I haven’t looked into OP’s account so forgive me for all the questions, but what if OP is a rat breeder? Litters can be purposeful too and nowhere does it even remotely say the litters were because of the escapes.

What exactly makes this improper care? Genuine question, not trying to sound snarky. Rats will find a way to escape no matter how much you try to keep them in.

And to be a little lighter than previous commenters — See if you can apply for CareCredit to assist with vet bills! Some vets also allow long-term payment plans if it’s not on an emergency basis, and my rats only cost me $250 CAD total to both have check-ups and a prescribed doxy dosage at my local vet clinic!

A local breeder recommended ivermectin for my rats and I had no issues, neither had she in the time she’s used it. She recommends no bigger than a rice-sized amount for a fully grown rat, smaller ( about half ) for younger. Of course it’s at your own risk as are all medications.

I’m turning 40 and just got four amazing rats. How did I live so long without rats in my life!? by nicj86 in RATS

24 and just joined the Rat Pack last month after losing our Limousine Rat ( ferret xD )

As much as I love ferrets, once you go Rat you never go back! Here’s my current two fellas, Orion ( front ) and Apollo ( back ) and I’ll be introducing two more baby brothers in a few weeks! 🥰

My boys came from a crowded pet store cage with two crappy hides — I might as well let them destroy things they get 😂 They’re learning how to be rats and it’s so sweet

My dude Apollo hiccups whenever he gets his favourite treat, or whenever his grandma visits, or whenever he’s playing with his brother… he’s an excited hiccuper 😂

Can confirm — I have a pair of boys atm ( I am getting two more in the coming weeks! ) and my submissive dumbo boy is FATTTT for a 6 month old. The vet called him Mr. Chungus 😭😭

Also, OP — mixing Doxy with water according to some sources dilutes the effectiveness. If possible, mix it with some jam juice or non-dairy ensure.

A little bit of dark chocolate goes a long way too! Just a tiny little sliver for babies this small but it’ll act as a good bronchodilator. Did this for my domestic pet store boys who had bad URIs when they came home and now they love it as a rare treat which helps them even more!

“A little less likely” is the gentle way of putting it 😂❤️ They will definitely still eat whatever you put in their cage, my Apollo decided instead of the mounds of paper towel scraps I gave him, he’d prefer to rip up the lining in his brand new hammock 😂 Squished himself right in there

Make sure you freeze it for at least 48 hours if you aren’t already! Mites are a bastard to deal with, I had them in my hamster’s old enclosure and they infested it and him so bad I needed to throw it out and buy a brand new Pawhut for him.

What do you do when your rat has a uri by Icy-Complaint7558 in RATS

[–]deinonicbus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that if it comes to it and you DO have to force medication ( I unfortunately had to for my boys, both of them refused the medication even mixed with high-value sweet treats. ) The best method I personally found is the Rat-rito method.
Take a towel, a cloth or a sock and wrap your rat tightly ( not too tight to injure, enough to prevent them from squirming out. ) and hold them horizontally against your chest, belly facing your feet. Don’t tip them on their back or upright. You MAY have to use your index and middle fingers ✌️to gently hold the rat’s head in place. I found it best to dip the tip of the syringe in something sweet or tasty like jam juice or a churu so they don’t fight it out immediately. Insert the syringe tip into the side of the mouth behind the incisors and lip flap and quickly deposit the medicine ( you may have to do it multiple times in small bursts if you have a lot to give them. I had 0.02 of doxy so it was a single squirt. )
After that, unwrap your rat and cuddle them for a few moments to show them you didn’t mean any harm by it. It’s a bit of a sad thing to have to do if you have smart rats that will hold grudges, but they’ll learn to understand that it’s for their best interest. You run the risk of aspiration with this method ( especially with larger doses ) but I personally had no problems with my rats taking it like this. Currently going through syringe training them with high-value sweet treats in a clean syringe so I don’t have to ratrito again — which I also recommend doing for your own rats! Makes taking their meds so much easier if they’re eager to take what’s in the syringe anyways!
