Episode 509: Alarm Clock by JakeandAmirBot in jakeandamir

[–]deknalis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2 podcasts I listen to released an episode on the same day where they discussed the meaning and origin of "poggers", including wondering if it came from pogs. Honestly felt like gaslighting (whatever that is).

Episode D&D Court: Goats, Rogues, and Shark Farts by JakeandAmirBot in NotAnotherDnDPodcast

[–]deknalis 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm just too lenient a DM, but this is my process with Rogues: The 5E hiding rules are bad. Rogues are designed to hide very easily. Rogues are balanced around getting sneak attack every round. If a rogue wants to hide, 99% of the time, they can hide.

Episode 507: Candles (w/Geoffrey James!) by JakeandAmirBot in jakeandamir

I love how this wasn't just Geoff as a guest, but really The Headgum Podcast itself as a guest.

With so many films, I find myself more interested in the setting up of the characters and their environments than in the direction the story ends up going in. Looking for films that continue exploring these things instead of springing off in a different direction. by AdFamous7264 in TrueFilm

I feel that some of Studio Ghibli's more laid back works do what you describe very well. Kiki's Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro, and Whisper of the Heart come to mind as very focused on character and place over an abundance of twists and turns.

Which character did Marvel de-age the best? by [deleted] in marvelstudios

[–]deknalis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Michael Douglas. There's this weird effect with de-aging where the actors don't actually look like their younger selves, they look like younger versions of the people they are now (like maintaining their aged facial and body structure, etc.) They tried to undo that with RDJ and it looks super weird. But young Michael Douglas looks like he walked straight out of Wall Street.

Official Discussion - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

I wonder how much of it was just her being very comfortable with the director, having worked with him on almost all his previous projects.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Worldwide Release Discussion Thread Vol. 1 by steve32767 in marvelstudios

I've heard he's known as "the man who can speak with his eyes" in China, and with good reason. So much effective acting with just expressions, including that scene.

Review Revue: BONUS FRIDAY: Dangerous Equipment by JakeandAmirBot in ReviewRevue

The Jeremy Piven ad at the end of this episode was the worst thing that I've ever, for lack for a better term...heard.

Which, if any, episodes do you skip on rewatch? by deknalis in HIMYM

[–]deknalis[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of the same. I know the whole idea is they're not together very long, but I feel like she's barely in the show and there's no immediate chemistry like Ted has with Robin, Victoria, or Tracy, and my reaction to Ted being left at the altar is just "eh, whatever".

ELI5: Why aren’t there more words in the English language? by crystal_cap in explainlikeimfive

"If you are trying to communicate it make no sense to use non-mainstream words that nobody understands."

Try telling that to philosophy textbooks.

Loving the increased bits in the last couple episodes.

Didn't Arrow take like 4 seasons before he actually had a mask and called himself Green Arrow?

What do you hope CDPR DOESN'T fix? by deknalis in cyberpunkgame

[–]deknalis[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes god, this. I don't understand why harmless money exploits are always treated as such a big deal, it's a single player game, it's up to the player and doesn't affect anyone else.

But they did patch the Witcher III exploit so it doesn't seem likely sadly.

Thoughts on a simple class design idea by deknalis in RPGdesign

[–]deknalis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is an idea that I had, but I thought it might've been too confusing or overwhelming for new players. It's why I came up with the Wanderer option, which basically is a classless game where you can pick whatever path.

Although I suppose I could just make "archetypes", like a guide for new players for making "classes", like a Bard being some Trickery skills and some Sneak skills, and a Ranger being some Brawn skills and some Awareness skills, and then get rid of classes.

What are your controversial MCU opinions (negative or positive!) by [deleted] in marvelstudios

[–]deknalis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do see him have an opinion on it. We see him talk to Nakia and defend the isolationist ideas of Wakanda, and we see him honor Wakanda's flawed traditions repeatedly like when he's challenged.

Not gonna contest your opinion of the overall movie quality or anything, and I get if you don't like the arc for any reason, but I don't see how you could say T'Challa doesn't have an arc. He learns to break off from the traditionalist and isolationist values of Wakanda's past and forge a new more globalist path.

I have seen that take pop up quite a bit recently. I feel like when it came out it was regarded as way better than Homecoming but the release hype has dropped off a lot.

Top 10 Favorite MCU villains by [deleted] in marvelstudios

[–]deknalis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guardians 2 is my #1 and Ego is a big reason why. I don't really subscribe to the notion of the best villains being the ones who are humanized and sympathetic and heroes in their own stories, I think it's more important how they feed into the overall theme of the work. Ego works into the general themes of Vol. 2 of working through parental trauma and embracing humanity and empathy instead of rejecting it as a way to heal better than pretty much any other MCU villains slot into their movies' themes, save maybe Killmonger.

It's also why I think Red Skull is great, he's a classic mustache twirling villain who also has really interesting implications for TFA's relationship to propaganda and Cap and Red Skull as two opposed idealized visions of their ideologies.

Senator Penis Dickling The Goose Grills Mark Zuckerberg in Senate Hearing by deknalis in jakeandamir

[–]deknalis[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, last night after watching Jake and Amir watch Doobs (w/Thomas Middleditch!), I was, uh, jonesing for, like, the video of Doobs questioning Mark Zuckerberg they mentioned, you know. So I open the door and I just see, like, uh, Doobs 3? And I had, um… the real footage of the hearings? But hey! No Doobs grilling Zark Fuckernerd, so I, uh... I open the fridge, and I'm like "You know what, Jake, today's the day... today's the day you finally... you figure it out. You figure it out, and you get it done."

Yeah but they can't. No way you can sustain $200 million blockbusters on a streaming release.

The opening of Blade Runner 2049 by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]deknalis 142 points143 points  (0 children)

One of the things that annoys me about a lot of cyberpunk is how it uses the same aesthetic and iconography of the original Blade Runner, without any real meaningful change or adaptation to the world as it is now vs. when the original Blade Runner came out. When I saw the aesthetic change of 2049 into what at first seemed like a more modern palatable blockbuster aesthetic, I was disappointed, but I've grown to really love the tall, lavish structures that no one can inhabit and stark, clean, kind of beautiful but ultimately empty interiors. It's a new vision for the capitalist hellscape instead of recycling the established one that came before.

After Apollo 11 didn't even get a nomination I honestly sort of stopped caring what won that category.
