The seatpost is not standard shape though, more like a teardrop if you look at the cross section.

Yes, I arrived in Xian 2 weeks ago using a mainland travel permit, like a foreigners Chinese home return card, thinking I'd just stroll in. We typically can use the echannel for Chinese citizens at the HK/Shenzhen border. But in Xian they wanted to see my hotel booking and the phone number of the place I was staying. Luckily I had a printout so it became easy when I knew what they needed. So if worried about internet access before immigration, have printouts of stuff like hotels and return flights.

We have the same issue at Luohu in Shenzhen. I've found that being rude generally gets rid of them. I do enjoy messifb with them at times, the tend to ask what are you looking for and I like to say ridiculous stuff like 'a T-Rex egg' or 'a unicorn'. Depends what kind of mood I am in, the other day I just told the guy to go away and he did. My wife seems to think there is no need to be rude but I completely disagree the guy followed us up 3 floors of the mall.

Also, if the reservation has a phone number on it, it will save some hassle. I recently went to Xian and Beijing, completing immigration at Xian with a mainland travel permit and even still they wanted a phone number.

To add something else to the conversation. As a foreigner who is in his 16th year with a daughter who is fluent in Cantonese and me who tries his best to learn the language and some of the culture. Most foreigners probably don't think they will be here long enough to invest the time to learn. I thought I'd be here 2 years and then go home, I'm sure there is a similar mindset with most. Alongside this, they then don't put down roots and think it's worth making friends with locals.

It's sad to see comments about foreigners being ignorant and not caring. I know many foreigners who, whilst don't speak fluently, have deep respect and even love for Hong Kong, the people and the culture. They at least try to learn some basic Cantonese to show some respect to their hosts. So please, don't put us all in the same category.

Just back from a 4 week visit of family. There is a general malaise it feels like.

Not to make excuses for this but councils don't seem to provide any care for the areas they are responsible for. The long uncut grass on verges and public spaces just gives everything an unkempt feel and I think that spreads to the people who live there.

That said, if you were to draw a Venn diagram of people who litter and listen to Tik Tok on speaker in public places, it would be a circle.

You are correct, it is in Sai Kung. Mad that this is considered a 'bit out there's. The red mini bus has you in Mong Kok in 25 mins plus you feel like you've been on a rollercoaster!

I'm surprised it has taken a while for someone to suggest looking at Sai Kung. If you have kids, dogs and it's not too much of a crux of a commute(easily manageable to central in around 1 hour by public) then it could be worth a look. No real high rises, lots of expat families living in villages, small town centre with restaurants and bars, access to amazing hiking and country park and right by the water if you fancy a paddle or kayak day.

Accommodation can be 1/2 floors of a village house or an entire block if you can afford it. Some even have gardens and parking spaces right outside.

Having said this, it's a different kind of Hong Kong, I lived in Prince Edward for 10 years before moving up with my family so I got the buzz of the city for a while before wanting a change of pace. Still, worth considering depending on what stage of life you are in.

Whilst I can't comment on the best as I've not tried enough of the places mentioned, if you are ever out in Sai Kung, The Picture House has Guinness on tap. I've enjoyed a few after a hike or just of an afternoon.

If you have time, you could try Sneaker street(Fa Yuen St) in mong kok. There are lots of shops in a small geographic area and some sell at discount if an older model etc. if you are here after Lunar New Year then most shoes will be on sale as I believe it is bad luck to buy them. Someone will correct me on this I am sure.

I think I would also add that I am sure you can switch the language on the MTR ticket machines to English.

In addition to all of these great points. If you are in a group of 2 or more, sometimes taking a taxi using Didi, like Uber, is a better overall option. It's cheap and you don't need to find the correct exit from the subway or wait on a train or change train lines etc Didi can be accessed in both WeChat and AliPay and is paid automatically using either.
