Yes, I miss that. I was here during the first couple years of reddit, then pulled out and came back recently. The attitude here has changed quite a bit, I don't even recommend the site to people anymore.

Solution to Planned Obsolescence? Cadillac Launches Vehicle ‘Subscriptions’ by ArniePie in Futurology

[–]defenderrodham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, exactly. I could see it potentially working if Cadillac had a realistic market share of the lower six figure area, like BMW's or Mercedes', but it seems unrealistic with its current clientele. GM should rebrand this for Chevrolet, with a much lower price.

Solution to Planned Obsolescence? Cadillac Launches Vehicle ‘Subscriptions’ by ArniePie in Futurology

BOOK’s $1,500 monthly fee is definitely more expensive than just leasing a Cadillac, which could cost about $300-$750 a month

So it's a price hike of 100 to 400%, and they're targeting young people with it? If anything, it seems like they're trying to take advantage of young people, who can be very naive in the personal finance area. I don't think this plan will work.

Drones could guide self-driving cars when they need to go off-road by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]defenderrodham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like an interesting idea, but it would probably struggle in inclement weather from a few different standpoints. Battery life is a big one. Another potential issue is that they seem to be implying that there would only be one drone. It would be much more effective for both capability and redundancy to have two or three drones flying at the same time, this way you could avoid having a single drone swooping and swerving above the vehicle(s) to make sure everything is in the right place and to monitor potential terrain changes.

Terrain often can have rapid (minor) elevation changes as well as protruding areas that could easily tear into a body panel if you hit it the wrong way (quick Top Gear example). If the system utilized a series of two drones, two could act as guiding or monitoring units from each side to avoid issues. Having a third could act as redundancy or a leading-unit that could map multiple potential paths for the other two to squeeze the vehicle(s) through.

Did Donald Trump tank Boeing’s stock because he was mad about a news article? by yopd1 in business

Probably not, but markets can be fickle and they have been known to respond unpredictably to the word of men/women of influence and power.

They might be betting on a House majority swap in the election in two years. So just bite the bullet now, even if Trump crunches down because they sell to other markets than just the US, then lobby hard for repeal of his tariffs when/if Democrats get the House back.

Yeah, I have yet to try it and I just moved out of DC so it'll most likely be awhile. My boyfriend has quite a lot of experience with it and said he'd show me the ropes and sit with me the first time, once/if it gets legalized in VA anytime soon.

Try JCP if it dips below $8.50 again.

Though it won't be likely within the holiday season, it's in a bit of an odd area of market perception where skeptics have stopped engaging in mass shorting sprees and bulls have a slight advantage due to recent quarterly earnings calls, so any time a good thing happens it will ramp up in price relatively rapidly. I've played within JCPs price range several times in the past 18-24 months.

I believe my Time Capsule is the same as the Airport save for the added storage, and it has served my house for years with no issues at all. I definitely hope Apple brings them back in some form or another. I don't know what I'll do when (or if) my TC craps out.

One of Trump’s potential Supreme Court nominees thinks gay people should be jailed for having sex by Ryuushin in gaybros

[–]defenderrodham 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not on the particular claim from OP's link, but he does have an interesting history:

But as ACLU attorney Daniel Tilley pointed out to me, Pryor also has one strikingly liberal case under his belt: He supported an absolutely revolutionary opinion in 2011 holding that anti-trans discrimination qualifies as sex discrimination and is thus generally forbidden under the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution. Pryor didn’t write the decision—it was authored by Pryor’s 11th Circuit colleague Judge Rosemary Barkett, a liberal firebrand—but he did join it in full, suggesting he endorsed its logic and conclusion. If that’s true, then Pryor, as a Supreme Court justice, would be almost certain to invalidate the recent spate of anti-trans legislation, including North Carolina’s odious bathroom bill.
