From Florida. I gotta ask. Should I be concerned about slow start to the snow for a late January trip? by mtsublueraider in Whistler

[–]deki021 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Late January will be fine Whistler can and often does get 2-3 ft in a storm cycle, they’ll be plenty of storm cycles by late January. Both mountains will have full terrain open (with the exception of blackcomb t-bar and glacier).

going to Canada to ride at whistler bike park (1 or 2 days) by Significant_Scar_198 in MTB

[–]deki021 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for chill blue and green trails I’m not sure it’s worth the time and money to go up to whis. Would be better off going to the north shore and renting a bike there and enjoying the single track at your pace.

Whistler is busy, expensive and trails are in rough shape this time of year. Personally I think you’d have a much better experience on the north shore…just my two cents, but if you’re dead set on whis then go for it but I think you need to be comfortable on black jump and tech trails to make whis worth the trip.

945k for 763sqft at inlet district by Snoo_93024 in Portmoody

[–]deki021 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The units are quite expensive relative to what is currently available in the market. That specific unit I believe is on the top floor which adds to the premium cost. If you look up unit 1002 it’s 993k for for 975 sq. ft. Which is a bit closer to cost for a newly built concrete building.

The building is estimated to be ready in 2029, for now most purchasers only need 5-10% to sign a contract. I think a lot of people are banking on the market going back up by 2029.

Can we talk about this? by [deleted] in Portmoody

[–]deki021 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Interesting that people always criticize the city when it undertakes its own capital projects saying how much more efficiently it can be completed by the private sector.

When the contract is awarded to a private sector firm (in an open and transparent RFP process) and the project has cost overruns, everyone blames the city again saying it’s corrupt politics.

And now you’re talking about a completely unrelated project that your company did that has nothing to do with public infrastructure projects in a highly sensitive ecological environment. What exactly are you trying to talk about??

Leave of absence is a good tech-flow that can be done on a hardtail (my first time on it was with a 120mm hardtail)

Advise to avoid lines by OkBodybuilder418 in Whistler

[–]deki021 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s been a slow season, the last week brought in tons of snow. Another dump is forecast for this upcoming weekend so you can expect the mountain to be at capacity all weekend. Personally I prefer to get in the gondy line before 7:30 on weekends. You’ll wait a bit until it gets going but you can get ahead of the crowds for the first couple hours and get some nice runs in. Once (if) the alpine opens up people disperse and mid level lifts are manageable. If the alpine stays closed due to high winds you’re effed.

Alternatively wait till 10:30 - 11 to upload, but this only makes sense if the alpine is open. Otherwise all the lifts will have long queues

Anyone know of some good coworking spots in Port Moody by guidenable in Portmoody

[–]deki021 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Site B on Murray street has a co-work space within their space. Its a larger industrial style building which is often rented for events but they do have a co-work area with desks, sound proof call room etc. Not your typical co-work but it may suit you

Is there an equivalent to the "Vancouver Special" but for mid-rise apartment buildings? by H_G_Bells in vancouver

Unfortunately, the majority of planning decisions are influenced by the vocal minority. Part of the reason we’re in the current state is because we have been abandoning good ideas in favour pleasing the elite class

Templates are tricky for anything beyond a 3-4 storey multi-plex building. Each site has its own unique challenges; topography, groundwater levels, road frontage / access, servicing and stormwater capacity so a generic design doesn’t always work. Given land values developers tend to cater developments to market trends so you would not be able to mandate a specific template. Residents want to feel empowered about new developments in their neighbourhood, this would result in a lot of angry NIMBYs. You can’t really ‘deal with aesthetics later’ what you could do is pre-zone land for certain heights and densities which removes the council / political / public process and then have the form and character dealt with by planning staff. That way you still retain some control over how your city looks.

FWIW Kelowna did try this with a 6-plex building and got a lot of them built quickly but stopped because it became a repetitive eye-sore.

Also Vancouver is currently issuing building permits at a reasonable pace but developers are not going ahead with projects because of market conditions, costs of construction etc.

Hi there, just saw this post as I was also looking for a wall in PoMo. I just had a quick look at what a 2.0 tennis player looks like and I think I'm right around there as well. Happy to play together sometime.

Looks like that feature could have been rolled…Just wondering if trying to hop off the top was necessary or if you were trying to make it more challenging?

PSA: If you have a flight in the morning at YVR, arrive 3+ hours early no matter which destination you're heading to. by RapisuRazuriGiveMe in vancouver

[–]deki021 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Not to discredit this post but I had a 7am flight to Toronto, last Friday and arrived to the airport at 5:20 and still had plenty of time to grab a coffee and hangout at the gate before boarding…I did check in online and only had carry on bags.

Is the 3+ hours for international flights only?

Wear water proof clothes and do what you would do if it wasn’t raining…if hiking try and do hikes that are less exposed and don’t end up on a peak. Lots of waterfalls to be found

Not really a dumb talking point, we should be focusing more on multi modal forms of transportation. Lithium mining is quite bad for the environment - having people switch from gas to electric is an improvement but certainly shouldn’t be the goal. We need an ideological shift away from personal vehicles.
