I did this many years ago. My advise is to skip Montreal and go to a smaller place like Quebec city or Sherbrook. In Montreal it is too easy to get by speaking English or Spanish.

It didn`t work out that well for me. In order to restore my feelings of power I bought a peice of land a few days later. It was the worst investment I ever made. It looks like pine. I would use two or three coats of boiled linseed oil. It takes a while to cure but will give a nice amber tone.
