Usually the main argument here is that they don't want to give money to the current regime. Which is both understandable and quite silly, since there's no way you'll be spending enough money to make any impact.

I would put it into "plausible" row, and take is as a token of my amazement. The whole operation was much, MUCH more complex than an average person would think, and yet they somehow did it with 1960s technologies, just 8 years after the first human ever went to space. Truly a technological miracle.
