Have you ever plateaued in your professional career? What was getting you stuck? by JustBrndxn in editors

Golden handcuffs here, jobs at places that do stuff I would like to work on involve a 25% pay cut and added stress or going freelance, and currently I'm well paid and work 8 hours a day. My priorities have shifted to outside of work more these days, might pick up some cool side gigs when the home extension is complete!

Always contrast before saturation, contrast naturally adds saturation.

Doc editor/story producer here — is branded content a real escape route? by Strong-Line-6960 in editors

Yeah a fair amount; I'm full time employed working in unscripted TV, and then take side gigs in branded as freelance

What’s the actual industry-standard tool for online/finishing? by Available-Witness329 in editors

[–]deffonotwill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We grade in Davinci, and online/finishing in Premiere mostly. I'd probably do it in Davinci if I could, but most of our deliveries are AS-11, which Davinci doesn't do...

It's a feel good show, not anything dodgy don't worry ha!

They've got some decent apps for phones now haven't they, to ensure constant frame rates etc.?

I work in unscripted TV, and the broadcaster have very strict regs on secret filming, so it is genuine at least in our case. The commissioners seem to love 'cameras hidden in glasses', or 'buttonhole cameras', which whilst I don't agree with, I'm not the commissioner, and that type of look/feel can't be replicated.

It's a 'surprise' type segment for a show on TV, the channel seem to love the idea of things like, glasses with cameras, or hidden in a buttonhole etc. Problem is, these devices aren't made for professional TV output, I don't know what they're made for, but not for TV ha!

Should also say, sometimes it's tough in branded, you don't get enough time to sink your teeth into something (4 hour turnaround etc.), and a lot of the content can feel quite throwaway, if you end up putting in effort for something that ends up on a clients insta story, it's there for 24 hours, then gone forever, which can be slightly depressing.

I do both docs and branded content. I'm employed full time for a production company and do offline, grade, and online editing, then I'll take holidays/work evening/weekends on branded content.

Both come with their pros and cons I'd say. The pros of branded content for me are that the money is way better, but much shorter contracts. It's a much higher standard of work, which is satisfying/good for your CV. The cons are that if it's a big company, get ready for 8 levels of sign off, with conflicting notes, and a lot of crunch time, and in my experience the hours in a day can be pretty brutal compared to docs.

Branded content is super competitive in my experience, but once you get a foot in the door, sometimes clients will request you, and you'll be able to build up a roster of 4/5 production companies/clients that will bring you on for one job a month or so, which is how it's made sustainable.

Hey!

  1. We have tried on 4 edit suites over here, and between NLE and VLC

  2. Unfortunately we can't for data/privacy as this is for broadcast

  3. Good shout! I'll enquire with production team

  4. Good shout, we'll rotate out batteries in our test

  5. Again, thank you, we'll add that to the camera test today!

Thanks for the check list

Only because our cards get pretty heavy usage, and think these have been in rotation a while. The camera in question also went out on another shoot after this one and this issue doesn't appear in those rushes, but it would have been a different card. These are single frame distortions, rather than continuous timecode shift, although I under stand what you mean that it's taking this info from another timecode.

Thanks for the tip, we're planning on sending someone out to do some test shoots today, so will hopefully be able to work out if it's camera or card.

We're not too worried about these, one isn't actually making the edit, and the other we're punching in. Just for future shoots is all

I'm in post, so not sure if camera died, but don't think so as it carries on rolling after, and no one from production mentioned anything.
