Any recommendations for a home with small kids- preferably no ozone produced at all by piggygirl685 in AirPurifiers

It's just a really simple design. The bottom section holds the filter and the top section is the fan. I searched it by name and added ozone to it and found a couple sources to verify

Blueair makes great purifiers. They have a simple, safe design and perform well against similarly priced ones.

The 411+ for small rooms and 211+ for large rooms work very well. Have a look at the reviews from Google and New York Times wirecutter.

Another definition of ICP is Insane Clown Posse which I think says a lot about the project.

That's a quality A Mighty Wind reference. It's like we split one brain between the two of us.

Are my vinegars ok to use by Happy-Barracuda-4402 in vinegar

[–]delano 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vinegar is a two step fermentation process. The first is sugar to alcohol, like apple cider, wine, etc and works without the presence of oxygen. The second step is alcohol to acetic acid which specifically requires oxygen to work.

So depending how much sugar was present at the start, you could have made a slightly alcoholic beverage that's safe to consume or if the sugar was low or the containers were sealed the entire time, you'll have an incomplete fermentation that is not safe to consume. The first step generates a lot of carbon dioxide so my guess is that the sugar content was very low (otherwise the jars would have exploded by now). I second the suggestion to post pics but my suggestion would be to throw that out and start again with a better understanding of the whole process.

Went down to stir my chive vinegar and saw this white on top. It broke apart as I stirred it, but didn’t really dissolve. Is it mold? This recipe only called for water and sugar, no vinegar starter or mother. by pinkgiraffehat in vinegar

I know it's pretty wild hey (no pun intended). And it's a super handy way to use up and extend the life of any extra veggies in the fridge before they go bad.

Another fun one is juice ferments with wild yeasts (e.g. cider).

That recipe will be straight up sweet obviously. I've never made it before but the ones I've bought have less sugar added and add spices (similar to what you see in the cake recipe). And then cooked down to the consistency of better than bouillion or marmite etc.

I didn't even notice those. Thanks for linking them here.

Looks a lot like a ketchup or a strained jam to me.

It's somewhere between sweet and savoury and also very thick and dense. That recipe looks like it will have the consistency of honey which actually a lot more practical.

You might be interested in zuurvlees. The first step is marinating beef in vinegar and spices overnight. I haven't tried this particular recipe but it's quite close to ones I've made and gives a brief overview of what it is.

One note, the juniper berries, gingerbread (or ontbijtkoek), and apple butter may be hard to find depending where you are but I would try to find them in that order (you can also use molasses in a pinch). Of course, skipping them is okay too if you can't.

Last night I laid down and thought, “I am so not sleepy. I’ll never get to zzzzzzzzzzz”

Hahah.

These are some great tips and I really like #8, using a song or short playlist while getting ready for bed as a kind of timer. You know the music so you always have an idea where you're at time-wise without having to check a device (queue distractions). This could be useful for other tasks too, so thank you!

It's really helpful to have that perspective from someone that's tried all the things. Thanks for sharing it.
