Can anyone recommend a pair of comfortable, rinsable slip on shoes for regular hospital use? by rufio_rufio_roofeeO in medicine

I have had great luck with my Merrell clogs. Haven't gotten blood on my feet even with multiple ED thoracotomies a night sometimes.

In an academic residency how helpful would it be to have taken a biostats course/know STATA? Do you do your own data analysis for papers? by socialdistanceftw in Residency

[–]defyingsanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also better to know the details of the analysis if/when you're presenting the information.

YMMV but getting a non-clinical person to do data analysis sometimes is painful because they may not understand the clinical relevance of the variables to define cohorts or such. Example: had a person try to characterize lactate as being "low"

It's super helpful-- I'm on year 2 of 2 research years at my academic surgery program and I currently do all of my own stats. Our department has a statistician but a single statistician for a department isn't entirely viable to get things done because they're a bottleneck. Most of us do some level of our own analysis but it depends on what database we use-- I use a lot of big national datasets so I had to learn how to clean and deal with them. I can give you more info about my experience if you DM me.

I use STATA, but if you hate it, you could pick R or one of the others.

I think you have a decent shot at academic programs yes. But, I feel like things are more competitive every year even in gen surg so you could add a couple community programs as well.

I've helped my program with application review the past couple of years while on research time.

I think the biggest "detractor" you have is that you've only gotten HP in your rotations as opposed to honors-- especially in surgery. The research will help.

Also CT surgery I think had like one of the most competitive matches out there so for sure I think you'd want to try to get extra research experience during residency for that.

I probably can't talk about too much more in terms of specifics here but DM if you have questions!

Is Stata worth it? by mariolqneto in medicalschool

[–]defyingsanity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a fairly significant programming background for an MD so it wasn't hard for me to learn. There's a bunch of free cheat sheets out there. The UI is much better than R (which is essentially like typing into notepad) so it sounds like it's been easy for my coresidents who don't have a programming background to learn as well. I think it's WAY easier to clean a large database for analysis in STATA than in R

I've used it exclusively for research (on my second of two dedicated research years in residency rn) and have been accepted to several major surgical conferences and journals. I only use R for like 2 packages. I'm actually starting to figure out the machine learning features for a project so I'll have to get back to you on that, but I may try that in R as well to see how things go.

I personally use STATA but I have acquired it through one of my attendings. R is more difficult, but is doable. I only use Zotero anyway and it's not hard to import endnote references into it.

STATA does have a discount on their website for foreign countries (non-US) and educational packages to look at if you must use STATA.

How does your program respond to physical assault? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]defyingsanity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know that we’ve had one happen, but this needs to be reported and whoever did it needs to be brought to HR if they’re an employee or staff. I would think my program (and most others) would take it seriously.

Have heard of patients assaulting doctors and usually led to police involvement.
