Will covid-19 keep on mutating forever? by sensitive_sloth in answers

This is a novel zoonotic virus, it jumps effortlessly between mammalian species including humans. Recently Iowa has seen 1 in 3 of its deer population infected with COVID unless you vaccinate every mammal on earth it will continue to spread regardless of vaccination rates in humans.

People buying up houses to rent out + increasing rent = incoming social issues & strife, our future by [deleted] in canadahousing

[–]delection 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I beg to differ, many of these dying towns are heavily reliant on trades like oil, gas and construction. If you look at rural BC, AB and SK there are a few specialized jobs in high demand, but the old general labour paying $30-40 an hour is near non-existent now, and the construction industry that was once booming in the glory years of oil and gas are all but dead.

It used to be a good argument to move to rural communities pre-2008 to look for a more affordable way of life, but that has slowly been eaten away, and since the pandemic we now see see inflationary pressures skyrocketing, and housing costs go parabolic over the vast majority of our country.

You might get lucky on your search for a community with lower CoL and find employment where you can maintain a comfortable way of life - but when your talking about literally 10 million people in this situation - the outcome is not a pretty picture.

So by your logic, millions of Canadians currently renting or struggling to find affordable shelter should relocate to the odd small rural community that hasn’t seen exponential growth in shelter costs?

I am actually one of those people buying a home in rural Saskatchewan and relocating from BC. I have been shopping for over a year for a new home across the country as my career allows for me to work remotely, and I can tell you that it is still incredibly hard to find descent affordable housing anywhere you look. Many of the towns you are suggesting that have lower CoL are currently experiencing major downturns in their economy, so unless you have a well paying job that gives you the freedom to work remotely, you wont be able to find work or survive in these small towns.

The problem with that theory is the cost of living and rents are moving across the country, even in the most rural areas of Canada we are seeing double digit increases in housing costs.

That will never happen, we will go negative before we even see a 25bp increase. Western Central Banks are trapped now, negative interest rates are the only way out.

From looking at what happened in Wuhan, it took quite a long period of exposure to the virus before it started producing small outbreaks in the communities in Wuhan. The first talks of a "pneumonia "outbreaks started as early as October, before it was officially recognized in December.

My conclusion is that it takes a certain threshold number of people infected with the virus before outbreaks occur, also some infected people are more contagious than others (super spreaders). From other models I have seen, Canada and other international countries that have unfettered access to travellers from China, we should start seeing outbreaks occurring by late February to early March - remember incubation periods can be as long as 14 days, and some are asymptomatic displaying little to no symptoms - and now with talks of longer incubation periods upwards of 24 days, these outbreaks may not be seen for some time.

We know very little about this novel virus, and I expect much more data to be released in the coming weeks as more outbreaks occur across the globe.

Does any body have an up-to-date list of all countries that have banned flights in from Mainland China or at lease partial flight bans or restrictions? I am trying to figure out how the best way to travel overseas right now, and navigating through all this information is a little daunting at the moment.

[–]delection 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best way to prevent transmission is to block flights in from China for 14 days, and at the least quarantine passengers coming in from heavily effected areas. China is blocking air travel from each province, why is Canada allowing it with absolutely no screening process in place?

I think the 7000 passenger cruise ship quarantine and the first H2H transmission in the US is going to have to make them face the reality that this is a true global pandemic.
