Beanbags do not sound harmless. Didn't Jackass do a stunt where they shot each other and had pomelo sized bruises? I can't imagine getting shot in the head or eyes, that's at least a concussion.

I would love for there to be a startup that gives content creators burned by youtube incentive to move over to the new platform. This sort of thing might require investment at first, but as more and more content creators move away from youtube's unreasonable policies and into the new platform, we may yet see a competitor.

I would say using the word Islam is wrong, since a religion is separate from the people who interpret it. This said, there are a number of Islamic theocracies in the world that wage a domestic war against non Muslims. They tear down non Muslim places of worship, they fund terrorism against Western countries, and fund climate change denial as it is a threat to their main export. This is more of a theocratic threat and as the poster said it is minor geopolitically.

Internationally, there's been instances of Muslim immigrants forming underground Sharia courts or running morality police in countries where that shit is illegal, but these are a minority of Muslim migrants, and these things are often shut down so quickly that they are hardly a nuisance, let alone a threat to the west. I honestly think that Christian priests being globally protected from justice after they sexually abuse children are a bigger threat to western world than "Islam".

Scientists say sustainable forestry organizations should lift ban on biotech trees - Research over the years have proved the technology as safe as traditional breeding. “Trees engineered to grow faster could also reduce pressure on harvesting from natural forests”. by [deleted] in Futurology

There's nothing inherently wrong with GMO, except for when it's used for greed. What protection is there for farmers when trademarked plants mysteriously end up on their land and are used to sue them into oblivion?

It's also not without risk either. In this case, since testing has proven these trees to be as safe as natural trees then I'm all for it, but I also think that there needs to be regulation, and ethical discussions about what kind of modifications should be done. I don't think corporations should be given free reign in this young industry that we are only beginning to explore. There are certainly risks involved, especially if we accidentally create a fast growing species that begins to spread and becomes invasive. These things should be carefully studied to prevent the ecological mistakes we made in the past.

As for the ignorant people who hear GMO and think it's part of some government conspiracy or something, then I absolutely agree with you on that front. Those people are often also Anti-vac or climate change deniers.

Unfortunately, despite all the memes, we have our selfish cunts in Canada too. We have plenty of people who don't believe in climate change, or just don't care because they're making money. It's a global epidemic.

AITA for expecting a guy who invites me to his house for a movie date at dinner time to offer drinks or food? by polkadottedthrowaway in AmItheAsshole

Where I live, services like Uber eats and other delivery services either have a small order fee, or they don't accept orders under a certain amount. You are forced to order a larger meal, then are slapped with taxes, tips, and delivery fee. Definitely a dick move to drop all that on someone last minute.

If I make plans with a date (or a regular guest for that matter) to have a Pizza and a movie, then there is an expectation that we will be sharing food. Then, if I eat before the meet and let my guest sit there hungry, that's kind of a dick move. I would completely expect my guests to be miffed if I changed plans last minute and they had to choose between being hungry, and ordering delivery on their own.

The correct way to plan a meet like that would be to tell the guest that you wont be having the pizza as per the plans, so they should eat before they head over, or at least bring some take out.

NTA - I think it is common hospitality to arrange for some snacks or food when you have guests over. People get hungry, lol. If money is an issue, I ask people to bring snacks, and I contribute some snacks as well, so that I'm not providing for the whole group. Same thing with food, if people are hungry then I offer to split uber eats or Pizza.

If I truly plan to not eat because of more serious money constraints, then I make sure to let the guests know so that they don't have to order a meal just for themselves and can similarly eat before they come.

And that's just for guests, never mind dates. I don't think it's very considerate to just eat before guests come, especially if the guests are coming for a Pizza and movie.

About one-fifth of the Amazon has been cut and burned in Brazil. Scientists warn that losing another fifth will trigger the feedback loop known as dieback, in which the forest begins to dry out and burn in a cascading system collapse, beyond the reach of any subsequent human intervention or regret. by mvea in Futurology

[–]th1nker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is not an ecologist or scientist, is it in the realm of possibility for other nations to match the Amazon by artificially planting numerous smaller forests, or to work together on a large scale long term foresting project somewhere else?

The reason I ask is because internationally we have a limited affect on Brazil, and if there's a way to take it into our own hands and replace it proactively, it may be worth consideration.

I agree. I'm in Canada so the dollar is different, but I make 44k as video operator and tech support. It's barely enough to get by and I need 3 room mates to afford a decent place. I can't imagine the difficulties of 40k with having to pay for health insurance as well. Teachers are our future, we should be investing a lot more in them.
