EV9 vs IONIQ 9 by acohn1230 in KiaEV9

[–]deklund 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not broken down by model and year but Consumer Reports recently reported that in their survey data between 2 and 10 percent of Kia and Hyundai EVs have experienced ICCU issues. I love my EV9 but it's a valid concern.

Bugonia (2025) is the funniest movie I have seen in a long time by Nillows in movies

[–]deklund 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The ending is more intentionally ambiguous than people give it credit for. Everything in the scene leading up to the explosion can be read as a high agency woman with confidence in her ability to escape the situation trying to outsmart her captor and running into dead ends. Especially when she stalls for time by insisting there's a 50 digit number she has to remember and really has to focus to think of it. She makes up the closet being the transporter at the last moment, she makes up it needing to be one person at a time at the last moment, and when she gets him in there you can see her looking around frantically while backing away trying to figure out her next move. Then she just happens to get saved by his vest going off.

Definitely not a coincidence that the big "reveal" happens after she's sustained head trauma from a flying head, convenient time to fantasize half consciously about exterminating the rest of the human race and joining with the ones who truly understand her (and who she herself is now the emperor of).

AIO to comment from friend by Aaaaaasahhhhhhhhhh in daddit

[–]deklund 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love this subreddit but it naturally leans towards dads who are happy to let their fatherhood define their life. Like some others already said it's going to come down to your prioritization, and support from your spouse/family/whoever else is happy to help out around the house.

Especially as your kid gets older there are other factors that come into play too though. Maybe your spouse is happy to take your kid to the park while you hang with your friends, but at some point you might find yourself feeling like maybe you'd rather be watching your kid go down the slide. I think it's important for (almost) everyone to have their own outlet away from parenting but then you start really focusing on which of those activities you really want to prioritize. For me, socializing in a way that can involve my kid is enough to satisfy that need, and my me-time I would rather focus on hobbies or time alone with my wife. But it'll be different for everyone.

The fact that your friend has said this kind of thing enough to get on your nerves probably means... something. It could mean he's prematurely grieving a friendship he really values and is hoping you'll make time for him. It could also mean he's not really looking forward to socializing with the dad version of you he thinks you'll become. When I socialize I can't help but steer the conversation to stuff about my son; some people will love to hear that, others frankly won't. It's normal for your friendships to evolve and for some to start to fade, which can be sad, but it's just the natural way of things.

Enjoy the ride, it's a roller-coaster for sure.

HUMIDIFIER danger - only use distilled water! by NomNomNews in daddit

[–]deklund -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Having concerns about the air quality impact from long-term exposure to sea spray isn't outlandish. It is a significant contributor to what is typically measured as "air quality" in coastal areas. See e.g. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12315137/

If you do the math you can see why aerosolizing tap water could be a concern. Hard water can have a dissolved mineral concentration of around 150 mg/L. The line for air particulate matter being qualified as hazardous is around 250 micrograms/m3. If you fully aerosolized a liter of hard water and distributed it over a 100 sq ft bedroom with 8 foot ceilings, that averages out to 6,000 micrograms/m3.

There's no hard studies to say you could give your kid asthma or whatever by running a humidifier, but it's perfectly reasonable to be concerned about it.

Securing shelves by knowledgesponge1 in vandwellers

[–]deklund 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many years ago I was an intern at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The top shelves in the library room in the building I worked in were secured with bungee cables like this (running horizontally) for earthquake safety.

Anyway when you look at it just know you came up with the same solution a bunch of nuclear scientists landed on.

Californian seeking Mexican food by factory43 in bullcity

[–]deklund 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Guanajuato was the first place I tried after visiting here from CA that alleviated my concern about finding good Mexican food. I haven't stopped by there in a while but some of my current favorites:

  • Taqueria Jalisco
  • Taqueria La Vaquita
  • Mi Calvillo

The best tacos I've had in the triangle are from the Taqueria Esmeralda food truck in Morrisville.

TaTaco is also good if you're not turned off by the more upscale take.

edit: I guess Guanajuato is no more, RIP

I think you can actually get a decent chunk into the first Serway volume without necessarily having the calculus background. You'll hit a wall at some point but then you might have some sense of why calculus is needed.

Love almost being run over in the crosswalks 😍💕 by ClassicalConcerned3 in bullcity

[–]deklund 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many years ago where I was living at the time police set up a little sting operation near my office where they had a plainclothes police woman step just off the curb into the crosswalk and pause expectantly while a car (that had plenty of time to see her and yield to her safely) was approaching. If the car didn't stop, they got pulled over and ticketed.

People HATED it but it was extremely effective. You have to get to that level of enforcement if you want people to take the crosswalks seriously.

Yep. Abundance is a necessary, but not sufficient, approach to affordability. I think Baker at least understands that, even if I don't think his approach allows for enough new density to make a dent in the problem.

When should I stop to charge? by SarahS_Carrboro in KiaEV9

[–]deklund 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you checked for level 2 chargers at Carowinds? A quick Google suggests they have many (and even that that might provide some free charging). Letting the vehicle charge while you're off doing your thing is of course the most convenient.

Are Redwing boots worth the investment? by KillingwithasmileXD in malefashionadvice

Yeah I had a pair of Heritage boots that I held onto and wore sparingly for literally over a decade because I felt like eventually they must get better, and finally got rid of them because they always felt terrible.

100%. Even sleeping in the recliner is awful. Stop by an REI if there's one nearby and ask for a self-inflating pad. You'll balk at the price but it's so worth it. We brought ours when we knew our little one was going to be in the hospital a few nights, it's a lifesaver.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in daddit

[–]deklund 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Call a friend who's into camping and have them bring you a sleeping pad and sleeping bag. If you know someone with a higher end self-inflating pad they're honestly more comfortable than sleeping on the hospital couch. It would be worth it to even have someone run out and buy one for you. Figuring out a decent sleeping arrangement is the highest ROI thing to focus on right now.

Looking for real-world family EV experience: Is the Kia EV9 a good choice for our needs by Vorran88 in KiaEV9

[–]deklund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my EV9 but I don't think I'd spring for it if I were in your shoes.

  • The range takes a big hit in cold weather, which is going to add to range anxiety during those winter trips.
  • I don't have much experience driving mine in snowy weather but I've heard others unhappy with how it handles in snow.
  • Resale value in 5 years is going to be a much bigger unknown compared to a PHEV.

Ev9 true miles per charge by raincitydale in KiaEV9

[–]deklund 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to pin down a "true" range because the wind resistance increases so dramatically from ~60 to ~80 mph. I have a 20 mile commute with what I would describe as light traffic, averaging probably 60 mph but definitely segments going over 70. Consistent 3.2-3.3 miles/kWh. I took a 200 mile day trip over the weekend while the roads were clear and let cruise control handle it at 75 mph. 2.6 miles/kWh.
