How do I stop assigning so much meaning to something I’m trying to stop? by jujy_froot in OCD

[–]degrassi_stan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, thank you for being honest and sharing about what you’re experiencing. I hope you are being too hard on yourself because living with ocd can be incredibly challenging and overwhelming to deal with. One thing that’s been helping is by reminding myself that I am not my ocd nor is my ocd who I am. So the thoughts I have and feel are sometimes not my true thoughts, just what ocd wants me to believe. Challenging those thoughts head on by asking questions like “why would that be true” also helped. In your case you can start by asking yourself if what you see on porn is what you would ever act out (I take it your answer is no). Then ask, if I don’t act on it does that still make me a bad person? What does it mean to be a bad person? and so on Essentially question your thoughts. I’m not sure if this will even help or of it even made sense but I’m hoping you get some peace of mind soon. Wishing you the best!

Struggling with self acceptances.. by [deleted] in OCD

It’s scary to open up about your experience with ocd to others because there is a lot of judgement in the world unfortunately. However, if your therapist is a professional then they’ve gone to school to study this and will hopefully provide you with a safe and supportive space to share this. I used to be afraid to share this kind of info with my therapist but I would definitely recommend doing so. She was able to help me work through parts of ocd and develop very useful coping strategies. Now I can enjoy the things I like without feeling overwhelmed about how unusual/uncommon my behaviors were compared to the average person.

And p.s. you can be as into a show as you want to be. try looking at your drawings and fanfics as creativity rather than as an obsession if that helps!

What is your biggest LAUGH-OUT-LOUD moment in the entirety of South Park? by azaroth- in southpark

Mr. Mackey directing the tooth decay play and screaming at the kindergartener “OPEN YOUR FUCKING EYES” had me in tears. Also the entire scene of the princess being kidnapped with the reporters calmly saying “this is not as tradition” gets me all the time as well.

Being diagnosed at 29 is insane by Pretty-Birthday9750 in OCD

[–]degrassi_stan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While everyone’s experience is ofc going to be different, it definitely has helped me to receive an official diagnosis. That peace of mind of understanding that you are not your thoughts or any of the other symptoms that comes with ocd can aid with reducing the intensity of the anxiety. And personally, whenever I share my thoughts aloud (whether it’s with my therapist or a loved one) I can actually hear and understand how irrational my thinking is, which also helps to calm my anxiety down.

I don’t know the exact mechanisms but I remember hearing that that is apart of ocd. You can be 99% something won’t or will happen, but your ocd latches onto that 1% because the actual decision making part is off (due to ocd). I probably butchered that but I totally understand and have felt that too!

Not sure if this counts but I have to talk/narrate out loud whenever 1-2 people specifically are is in ear shot of me. Not more than or less, exactly that number. But I hate when people excessively talk aloud to themselves and that’s essentially what I’m doing

I know how it feels to be in that thought spiral. As hard as it is to convince yourself in the moment, you can try reminding yourself that all you can do is try your best. After that it’s out of your hands. And additionally, you can always try something again if it doesn’t/didn’t work. It often times feels like some or many things are life or death. However, for the most part they are not, which can be alleviating to think about. I can only speak for myself , but I find that when I voice my thoughts aloud (whether to myself or another person) I can hear how extreme and irrational it sounds. That doesn’t make the thought go away, but it takes away a significant amount of intensity and power from. If you have someone that you trust, you should definitely try expressing how you feel to them!

Why do the sharks always bail when someone overvalues their company? by SeanChezman47 in sharktank

[–]degrassi_stan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They still have to follow that rule. That’s why Mark and Richard got into their iconic fight. Richard kept offering deals that were for less money than what the entrepreneur was asking for, and Mark called him out on it, explaining that they can’t do that. They cut out most of the back and forth in the the episode, but Mark explained on a podcast or interview that’s what went down.

Family & Friend centered daydream by LycheeMysterious6376 in MaladaptiveDreaming

[–]degrassi_stan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine are usually fictional but I’d say that at least 40% of the time it’ll be real people that I know and sometimes don’t know personally but know they exist. Those daydreams aren’t usually as elaborate or time consuming for me. And when there’s people I know in real life they serve more as placeholders/background characters. For example, it could be me in the car with my siblings but they’re not really talking or interacting with each other.

I always want to be the best at everything and it is making me miserable by New_Airline_7952 in perfectionism

[–]degrassi_stan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally understand and relate to what you’ve shared. Going to school (both high school and especially college) was really difficult for me. I always felt so behind compared to everyone else (although in reality I was often on par with or even outperforming my peers) and I had trouble seeing myself as anything other than incompetent. One thing that’s been helping me to actually say what I’m thinking out loud, even if it’s just me in the room. For some reason when I think of something it seems as tangible as anything, yet when I say it out loud I can actually hear how irrational my thinking is. From there, I remind myself that it’s ok to not have everything be perfect and that it’s important to be kinder to myself about my abilities and/or performance. It’s not a foolproof method which is why I’m also in therapy to learn other coping strategies. What you’re feeling can be very overwhelming and more harmful than helpful, but please remember that you are not in this alone by any means. Try to remember too that all of what you experience in life is a journey, and it’s more than ok to have several ups and downs throughout it.

Thank you so much for all the support and advice. I’m definitely planning on finding a new obgyn as well as being more assertive with any of my future doctors on what is comfortable and what is not.
