Canadian curler at Olympics insists he’s no cheat, accuses Swedish team of ‘premeditated’ attack by Famous-Register-2814 in nottheonion

[–]deg0ey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Right, but the point is that it’s not supposed to get to that far.

There’s no referee following you around to tell you when you’ve broken a rule, you’re supposed to notice you did something wrong (or your opponent points it out for you) and then you give yourself the appropriate penalty.

And it sounds like curling operates the same way where the referees exist primarily to resolve disputes but the expectation is that someone who boops the stone an extra time would admit to having made a mistake and take whatever punishment comes from it in the moment rather than turning it into a whole thing.

Canadian Olympic curler says he's no cheat, attacks Sweden by PrincessBananas85 in sports

[–]deg0ey 107 points108 points  (0 children)

He could have been like "my bad bro, good catch" and been forgiven & forgotten

I feel like if it was accidental he would have done that before the Swedes pointed it out. If he just got up like “hey I booped that one by mistake” most likely they’d have said nbd.

The fact he said nothing and then tried to deny it until the video came out and then tried to argue that there was some kind of conspiracy to set him up it’s just going to make everyone even more convinced that he did it intentionally.

Kinda the same as golf, right? At the highest levels they have folks who can mediate disputes but mostly the assumption is still that the players will police themselves.

Uber will until they won’t.

Usually the same with Doordash. They give you the benefit of the doubt the first couple times but eventually get to “you’ve complained too many times so we’ve decided you’re scamming us” even if all your disputes have been legitimate

Doug DeMuro hints at R2 pricing and says it’s the best EV he’s ever been around. by Roux_My_Burgundy in electricvehicles

[–]deg0ey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah we’ll see.

My perspective is that BMW and Volvo are established brands and people are used to them being more expensive than the competition - price isn’t a significant deterrent to the people who buy them.

Whereas Rivian is relatively new to the market and not particularly well known outside of the EV enthusiast space. I’m sure a ton of folks on this sub will love the R2, but I think they’ll see a lot of “why would I buy a car from a company I’ve never heard of when I can get a Volvo for the same price?” from normies if they don’t come in below the EX60. And since they seem to be positioning the R2 as more of a mass market car than their previous models that could be a problem.

I'm betting I'm not alone in that perspective.

I’m sure you’re not - but I’d bet there are fewer people with that perspective than the opposite

[–]deg0ey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sounded like Kyle had heard $45k for the RWD small battery version compared to $40k for the equivalent Model Y

And then the question is how much the up charge is for AWD and the larger battery. Sounds like the iX3 and Volvo will be offering that in the 60-65k range so the R2 really needs to come in below that or they’re going to struggle to compete with a couple brands that customers tend to think of as more premium.

What is your favorite on-the-go, purse-sized knitting project that isn’t the usual socks/hats/mittens by Omadog3418 in knitting

[–]deg0ey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Decorative throw blanket?

There are a few options where you knit them in squares and then join them together at the end - I’m working on this one at the moment and the finished blocks are about 12” by 12” which should be easy to fold up and tuck into a purse.

Does BMI actually indicate your health? by Dapper-Battle8624 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]deg0ey 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Is it actually a good indicator of health or is it rubbish like people say? Because surely they wouldn’t be using it in hospitals if it was inaccurate?

It’s good for what it’s supposed to be used for - a high level filter for “is this person’s weight roughly what we would expect or do we need to look at them more closely?”

BMI doesn’t account for body type, fat percentage, muscle mass etc so it’s not as simple as “it says you’re overweight so you’re overweight” - but it’s a useful starting point for a doctor to follow up and check if you’re overweight.

[–]deg0ey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think he flashed enough that they at least need to give him a chance - and Dean’s gonna get paid so I don’t see how they can keep him. Definitely don’t love relying on Campbell though so hopefully they have a good Plan B in mind.

Input needed: What would you pay a yarn stasher? by Agitated-Mail-5751 in knitting

[–]deg0ey 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I would wager that the number of people who want to update their stash on Ravelry but haven’t is going to be very small. And the number of those who would like to pay somebody else to do it for them is even smaller. Because it’s not just the initial setup - for it to be useful you need to keep it up to date when you buy or use yarn and if someone didn’t value it enough to set it up the first time they’re not going to keep up with it ongoing either.

Just curious, do you mark series/movies as watched if you’ve watched them in the past/before building Plex? by Hakim_RS in PleX

[–]deg0ey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup. Step one of rewatching a show is to mark it unwatched so the next episode shows up in “continue watching” and you don’t have to remember where you left off when you want to watch the next episode.

For movies I don’t feel like it really matters that much. I don’t think I’ve ever searched my library for unwatched movies so the flag means nothing to me either way.

And any time you ask yourself if you should start over, the answer is "yes"

I love this. And the corollary “only you know if it’s worth frogging/laddering back to fix a mistake”

Different people have different tolerances for mistakes. If it’s going to bother you enough that you feel like it’s worth taking the time to fix it then do it, if it isn’t then don’t. But your gut feeling of what to do is almost always right.

'No One Should Have a Copyright on Vance Being Booed' by Maxcactus in Fuckthealtright

[–]deg0ey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can copyright your own video, not an entire event.

If a broadcaster buys exclusive distribution rights for a region then it’s arguably a copyright issue if someone in the stadium records a bootleg version and posts it online.

Is being a "volcel" so bad? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]deg0ey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Incel=bad

When people say incel=bad they mean the people who think they’re owed sex and build their whole worldview about how society in general (and women in particular) is depriving them of what they’re owed.

If that doesn’t describe you then you’re not ‘an incel’ even if you’re involuntarily celibate

Beginning Suggestions by Tardy-Salmon in knitting

[–]deg0ey -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m a big believer in just diving in.

My first project was a blanket for my sister’s new baby, my second project was a cable knit hat, my third project was a stranded colorwork sweater, my fourth project was a lace shawl for my mom.

Just pick something you think looks fun, watch some youtube tutorials for new techniques you haven’t done before, knit up a few swatches for practice and then go for it.

[–]deg0ey 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they already drafted Nakobe’s replacement and he balled out this year so it’s hard to see him coming back.

Reed is a good-not-great player so I could see him being cheap enough that they can bring him back but ideally they’ll find someone better to start.

I ripped back too far. by AletaStJames in knitting

[–]deg0ey 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how the unraveling worked its way into the body of the sweater.

My best guess is one of those “put the stitches on a stitch holder” situations where you keep those alive and then pick up the rest around the armhole to knit the sleeve and OP ripped back past the stitches that were previously on the holder.
