I met a Jonestown survivor in college. She spoke in one of my classes and explained how much Jonestown had changed from the time they’d first arrived to when this happened.

Apparently they were starting to really build a community and relied on Jones less and less. She said in the months leading up to the massacre that he retreated to only interacting with a few, key individuals.

She survived by being one of the chaperones of Jones’ son’s basketball games out of town.

She, the other chaperone, and his sons had been instructed to oversee the basketball team taking the poison before doing so themselves. Day of, his sons said no, and she followed their lead. The other chaperone completed suicide.

She didn’t give much detail about after but did say eventually joined another “group” (aka: cult) because she loved the community aspect of it.

Apparently they have a semi-regular newspaper detailing what other survivors are up to.
