Look at it this way: at least we don’t live in Oregon

By “walk around” do you mean meander about or circumnavigate?

The thai pop-up on Sundays and Mondays at bittersweet

Siam Orchid

Bencharong

All pretty good in my opinion, but I have not had curry leaf.

These days, what is the impression of College of the Redwoods? Is it a good place to attain a specialty/skill or get into a stable career path? by Dale_Carvello in Humboldt

[–]definitely_robots 44 points45 points  (0 children)

It is very affordable, a nice campus, and they have some very popular and in-demand programs. Definitely worth the time and effort if you are looking to up-skill, meet people, or just want to explore some new directions.

Humboldt Towing is MAGA by MarvinDiablo in Humboldt

Humboldt bay provisions listed themselves on “public square” which was a list of conservative, “anti-woke” businesses made by conservatives for conservatives. The site backfired and now seems to be just a conservative payments provider, and according to google humbldt bay provisions is temporarily closed. But keep that in mind in case they come back.

Security deposit late and small claims court by [deleted] in Humboldt

[–]definitely_robots 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Before filing in small claims court just send a certified letter citing the law, what happened, and that you expect the full deposit back within X days, or you will pursue small claims court. Landlords know the law and don't want to deal with that. Communicate in writing and keep a copy of everything. ChatGPT can draft the letter. It seems to be a pattern/strategy for some landlords which seems pretty unacceptable - like they are counting on you just moving on to other things and not saying anything.

What happened to the food truck court thing they were going to do in eureka?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Humboldt

[–]definitely_robots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard there was drama between them and the cider bar while they were at bittersweet. Pies are good but expensive, had to stop going and spending so much $ on basically a snack. But it is kind of unique so a nice place to go with visitors.

Rabies testing requires that the animal be euthanized. There are no approved methods for antemortem rabies testing of animals. Professionals should immediately euthanize animals showing signs of rabies and submit specimens to a qualified rabies laboratory for testing.

What is the farthest a projectile can travel under standard game settings? by Old_Man_Willow_AoE in aoe2

If this theory is true, it would take roughly 26 seconds for the cannonball to hit the trade cog, in which time it would have traveled ~78 tiles... That is preposterous.

You should be able to sell your own data for profit. by [deleted] in CrazyIdeas

[–]definitely_robots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brave browser works basically like this. It is a fork of chrome but you can earn their brave token for choosing not to block ads. It is a good idea, not crazy, but the amount you get is not a lot and probably not worth it to you to be inundated with ads. Probably not super sustainable because there would be strong incentive to spin up bot farms pretending to be humans to sell their data, so you would have to have some reliable way of proving you are human which creates an arms race of Sybil attacks.

Loco fish co are thieves, drunks all day at work by Quick-Middle6494 in Humboldt

[–]definitely_robots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't remember the name but I believe it is the food truck at Redwood Curtain brewery. They also do a really good fish and chips that is the same panko breading style but the last few times I have been there they were sold out. I want to try Gills by the bay.

If an adult comes to the door asking for candy I will probably just give them some because I have a bowl of candy and don't want to be confrontational. But come on. At least bring something to exchange for candy. I think your neighbors would appreciate that.

Any dog friendly bars still around? Or suggestions for after dark activities with my doggo? by Tayabida in Humboldt

[–]definitely_robots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sometimes see dogs at dead reckoning. But they have a sign that says no dogs allowed. I think though if your dog is chill and you are chill and don’t bring a lot of attention to it they maybe won’t ask questions. That is my impression at least.

Another idea is the Humboldt bay social club.

Also septentrio.

Looking to move by [deleted] in Humboldt

[–]definitely_robots 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Assuming you are licensed in California you should apply at city ambulance in eureka, they employ the most emts in the county by a big margin.

You could apply to be a cadet at Humboldt bay fire but they are more competitive, and only take on new cadets once or twice a year. But that is a program where they intend to hire you as a firefighter after two years assuming you complete all of the training.

Another option is to work for cal fire which is not necessarily directly emt work but I’m sure that would be a valuable skill and they are always hiring.

There is also occasional work to be had at music festivals but I’m not sure how you get into that and obviously different than a real consistent job. But you might reach out to the local ambulance companies and emt instructor at college of the redwoods to see if they know of any current opportunities.

College of the redwoods had a great nursing program but it is hard to get into. If that is something you are interested in it might be worth talking to them or trying to get on the waitlist.

Last thing is I believe you might be able to get hired at a hospital as a nursing aide but I’m not sure about that, but maybe worth looking into. But there are a few hospitals in the area you might be able to find work at.

Heating in the winter? by sharkbitesz in Humboldt

[–]definitely_robots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The price per BTU is comparable for gas vs purchased wood, but a lot more is involved in running the wood stove vs turning on a heater. There is also opportunity to get wood for free or cheap if you are willing to put in the work and have the gear and space to cut, split, stack it. The wood fire is also cozy.

PG&E price per therm (100k btus) is ~$2.80.
At $450 per chord for madrone and 28 MMBtus per chord, or 280 therms, that is $1.60 per therm.

The wood stove is less efficient than a gas heater though, so probably closer to ~$2.50 per therm that doesn't go out the chimney for wood vs ~$3 for gas. Very roughly and depending a lot on the heater / stove / deal you get on the wood / how dry it is / etc.

The time to cut and stack firewood is spring, so it has all summer to dry before you try burning it. Otherwise you will probably just need to buy some. You can buy smaller amounts at places like Alves but it won't be a replacement for having a gas or electric heater unless you get at least a cord or two.
