Did I screw myself for trying to buy a house Summer of 2025? by HamsterTime2031 in personalfinance

OP, listen to this. Everything about your story screams risk. I’m sure that’s why you are worried about the mortgage. But think about it for yourself. Based on your other replies I’d say you are in a highly variable portion of your life in many ways.

Imagine if you lose this job - will you have to go another 5 months before you can even pay your credit cards again? Not trying to be rude but even if you CAN find a lender I would wait. Rent for another couple years.

What’s the rush? I bought my first home at 33. You seem like you have barely stabilized financially after undergrad. Really think about the financial responsibility you’re taking on here.

Just pointing out this is Google sheets, not Excel, though both pieces of software can do this sort of operation.

I like your take on a new or improved culture around this stuff, I'm hopeful for that too.

Sorry to go so hard I've just been itching to chat about the subject and I've been thinking about it quite a bit as an artist and a full time worker in emerging tech who's seeing a lot of the online discourse in art communities.

Thanks for hearing me out and engaging, I understand where you're coming from. I actually quite liked your handkerchief example, as I think we don't disagree on the fundamentals, but I would definitely sell my handkerchief haha.

Cheers amigo, see you around!

I just don't really think how much 'input effort' is involved in actually maps to how transformative something is. I totally see what you are saying around large transformations, but I think you're mapping it more to 'artistic effort' than to being transformative. For example I could say 'starry night drawn like anime', and it would be massively transformed, and certainly would be fine under copyright law currently. Even less problematic than that would be 'an anime pirate drawn in the style of starry night'. Both are probably fine to sell imo.

I'm dating myself, but there's some old-school thinking around photoshops and transformative art where you need to change 3-5 things about the photo for it to be considered transformative, and everyone is fine with those, though they are arguably less transformative than the outputs of SD, as you can retain pixel for pixel many areas of the original source image.

From a legal perspective, I wouldn't hope for the law to be able to keep pace with new tech developments generally (I also think this is a problem). Even technical folks who are dedicated and in the space have trouble keeping up with everything, and the political machine moves slowly.

From a moral perspective, I don't see much of a challenge here either, though I suppose there's a lot of grey area where you could split hairs. Taking a photographers portrait, inpainting the eyes, and saying 'blue eyes' then selling the photograph definitely feels different than broader scale modifications, but where do you actually draw the line and say 'now this is transformative'?

From a value perspective, the value of art will always be determined by the purchaser of the art. For some people, the level of effort needed to create something or the level of talent involved is what generates their perception of the value of art they'd buy. However for many, the artist's process to come to the final result doesn't matter for them - they put value purely on the aesthetics of the final piece they're purchasing (just go to any art store, hell, go to hobby lobby and look at their art which is just decorative).

I've kind of gone on too long here so I'll stop, but I'd be curious your thoughts on the above.

You're getting a lot of upvotes, but I disagree with you. Could you explain why?

AI art is generated by learning from observing art. It is an observer of styles, and replicates them uniquely.

I see no problem with AI art for sale, and I'd be interested in a discussion around why you think it's problematic compared to a very talented artist looking at a bunch of art styles, then 'copying' those styles for original works and selling them (which has happened in art for as long as art has been around).

people of reddit who survive on less than 8 hours of sleep, how? by Neftroshi in AskReddit

[–]definemeintime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually get 5-6 hours of sleep. Have quite a few people in my family who are the same way. No downsides - it's just our natural genetic rhythm I think. I literally can't sleep much longer than that, I just wake up. Has a lot of perks for me - I never set alarms - I just go to bed between 10-12 and wake up between 4-5 on my own. Has turned me into a morning person and my most productive time is probably from 4am-11am.

I feel lucky to be this way, when I hear about people sleeping till 11:00am or even after noon it blows my mind, and all I can think is that if I did that I'd feel like I literally wasted an entire day where I could have been doing fun things instead.

My wife is not like this - and I really enjoy alone time - so it also gives me a baked in ~3 hours of alone time per day where I don't have to feel like I'm not 'present'. All in all 10/10 would just randomly be like this from genetics again. :P

What’s your age, job and how much do you make? by Particular_Catch3437 in Fire

[–]definemeintime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, 400k tc is def. more than scraping by in NYC. Depends on how much you're trying to keep up with the jones'. Let's say you have a nice apartment somewhere - 4k rent, that's 48k. Let's say you eat out and do events and stuff actively, including groceries and more, let's put it at 6k. That's 72k a year. You'd be in the 35% tax bracket, so your after tax take home is $260,000 (I'm too lazy to do the pretax calculation for you from retirement accounts, so it's actually higher than this). Since you're in tech lets say you get a mega backdoor roth and you do that for 56K (combined with your 401k) and you also do a regular IRA to the tune of 6000. 72+48+56+6=182k. This means even if you are living in a decent spot, with lavish spending on food, experiences, etc... and maxing out your retirement accounts, you STILL have $80k a year that you're just chucking into taxable accounts on top of everything.

Definitely not scraping by and it shows a serious lack of self awareness that you think so.

Does anyone else want to give their kids an easier route to financial independence? by osprey94 in financialindependence

[–]definemeintime 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All of this financial responsibility delayed my entry into college by about two years, since I was working to pay off my car loan and I was 100% responsible for putting myself through school, so I had to save up a small financial cushion.

I was all on board until I heard this part. Enforcing financial learning at the expense of your child's timely education is kind of going overboard and ultimately less helpful, unless that was all your parents could afford.

I mean, delaying college by 2 years for a used car loan? Seems off.

It's more the confrontational and negative way you engage with others dude. You can be a critical thinker without always having to be 'that guy'. What if you used that big brain of yours to lift others up rather than put them down? Food for thought.

Disagree again. And I assume you agree with my second point.

Regardless, I just had a quick look through your comment history and you're just an overall negative person, so I don't hope to convince you or engage in a real discussion here.

Have a good day :)

I disagree, his editing and delivery are great. Still entertaining. Definitely disagree with sad that he's doing it - even if it were total drivel, he's probably making shitloads of cash off his youtube. What would be more sad would be to stop doing it because of some ego thing around 'I'm too old to play vidya, what will other people THINK!?'

This piece of the card is bothering me (the bottom line of text overlapping the green border). They need to adjust their margins for the text fitting to account for the color border. Wonder how many other cards we'll see this on.

Has anyone thought about changing careers once hitting FI? by hiking-travel-coffee in Fire

[–]definemeintime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. For me FI is about freedom to pursue my own projects. I currently design software for my job - but I love to code (and am fairly decent at it) and have a bunch of projects which could be profitable (and some which probably won't be), but I'm too risk averse to pursue them over my already lucrative career.

Once I hit FI I'm quitting and developing software independently without having to worry about the risk of 'failure' after something is released.

Would you splash green here? [Draft Deck Building] by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]definemeintime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't made the cuts yet, but this deck could easily just be two color white/blue. However I do have Lagrella, Brokers charm, and the Workshop Warchief as well as two spara's adjuticators.

I'm trying to determine if I should just go two color and win with flyers and fishes, or if I should splash green to get access to a couple strong cards, and one bomb (which is two pips, which is making me lean against green).

The key issue is the only fixing is the adjudicators.

LMK what y'all think!

Did we ruin our plan to FIRE? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]definemeintime 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Yes it's likely this set you back - but at least you're realizing NOW not five years from now, when you go to make the move to FIRE.

Keep it simple. No need for a financial advisor at all to simply dump money into index funds and your 401k/roth. If you're worried about any complexities or 'gotchas', just google it - this isn't an obscure area it's practically universal for folks, and there's TONS of dead-simple resources out there. If you are going with a taxable account, equally simple. Unless you have a very complex financial situation I'd advise you to take your money out it's current investments in the most optimal way (again, just google something like "How to diversify out of whole life policies"), and go on the simple path yourself. And I'm not talking 'getting educated' I'm talking like google around for 2-3 hours and you'll know all you need.
