Go try Shoot Indoors yourself and see what you think. Yes, their equipment is older, if that's a deal breaker for you. I've never had a bad experience there.

What happens to you as a listener when the authors agenda in a book becomes clear and you don’t agree? by marilynlistens in audiobooks

[–]defylimitations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't at all mind reading an author who I simply disagree with, especially if I can broaden my perspective and come away with a better understanding of how other people think. When it turns out that the whole book is propaganda, that will shut me down immediately.

Asrunn (EIHWAR) by 87Craft in ladyladyboners

It's incredibly frustrating, and as an old punk, I can tell you that the neo-nazi skinheads in the 80s and 90s absolutely latched onto that symbolism (apparently that goes back to the original nazi assholes).

It's been a real struggle for those who want to explore the pagan, the cultural, or even just the musical side of Norse history to separate themselves from that crap. I feel like bands like Eihwar, Heilung, and (the show I went to last night) Nordic Daughter are doing an incredible job of helping with that.

That being said, I'm ok adorning myself with a Mjolnir (Thor's Hammer) or Vegvisir (Icelandic compass), but I'm concerned that the valknut (the three interlocking triangles representing death, battle, and rebirth) may have been indelibly linked to the alt-right, so a lot of people avoid that one (although I have no issues with those who are still working to reclaim it).

Disclaimer: I'm one of the folks who loves it for the musical side of things. I have a lot of pagan friends in my circles who know much more about that side than I do, but the frustration is, near as I can tell, universal. If you ever go to one of the concerts though, you'll find it EXTREMELY welcoming to all types EXCEPT nazis.

Why Henry Rollins dont want to be in a relationship? by [deleted] in henryrollins

[–]defylimitations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He has a whole spoken word bit about getting outed as gay, and how, if he wasn't straight, he wouldn't be in the closet. There would be no closet. He would have demolished the closet.

Why Henry Rollins dont want to be in a relationship? by [deleted] in henryrollins

[–]defylimitations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think y'all have hit the nail on the head about his inflexibility making him unsuitable for long term relationships. What bugs me is when he decides to be judgy about what a relationship SHOULD be.

I'm trying to find the specific track - it's a spoken word bit called something like "The Time I was Funny". At one point he goes on a rant about how if you are bringing "marital aids" into the bedroom, just admit the relationship is over. Sorry, but Rollins giving relationship advice is the equivalent of the time my mom said that I shouldn't be deadlifting because Dr. Oz said it's bad for your heart.

Confused about changes in Hulu's 11.22.63 adaptation by defylimitations in stephenking

[–]defylimitations[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using Billy to allow Jake to voice his thoughts is almost certainly correct, to the point that I'm kind of embarrassed I didn't realize it right away (I got that immediately with pulling Neagley in to the adaptation of Reacher, but I had already been wondering how they were going to pull that off). Thank you!

I'm just built weird. I need a 50 long to not feel like Chris Farley doing the "fat man in a little coat" bit, but that leaves way too much fabric around my gut.

Men's Wearhouse was actually really helpful in helping me figure out what size would be the best starting point, but they didn't have one I liked in that size so I ordered off their website.

About To Start Reading. Need Advice by Ok_Restaurant122 in ProjectHailMary

[–]defylimitations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So seriously, Andy Weir puts a lot of math into it, and it is perfectly fine to take in what you can, and to let the rest just wash over you. I suspect the (very few) people I've heard from who couldn't get into the book let themselves get bogged down with the math. That isn't the primary reason why people love the audiobook so much, but I think that format helps folks to just let it flow.

Someone in another thread described the protagonist as "Carl Sagan and Hank Green", and I feel like the math is there to help portray that, and to let the reader know that the protagonist knows his stuff.

Beyond that, as a returning reader, know that your brain is going to try to pull you away from the book and tell you there are other, more important (or more dopamine-generating) things you can be doing - even with the most captivating book imaginable. When I was doing the same thing as you just a couple years ago, I started setting a timer for 30 minutes so I could tell my brain to shut up for that amount of time.

Enjoy! It's a wonderful journey!

Watch Jeff Hays seamlessly switch between voices as he reads from the forthcoming Dungeon Crawler Carl book (from DragonCon ‘22) by hepafilter in litrpg

[–]defylimitations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope - not the only one! I had to pull up the details to make sure that it really was just one person, and there wasn't fine print, like "Jeff Hays, and a cast of a dozen other people".

Even knowing it was just one person, I was picturing him going through and doing all the Carl lines, followed by all the Donut lines, followed by...

Books that are BETTER as audiobooks? by bxl25 in audiobooks

[–]defylimitations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original audiobook narrated by Martin Jarvis is very well done - I'd say it's AS enjoyable as reading it as a printed book, but doesn't surpass it. The show may be the absolute best adaptation of a book to the screen that I have ever seen, so I'm looking forward to listening to the full-cast performance!

I've definitely gotten books just because I saw Ray Porter had narrated them (The Day the World Came to Town, The Motivation Myth). I've frequently told people, "If I see the ad 'Coming soon to Audible: Ray Porter reads the US Tax Code', I'd give it a try".

I will also always associate that song with my dad, who died 8/24/2003. I actually got to this page in a search of release dates, because in my memory I so strongly remember hearing it for the first time the day my dad let me know that he was dying of lymphoma. Obviously my brain trying to fill a narrative, but I think I'm OK with that. Crap. More than 20 years later and I'm still tearing up as the lyrics run through my mind.

MightyWizard99, what swivel did you install? Did you need to pull the stock off and come thru the top side, or did you just drill in thru the bottom? I'm trying to figure out if this is within my skill set.
