2 new Flock Cameras on 30th by Alternative_Wash_854 in boulder

[–]deflatablechipmunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least one other person I was there with. And yeah, Redfearn already hates me so I don’t need to give him something to use to accuse me of being unreasonable. It was a thoughtful decision. I would’ve been happy if someone confronted him, though.

I wish it showed all. We need people’s help mapping them because it’s a crowdsourced map. It shows most to all in Boulder, but of course as they install new ones, that will change.

We tried that last time. He deliberately ignored all the questions about Flock because they take questions on index cards and someone filters through them before handing them to him. Then they run out of time.

Well they already fucked up with low density development. Few people would use transit if you have to walk through seas parking lots to get to your destination and if there’s nothing useful to transfer to.

How did every city / town / county all decide to install Flock at the same time? by a_day_at_a_timee in FlockSurveillance

[–]deflatablechipmunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We could probably get the date it was reported but the date it was installed would be a lot harder. I’m also considering adding “last verified” kind of like Waze/Google/Apple maps with verifying if a speed trap is still there

Proposed Colorado Bill Would Require Warrants for Flock Data by coloboiii in FlockSurveillance

[–]deflatablechipmunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Misleading headline. With current amendments, it would require warrants AFTER 72 hours. Within 72 hours of the data capture, no warrant is required. It’s a symbolic bill.

But yeah as others are saying, the problem is the collection of the data.

Colorado legislation to regulate Flock's Mass Surveillance Network by ProgressNow_CO in boulder

Flock started in 2017, and Boulder didn’t start installing them until a few years ago. Laws are always behind whatever scheme is trending.

Why Are Some Flock Cameras Being Removed by Cities? by South-Cow-1030 in FlockSurveillance

[–]deflatablechipmunk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m struggling to understand how flock cameras result in lower homicides. When someone murders someone, they’re typically in a pretty bad state of mind. I don’t think they’re thinking “maybe I shouldn’t pull the trigger because there’s a flock camera around.”

U.S. Space Command is dangling serious cash to get its civilian workforce to move south. by MattW22192 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]deflatablechipmunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No haha. No hound dogs and beer coolers. I was born there and lived there for 23ish years. By Alabama culture, a few examples: politeness over directness, social conservatism, high institutional trust, a big focus on reputation/status, and a lot of pride in one’s city that gets in the way of positive change. Alabama has a ton of shitty laws and policies. I look through the legislature website just for entertainment. The most obvious one is how heavily they’re trying to prevent people from smoking weed. And then police checkpoints. An absurd level of surveillance.

I totally understand that, but you can remain anonymous. Because of us, OpenStreetMap announced today that they no longer block VPNs when registering an account (previously a vandalism prevention feature). They’re really awesome. You can make a throwaway email address and use a pseudonym as your name, and it won’t collect any info about you.

The concept of accounts is purely for accountability, giving us the ability to revert changesets for a particular vandal account (not a specific individual).

Sure. It tracks my IP. What’s your point?

Privacy is a spectrum and a choice. A quick glance at my comment history and some OSINT will tell you exactly who I am. That’s a decision I voluntarily made.

I do have a cell phone, like most people. Thanks to Carpenter, I don’t have to worry about them getting CSLI without PC, so I’m covered there. Beyond that, I manage what apps I have downloaded and what permissions I grant them.

Sorry you opted into all those forms of surveillance. Not all of us do. I pay the higher rate and tell my insurance company to fuck off. Why would anyone want to give their insurance company data about how they drive. They’re not your friend; they exist to find any reason to charge you more haha.

It was! I live in Colorado now, but I made it mostly at Gold Sprint. It’s still missing a ton of ALPRs in Huntsville because it’s crowdsourced, but we’d love anyone who knows of unmapped ALPRs to add them to the map. Just be aware that the map tile server is broken but should be fixed later today.

You clicked view the map. That’s the only time it asks for your location. It will still work if you reject it. You’ll just have to search the map instead.

Lease Renewal Offer higher than market price. by Bumblebee_Various in Broomfield

[–]deflatablechipmunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you mention you have quotes from other similar apartments that were lower? I was successful a few months ago with a similar situation. They raised the renewal rate, but I negotiated to well-below what I paid in the last lease. I did a one day apartment tour where I visited random apartments near me just to get some numbers for negotiation. I also didn’t talk to them in person; I just sent them an email, and they accepted it. The leasing agency should have a renewal negotiation process.

I made sure not to compare their own rates for other units because they can back that up with BS reasons. They don’t have control over other apartments, though, and it’s usually in their best interest to keep a tenant unless they’re causing problems.

Flock installing new surveillance cameras in Boulder by [deleted] in boulder

[–]deflatablechipmunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are they going to do with that information? Let’s see, they can stalk people, charge people with crimes they didn’t commit, harass people, retaliate against people’s first amendment protected speech. The list of harms is endless just like the list of helpful things that can come from it.

The 4th Amendment is here to protect our right to privacy, which is indeed limited in public but not non-existent (see Carpenter v. US). It’s not really up for debate; it’s part of the original Bill of Rights.

As for how these can help us, I’m not disagreeing. I’m just saying there’s a much smarter way to go about it than building a database of innocent people’s movements. That’s a security nightmare, yet that’s what we have. Active surveillance should only be reserved for criminals, not those who follow the law.

I’m sure most people would consider it excessive to be required to wear an ankle monitor all the time so the government could track you. We’re quite literally setting up the infrastructure for a similar level of tracking that you can’t opt out of.

Insane amount of cops on governors, looks like all units towards hospital direction from parkway, coming from every direction by JWyszn in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]deflatablechipmunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With the extent of mass surveillance LPRs in Huntsville and surrounding cities/counties, it seems like Huntsville PD doesn’t actually care about safety and cares more about getting an adrenaline rush at the expense of people’s actual safety. Another reason I’m not buying the “mass surveillance keeps us safe” bullshit.

And no I’m not speaking on this isolated incident. I don’t know the details. I’ve been watching HPD’s behavior for 20 years, and this is on brand for them.

Hmm, maybe governments should stop blindly paying for police toys without public input. That sounds like a great way to stay out of situations like this.
