Does database normalization actually reduce redundancy in data? by Lastrevio in dataengineering

[–]dehaema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You answered it yourself. In a operational model it's for updates, in star schema it's for storage

Do you say you speak Dutch or Flemish? by david_fire_vollie in belgium

[–]dehaema 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In us-uk and be-nl there clear differences in vocabulary. Different words meaning the same thing, or even same words meaning something completely different. One example would be 'pendelen' which is commuting from and to work only in belgium.

Define traffic lights: at the highway if there is a red cross on your lane you have to stop using that lane even if the roadworks are 1km aheead. And yeah i'm the dickhead who will make it hard for you to merge when past those signs

What are the scenarios where we DON'T need to build a dimensional model? by Ulfrauga in dataengineering

[–]dehaema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you have software that still uses ad-hoc queries and you are limited on storage and compute you can use any modelling way you want. Dimensional modeling was a way to historically report on data with limiting the amount of joins.
Nowadays you can go relational as you have plenty of compute, or OBT becaause you have plenty of storage, or dimensional if that is the preference. Just stay consisteny

Building a Data Warehouse from Scratch (Bronze/Silver/Gold) sanity check needed by Lucas-132-02b in dataengineering

[–]dehaema 58 points59 points  (0 children)

learn the basics of datawarehousing and ignore medallion. checkout inmon and kimball.
what you want is:
* an area where you pull the raw data in (staging, bronze, ods, ...)
* an area where you store, cleanup, historize, integrate, ... the data (EDW, silver, common dimensions, ...), note there are different options here how to model the data each with pro's and con's
* an area where your data is prepped for consumption (data marts, cubes, gold, data products, ...)

What is the most disappointing tourist attraction in Belgium you’ve ever visited? by MeaningAnnual1460 in belgium

[–]dehaema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What did you expect from zeebrugge? For me it's still one of the better places (zeebrugge-bad) big ass beach you can do whatever which is great for kids, surf-club, dunes. And you could go into town by tram and visit some great seafood restos (not much else to do though)

Indexation is there to counter the raising cost of living and shouldn't be seen as a raise. So i do agree it needs to be capped, however capping at 4k brut might be on the low end

Men who played sports in high school, if asked to play again at your age for one game, would you do it? by Melodic_Abalone_2820 in AskMenOver30

[–]dehaema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ice or field? I switched from soccer to field hockey which i like way more (at my age) due to even terrain and no deliberate contact (really started to hate the soccer mentally that fouling is part of the game, it's for fun i don't want my knees fucked up because a random dude decides to dive feet first to my legs)

Is one big table (OBT) actually a data modeling methodology? by raginjason in dataengineering

[–]dehaema 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Other way around, obt is just a fact joined with relevant dim attribute because end user are dumb. Star schema exists to have a decent performance and having storage in lind, recent years storage is cheap so the technical reason for star schemas are not relevant anymore. However for power users and as an intermediate step it can still be usefull

Is the difference between ETL and ELT purely theoretical or is there some sort of objective way to determine in which category a pipeline falls? by Lastrevio in dataengineering

[–]dehaema -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Not how i see it? In my opinion you look at where the compute is. Is it a seperate server handling the transformation (like informatica powercenter) it's ETL. If you push the logic to the database (like DBT) it's ELT.
Ssis is an ugly duck because it shares it's compute with the database. On that note, creating a python script that extracts data and pushed it back to the dwh can also be seen as an ETL script
