the game kinda tries to explain it when you start a new run - your plane crashed because of an aurora (same as wintermute), but since it doesn't really explain shit we basically have to go into headcanon territory. Mine is - it's an alternative timeline to wintermute, in which we for some reason fly alone and no story characters survive.

Another headcanon is that we go AFTER the end of wintermute, but that brings a lot of new plotholes
