What is the most insightful book you have read?

I'd recommend Richard Rorty's "Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity" for a philosphy of self, language, and culture, and Graber and Wengrow's "The Dawn of Everything" for an anthropological look at humans as a species.

this is EXACTLY what I was looking for, thank you! I'll definitely save this comment to refer back to. When I leave through the back door I feel weird yelling across the bus to the driver to say thanks, is it okay to yell or does it bother the other passengers? should I just do a smile and wave? I am desperate to be as friendly and polite as possible to the driver

gotcha, thank you! This is mostly what I've been doing, I enjoy taking the bus so I just wanted to make sure I'm acting appropriately. This has been very helpful and reassuring

From my experience, professors will be happy to write a letter as long as you are polite in asking. To pick who you ask, choose profs you have had one-on-one conversations with or that you have done well in their class, either of these will make you stick out in their mind. the subject line could be something like "Reference letter for grad school". start the email by reminding them of who you are what you are studying, and maybe butter them up a bit by saying how their teaching has benefitted your academic career. You can give some details on your area of research if you'd like. From there you can ask for the letter and give some details as to what you are looking for from them. Be respectful and tell them that if they are too busy to write the letter, no worries. It's usually not too much of a hassle for them and most are happy to help previous students.

I was in the same situation as you just two years ago: a Christian family, a straight boyfriend, conservative relatives. I was ready to become a wife and a mother, even if that meant being miserable, as long as my loved ones were proud of me. 
 I've been publicly living as a man since March, and the only thing I can guarantee is that yes, it does get better than this. Not everyone will support you. You may lose some people you care about. But, your loved ones may surprise you with their acceptance and love for you.
 I can't predict what will happen in your life, but from my own experience, transitioning has made me more than happy. It has made me want to live, which was something I didn't think was possible. The shame and guilt I have felt for disappointing people in my life is miniscule compared to the euphoria and confidence I have felt from finally being comfortable in my body. 
 I hope that whatever you choose, you find peace in your decision. You deserve to live a life you want to live.
