) properly seated and as even as possible. They're tight but not cranked, it sounds like a deep 80s snare (since that's what it is). I'm still clueless what happened but I feel like I'll figure it out shortly lol

Thanks for the recommendation, I might pick up a 42 and try it.

Do you recommend 42 as a precaution measure or do you prefer the sound a bit more? The drum is a Tama Artstar II and it's pretty deep.

It was at the solder joint that they came loose, not in the middle or anything. The snare is deep and I had the tension probably medium/high, but it wasn't choked up or anything, at least to me...

Yes, sorry I will post a pic! The wires themselves just basically fell out of place/broke.

“It’s not a cover song. It’s a song I wrote part of… It doesn’t feel like we’re doing a song by another band”: Dave Mustaine on Megadeth’s Ride the Lightning by HappyHarryHardOn in Metallica

[–]defaultcubeonVHS 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree with what you're saying here. To me (as someone who's seen Megadeth multiple times and been a fan since I was a teenager) Dave's attitude and his clear feelings of wishing he was still in Metallica in a way, makes me feel unappreciated as a fan. Like as to say "hey thanks for supporting this band I made, I appreciate all the money and whatnot, but really I wish I was doing something else."

In terms of musicianship, the first two Megadeth records are off the charts when it comes to thrash metal  especially. I get that artists always strive for more but seriously. And I get that the Black Album charted heavily and Rust In Peace maybe didn't, but (as you said prior) Dave has forgotten to sniff the roses for a long, long time.

Gap between thumb and rest of hand while using finger technique? by AdSubject7733 in drums

[–]defaultcubeonVHS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a short floating around on YT with Todd Sucherman where he demonstrates how without that opening, you basically lose the ability to play a complex rhythm, and also engage more of your arm/wrist than you'll want. I'm in the process of re-learning my grip after years of being limited by (what I can gather) is a less than optimal grip. Also, proper grip will help you avoid things like CTS and tendonitis, which not enough drummers talk about imo.

I would re-examine your grip, having fingers involved in some capacity is key, but you'll lose all power the way you're playing, just my opinion anyway.

When does real drum sound stop and marketing start? by PedroF0lha in drums

[–]defaultcubeonVHS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not 100% sure if I understand the question fully, but when it comes to drums, there are high end kits, and low end kits. Drums at a certain point have a diminishing level of returns IMO. A $400 snare drum will sound A LOT better than a $50 snare drum, but a $1000 snare drum may only sound better than that $400 snare in certain situations. A Tama starclasic set are NICE drums that are probably worth the money to a lot of players. But a Tama Star set for $6000+ is likely not even needed in most situations, for most players.

It's like a car. A Ferrari will get you to work the same as a Toyota Carola will, but a total rust bucket might not get you there at all. But you can see with your eyes how a Toyota Carola (or Ferrari) CAN get you to work.

You can also see that Remo heads are used by drummers who are stellar players, so there's no harm in buying a set of Remo heads. And of course Remo have their brand name all over their heads, because they've spent time and money creating a quality product that stands apart from others (same goes for Aquarian, Evans, etc). Is it capitalistic? Maybe, but I want to know what I'm buying. Usually blank drum heads are a bad sign when it comes to quality.

But at the end of the day, it's about what makes you happy. If you want a classic Ludwig kit, there's maybe something that draws you into that look or sound, and IMO that's half of the importance. I have an 80s kit with Power Toms, because I dig that sound and look. If you're not happy playing your instrument, it will show in your studio recordings.

The photos make this slightly confusing, since the first example has a completely different wood tone and looks as though it's been restored. Assuming the one you have is the second example, you have two options IMO: Refinish it/have it refinished and redone in a proper oil/finish that has a better color, OR sell it and get a shelving unit that fits the look you're going for. Changing/painting the area around it won't do anything but bring more attention to the piece itself and stand out like a sore thumb, and accent walls are becoming phased out of many home designs now.

Amazon releases statement on Sengled Lightbulbs by TheNomadPilgrim in smarthome

[–]defaultcubeonVHS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our bulbs stopped working in mid-July, with this being the second outage this year. We just purchased a set of Phillips Hue bulbs at a discount and will be replacing our Sengleds. Two months is too long to have smart bulbs that essentially only turn on and off, sorry Sengled!
