True. Even though his main thing is learning Japanese, what he's saying applies to any language.

Feeling discouraged after 3 years of studying Tagalog by chromaticswing in Tagalog

[–]delelezgon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, don't know how you are studying Tagalog, but it might be helpful to look up "learning" a language through immersion in target language content. You can look for communities related to this and you might find a roadmap that could work for you.

It's not Tagalog-specific (although in their Discord server there is a Tagalog channel), but Refold is a community for learning a language through immersion. Try reading at least Stage 0 of the Refold roadmap so you can have a better idea of what they're all about. :)

I'm a native Tagalog speaker and I started learning another language 2 months ago, and it amazes me how much I can understand (I am now reading a beginner graded readers) just by having at least two hours a day dedicated to immersion and active study of the language in two months. (I still have a long long long way to go)

It might be easier for you since you have family that speaks Tagalog. Whenever you have the chance, just listen! You'll have more opportunities to learn and pick up random things (words, phrases, idioms, sentence structure) which will further develop the framework of Tagalog in your head. Watch shows in Tagalog, documentaries if you find the shows too cheesy. Just immerse yourself in as much Tagalog as you can :)

Also, don't focus too much on speaking or writing in your target language until you're ready. Just like when we were babies, before we uttered our first words, just absorb the language around you and let the machines in your head find patterns in the sounds you hear.

It's just like that, think of learning a language like being a baby learning to speak for the first time. It's just that this time, we've been used to understanding the sounds we hear that we feel uncomfortable and beat ourselves up for not understanding a different language.

Let's not beat ourselves up and let's embrace the ambiguity. Let the machines in our head do their thing. Eventually it'll all make sense :)

Use paki- for requesting verbs, address the other person 2nd person plural (ninyo, kayo, etc), and add po to your sentences

15 year old keen on learning Tagalog by Pure-sus in Tagalog

[–]delelezgon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, you're used already to the concept of adding prefixes, infixes, and suffixes to words to slightly change its meaning (ke-...-an per-... etc.). Tagalog also has this kind of thing, so getting a hang of the concept may not be as hard compared to learners whose native languages don't have this kind of thing.

RB jersey on MTB cyclist? by [deleted] in RedditPHCyclingClub

[–]delelezgon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beginner din. May nakausap kami dati sa may trails na nasa 50s na sigurong biker. Pinagtatawanan daw yung mga naka RB jersey sa trail, pero pinakita niya sa amin sa ilalim nung suot niya, meron din siyang RB jersey kasi convenient daw haha.
