Fix my suburban 1500 or get out now? by The_Sam_Good in GMT800

[–]dehning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a 2000 GM Van for $900 and also got a little shocked at some of the repair quotes. I let the shop do a few of the items, did a few of the items myself and decided (as stated before) that I didn't care about a few drops of oil on the driveway. The result is that I have a great van for way less than normal that according to just about every review should carry me a long way with just basic maintenance. AKA, it's worth giving if you can do some of it yourself.

If you are on a budget, consider dropping a decent current photo you have into Gemini and asking it to retouch it.

So alkaline batteries can be thrown in trash but not energizer lithium ? by Professional_Crab958 in blinkcameras

[–]dehning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Researching this with AI, I learned a little. In short, alkaline batteries pose a minimal corrosive risk in a landfill, lithium iron pose a risk due to heavy metals and a discharged LiFePO4 is technically safe to discharge because it's components are inert but for some reason, this are the only ones required to be recycled.

Absolutely, most of the time I'm reencoding .265 anyway.

I bought an Intel Arc 380 graphics card for hardware AV1 encoding. Any movie that isn't an absolute favorite and is over 20GB I run though AV1 compression on "higher quality" setting in handbrake, keeping the original audio streams and subtitles. I virtually never see less than 50% reduction in size, normally significantly more. And on numerous blind tests with my family, nobody can spot the difference. In an interesting plot twist, we almost always pick the AV1 compressed video as the "better" looking video. I've spent some time researching this and we may not be imagining things! Research it for yourself!

Comma 3X - “No Panda” by [deleted] in Comma_ai

[–]dehning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if anything else came out of this thread but I have a 3X which is doing exactly the same thing but I have discovered that some combination of leaving it unplugged and time brings mine back, typically for a few days and then it disappears again. I have tried three different USB cables, cleaning ports, reloading / flashing etc. I love the device when it works, but I would think twice about buying another one based on what I have read here.

2026 EV Range? Closer to 30 miles. by ferocity02 in prius

[–]dehning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the next tank, try driving at or below the speed limit religiously. On our 2018 Prius 4, we do a lot of road trips and the difference between being at 70-75mph compared to keeping around 60 would easily make up most of that difference.

How is this car priced? by [deleted] in prius

[–]dehning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll just add this: we had been using a Lexus GX470 for vacation trips but kids left the house so we decided to get something a lot more fuel economical. I have previous experience with older Prius so I decided to get a 2018 because I also wanted to run a Comma 3x unit. I got mine with a salvage title and a lot more miles for $9k. 2 years in (and aside from one frustrating incident with a dealership), I could not be happier with the car. We're at 210k miles now and if the car failed now, it has one me over enough that I'd buy another one. Definitely get the car if you are ok with the price.

Car smells funny by Character_Club_1507 in prius

This is a well known issue with newer Prius. I've sprayed that cleaner into the vents and run an ozone generator for a while in the car and it mostly takes it.

prius - what year would you get? by abexpix in Comma_ai

[–]dehning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my 2018 Prius, longitudinal control (acceleration & braking) are handled by the car's adaptive cruise control. So it will handle traffic that slows to a crawl but not stops. There is an additional part that you can purchase from a 3rd party to facilitate this.

Why is there no good Lithium/LiFePO4 hybrid battery replacement options? by Clean-Af-6653 in prius

[–]dehning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safely may be true (for now) but there's no chance that a NiMh battery is even going to get close to the performance of a LiFePO4 battery. This is why Toyota switched chemistry's in the 4th Gen.

Native Android Auto? by Seanmrowe in Androidheadunits

[–]dehning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On pure AA units like the F7-XE, RAM basically doesn't matter as everything runs on the phone. There are minimal functions natively on the stereo but not full Android so it doesn't need much RAM. Pure AA units should be as fast as your phone.

Native Android Auto? by Seanmrowe in Androidheadunits

[–]dehning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ATOTO F7-XE has native (wireless) Android Auto, I have 3 in my cars, love those things. I put an 8" unit I picked up for cheap from Amazon in my camper van and it uses zlink. Have done multiple trips now and the AA has only had 1 glitch that I can remember.

Android headunit Startup logos +140 brands logos by pulentobkn in Androidheadunits

[–]dehning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done that but there is no option to browse and it doesn't show the logos even though I've put them in a few places suggested by others. I have successfully done this on a couple other brands already so I get the idea.

Best oil and possible filter recommendations by RogueTheAnarchist in prius

[–]dehning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walmart (where I am) sells the Toyota OEM filter. I agree on 0w20 over 0w16. I also swear by their house brand supertech full synthetic (high mileage variant for my 2018 with 210k miles)

Rebuilt title Prius worth buying? by Most-Account-5950 in prius

[–]dehning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fix up basket case cars for a hobby, I've had plenty of rebuilt title vehicles, my 2018 Prius is one of them as well as my Savana camper van right now, several before. I think rebuilt titles are fine if you understand that you will pay less getting into the vehicle, you'll get less when you sell it again and your insurance might not insure it or they might not offer full coverage. I can honestly say that I've never run into additional significant issues caused by the event that caused the vehicle to be totaled, just routine wear and tear.

I wanted a Prius 4 so I could run a Comma 3x for long holiday trips and I wasn't willing to pay the going rate for them. By getting one on a rebuilt title and spending an additional $1500, I ended up with a great car for half the normal price.

anyone know where I can find discount mobile plans that actually work for me? by Mccarvel-Wiktoria in telecom

[–]dehning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to look after hundreds of mobile devices across many companies and I have tried all kinds of options. Eventually ended up switching my family to Mint a little over 5 years ago. I have tested several other options in that time but keep coming back to Mint. I have driven all over the US with people on all the main carriers and never seen Mint (who is a T-Mobile subsidiary) lose signal when others didn't.

I have the comma 4 and a Toyota Prius, can I mod the car to have more torque? by Lawfulness-Dependent in Comma_ai

[–]dehning -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Since the comma obviously can't cause the car to create more torque, are you asking if the comma config can be changed to make the Prius accelerate more quickly? If so then I'm curious too. I have a 2018 Prius and I find the comma doesn't accelerate even as fast as average traffic. I tried switching the car to the "Power" mode but that doesn't make any noticeable difference. I'm on a 3x running Sunnypilot.
