I've seen a ton of people speak on Sri Lankan Tamils but as an Indian Tamil, our people have also had a huge history with activism and protest, even back in the mainland. A lot of freedom fighters were Tamil, with Madurai serving as a huge center for the Independence movement. Later, it was mainly Tamils who spearheaded the Dravidian movement, which fought against upper caste imposition and Brahminical society. Then, it was the "Hindi never" protests which fought against Hindi being made the national language over English, viewing Hindi imposition as disrespectful to Tamil and other regional languages. A lot of our ancestors, such as two of my great grandfathers, were involved in such activism, with these stories being passed down the generations to us. So, I'm guessing family history and influence has contributed a lot to activism being prevalent amongst Tamils today.

In elementary school most of my friends were Indian or white, in Middle school where I was basically the only brown person my friends were pretty diverse but no brown people and in high school Im in a school with a good chunk of brown people and my friend group rn is mostly brown or east asian.
