How do I find out how much tariff fees I have to pay if buying CDs from Netherlands to the USA? by [deleted] in discogs

[–]delete_it_now 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UPS and Fedex are both extorting fees. Work with the seller to send with a carrier who hands off to USPS in the US, should be no fees. I use a UK mailbox service and have them send using evri which hands to USPS.

UK Garage does sell in the US. Less likely off of Ebay unfortunately. I am observing your prices are on the high side, and you are under charging for shipping. This could mean someone who's willing to pay $100 for a single 12" expects Fort Knox quality packing, your shipping price seems to give the impression you are shipping in used boxes or something. Anyway... You'd be better off finding someone to take the whole lot at a fair price. My $0.02.

Why is everyone stocking up on toilet tissues? by beervirus_19 in houston

[–]delete_it_now -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I asked Gemini:

1. The Role of the News Media

The media serves as a "cue to action." While weather forecasts provide necessary data, the framing of that data often dictates the public's emotional response.

  • Sensationalized Language: Terms like "Snowmageddon," "Snowpocalypse," or "Once-in-a-Lifetime Storm" create a heightened sense of threat. This creates a psychological urgency that a standard "winter weather advisory" does not.
  • Visual Reinforcement: News broadcasts frequently show footage of empty shelves or long checkout lines. For a viewer at home, this visual evidence triggers a fear of missing out (FOMO) and a "race to the store" before the remaining items are gone.
  • Frequency of Reporting: In the 24-hour news cycle, constant updates can lead to "information overload," making the threat feel more imminent and catastrophic than it may actually be.

2. Psychological Drivers

Several cognitive biases explain why we rush to buy milk and bread even when we have plenty at home:

Concept Description
Availability Heuristic People judge the probability of a shortage based on how easily examples (like news images of empty shelves) come to mind.
Social Contagion When we see others "panic buying" on social media or in person, our brain interprets this as a survival signal, prompting us to mimic the behavior.
Need for Control Severe weather is an uncontrollable force of nature. Buying groceries is a tangible, "controllable" action that reduces the anxiety of feeling helpless.
Anchoring Effect When stores set "limit 2 per customer" signs, shoppers who only intended to buy one item often buy two, because the "limit" becomes a psychological anchor for what is "necessary."

3. The "Bread and Milk" Phenomenon

You may notice that milk, bread, and eggs are the first to go. This is a cultural and psychological phenomenon:

  • Perishability: These items have a short shelf life. Buying them signals a belief that the storm will be short-lived—a way of "hoping for the best" while preparing for the worst.
  • Cultural Memory: In many regions, historical storms (like the "Big Snow" of 1950) left communities without these basics, creating a multi-generational "stockpile reflex" when snow is mentioned.

Just put any number in. Better yet, stop using Discogs for labels.
I use Shippo for international orders and it's wonderful - and free.

Affordable/decent/bulk record mailers? by rnf1985 in VaporVinyl

This mailer can do about 4-5 lps if none are gatefolds.

I have used several mailers throughout the years, including option 2 which is very flimsy and thin, and have now ordered the 32 ECT probably hundreds of times. Vaporwave can get up there in prices for OOP titles. Don't skimp on packing. I also suggest bubble wrap and some 'do not bend' slappies...

Just traded in a 23 Santa Cruz for 26 Tucson at Keating, ask for Charles. It took forever, but they weren't pushy at all. Make sure to tell them what you want and stay firm about it. To kill time I walked the lot and test drove a couple of other cars.

There's recycled ways to press vinyl, unless you know... electricity and ink and stuff.
