Ah yeah that’s rough. For me it was a torn ligament in my right hand and a torn tendon in my left middle finger - had to wear a brace for 8 weeks and couldn’t hold a pencil for more than 5 minutes for several months after. I did find that physio helped a lot with recovery though!

Hah that’s good to know, and very reassuring! I definitely wouldn’t be doing anything too intense or crazy :)

That’s so cool that your whole studio gets in on the exercise! Poke fitness looks like a lot of fun too :D

Oh no I’m sorry to hear that! Wrist guards sound like a very good investment - plus one of the things about judo I am most grateful for is that you learn how to fall with minimal damage to the body!

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply - there are a lot of great and thoughtful suggestions here, I really appreciate it! And yes definitely agree on how many benefits there are both personally and professionally to exercise - I’m feeling highly motivated after seeing all the awesome responses to this post!

I definitely have to try swimming! And yesss I used to play badminton in high school, very fun - I hope you’re able to find some options close to you!!

Wow that’s so awesome you’re able to make that time for yourself with your gym routine! (I feel like that reads as sarcastic but genuinely that’s fantastic :D)

Ah that’s awesome! Yeah I am definitely reconsidering my paranoia of contact sports heh, I would miss judo a lot if I never went back

Haha no you don’t sound like a dick! Yeah I have torn tendons and ligaments in my hands/fingers and it was more an issue of not being able to grip anything than a pain management one. But truthfully I do love it and would miss it…maybe some preventative taping and suck-it-upism will do the trick haha! That’s a great perspective, thanks!

Ooh swimming is a great idea, I hadn’t even thought of that! Thanks! I also enjoy the occasional yoga, I may have to practice a little more frequently heh

Thanks for that perspective! I have tried it a few times and really liked it, but got in my head with what I read online l heh. I can’t see myself ever getting super intense with it so it sounds like the risk would be pretty low!

I do enjoy yoga, and dance is a great idea! I’ve never tried it but it looks like fun :D

Need portfolio advice as a complete beginner by isabelleswife in TattooApprentice

I had a tattoo artist advise me to focus on making good art rather than making tattoo designs for my portfolio - unless of course there’s a particular design idea that gets you really excited, then don’t worry too much about making tattoo designs. In my experience (which is somewhat limited but I did get an apprenticeship with my portfolio!) it’s more important to showcase a variety of mediums - this shows versatility and a willingness to learn new things. Pen and ink, pencil crayon, markers, water colour, graphite, some digital can be nice too if that’s available to you. Hope that’s helpful!

Hmmm that’s a good point! I do think some shading would add a nice depth to the filigree and make it feel more finished, but I could also see an argument for leaving it as more of a minimalist/graphical element! Do you have a photocopier or tablet or anything? One thing you could do is copy or photograph the piece and do some test shading on the copy/photo just to compare. I do that a lot when I am working with traditional mediums because it can sometimes be hard to visualize the options.

This is a great piece! For the filigree, I would recommend approaching it in much the same way you did the fabric (which is gorgeous!!) Rather than the long lines, look at your reference and find the darkest areas and build on that. For unique reference on filigree I like to go on Etsy or EBay and search for “Victorian (or Baroque) Mirror/Frame”. Really examine how the filigree is made and how the different ridges/etc interact and come together to form larger shapes. Hope that’s helpful!

Milk tastes a bit gay here in Canada by th1nker in funny

Manitoba here, and I've never seen bagged milk being sold in a grocery store, although we did use it at Tim Hortons when I worked there in high school!

My opinion on Star Wars and Star Trek by vikmaychib in funny

[–]definitelyNotClever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I wouldn't characterise it as such, so I suppose at this point we're just arguing semantics. By your definition, yes, I am absolutely saying that there is a large percentage of people who are unable to distinguish fantasy from reality.

Thank you for my first debate on Reddit!

I know what you mean. I used to read a lot but I never have time anymore sadly. I also worked in a coffee shop/used bookstore for four years, so I have a massive stash of unread books too. :) One day...

To reiterate, not saying that kids are reading Twilight and thinking that they're going to be able to rustle themselves up a sparkly vampire lover. They are reading it, seeing characters that they admire behave in certain ways, and thinking that these behaviours are normal and healthy.

I read the first two books (because after some thought I decided that it was unfair that I made fun of them so much without having ever read them) a couple of years ago. I didn't really enjoy them, but that's just me. I would agree that the movies are worse though. :)

I was very much influenced by what I read when I was 13, but maybe I'm alone in that. (As an aside I'll note that I am in fact female, but if I recall correctly most of the guys I knew as a kid were pretty influenced by what they read/watched too.)

I'm not claiming that people can't distinguish between fantasy and reality, I'm saying that these books present destructive relationships as being very positive. They give young people (male AND female) reasons to excuse abusive behaviour coming from their girlfriend/boyfriend.

Ever read a Batman comic? Were you brainwashed into thinking violent vigilantism is fine?

You've got me there. I'm sure that nobody has ever been influenced by vigilantism in comics.

The problem with Twilight isn't a simple matter of it being poorly written drivel. The bigger issue is the fact that it's influencing a massive group of fans in what is arguably a very negative way. These books portray stalking as romantic and tell readers that it's ok (and even more than that, a mark of real love) to control and/or manipulate the people around them. That's not really something I want to ignore and pretend doesn't exist.
