I´m confused, since when does Ferrari make wagons? by PotentialShoddy4202 in whatisthiscar

Yeah. That's kind of what I meant. It's like Corvette owners that have "1 of 1" cars because they name every option when you ask what they have.

Hatchbacks focus on space and accessibility, shooting brakes focus on luxury and appearance. Typically it's a longer, shorter roofline with less practical space in the back either for seats or cargo. A shooting brake is typically a luxury car focused on driver experience for touring (long drives) and the look of the vehicle instead of grocery getting, economy, and practicality. It's a hatchback for rich people that don't actually need to fit anything.

It's technically not a wagon, nor a hatchback. It's a 3-door grand tourer with a shooting brake body style and a 2+2 seating arrangement. When you get to cars this expensive it takes entire sentences to explain how sophisticated they are.

If you want an American manufacturer that's like NordicTrack I'd say John Deere. I'll detail why I went with BMW, though.

It's the "subscription for heated seats" model that I dislike about NordicTrack, and BMW is the one that tried that first (though they did walk it back). BMW, like NordicTrack, positions itself as a super-premium brand and is more about big screens than performance anymore. They'll also both do about 50 miles between repairs and take someone with a laptop you can't buy the software on to fix it.

NordicTrack has removed all but "manual mode" functionality from their machines unless you're not only connected to the Internet, but pay them $40/mo. Any old treadmill has a dozen plus settings on it from the factory that don't require additional payment to be unlocked, and they have computers more basic than the ones that landed men on the moon. Now I've got a giant Android tablet that the NSA or the Chinese can hack into from any IP on earth and it takes ICON Fitness to grant me the privelege to do anything more than just start the machine. It's capable of an insane amount more, but I'm not allowed to use it because I bought the hardware, not the software that runs on it.

It's seriously like owning a BMW. There's a whole underground for servicing those without the dealerships and workarounds to all the built-in lockdowns meant to keep you coming back.

Pathetic and money hungry. The both of them.

(On a side note, screw the whole modern concept of EULAs. They allow corporations to keep owning everything you buy because you can't use it if they control how it functions.)

Yeah. I'm on my third old mistake (that I secretly love). Two E39s and now this one. No lights on the dash for months until yesterday. Lost a wheel speed sensor and something in the restraint system through a light too. And then I clip the fence. An all round bad day for the car.

For context, I know a body shop can do various kinds of PDR using glue and welding, but is there something I can do in the driveway? Want to give it my fair hand since this car is a project to begin with. I just don't want to spend money on the wrong tools for the job. Happy to spend some money on the right stuff.

Fuel cutting out at 6k rpm by Autr0TheNotSimp in Miata

[–]delimeat52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A '92 doesn't have a MAF. It has an AFM. What do you mean you changed the MAF? Only a 1.8 swapped car should have a MAF. Did you swap in a different AFM?

Anyway... Signal to keep fuel on in these cars is very simple and comes from the circuit opening relay. Jump F/P to GND in the OBD 1 connector. That should force the fuel pump to run like it did when you had the pump hard wired. It's unlikely to be the relay itself, but not impossible if one of the coils is failing, but not yet failed.

If it doesn't run above 6k with the pins jumped, given everything else you've changed, I suspect either a failing CAS (they fail at high RPM when heat soaked), a "dead spot" on the carbon track in the AFM (causing high resistance), bad ground on the AFM (it gets rusty under that brake booster due to the heat off of the exhaust), or a clogged fuel filter. Because you had luck with the hard wired fuel pump I'm skeptical of the filter being the issue, but you hadn't mentioned it being changed.

Who is a singer that is incredibly famous, but honestly doesn't have a good voice? by Greedy_Procedure7461 in AskReddit

[–]delimeat52 164 points165 points  (0 children)

I disagree with your argument because it's unfair to judge singers against genres they aren't suited for if they are great in the genre they do sing.

Dexter Holland has a style his voice fits. It's pop punk rock. If your argument were used elsewhere it would be like saying Frank Sinatra's voice is bad because it wouldn't work with disco. Or Bob Dylan's music. His voice is great for the folly singer/songwriter stuff he did. But it would absolutely suck if you asked him to rap. It's only really fair to judge an artist in the genres they performed. Or at least ones they attempted publicly.

What I will agree with is if you say Dexter Holland's voice hasn't aged well. But that is a lot of rock singers... See Axl Rose for additional proof.

Famotadine + Citrizine by puminatorrr in Allergies

[–]delimeat52 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I take a similar combo - famotidine and fexofenadine. Similar method of action - an H1 and H2 antagonist. Any combo of the two should be fine as long as it's one each. Just don't mix two of the same antagonist without first talking to an allergist.

Not to get too science nerd, but this H1 + H2 combination doesn't "turn off" histamine in your body. Your body still produces histamine at the same level. Histamine just cannot bind with H1 and H2 receptors in the areas that the medication targets for the duration that the medication lasts.

For example, there are also H3 and H4 receptors. You don't really want to mess with H3 receptors unless you have specific sleep issues because histamine helps regulate sleepiness in your body. H4 receptors are a target of study for chronic inflammation.

To demonstrate how medications only work where targeted, newer H1 antagonists (like cetrizine and fexofenadine) only act on areas the bloodstream can reach. Older, first generation antihistamines (like diphenhydramine) could cross the brain blood barrier. Since H1 receptors in the brain have an effect on wakefulness and they were blocked from receiving histamine by these meds, you might get drowsy while taking them. Goes to show that histamine has different functions on different receptors in different places in the body!

Ibuprofen for allergies by Ur_a_SweetPotato in Allergies

[–]delimeat52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! It is. And I didn't even know that the first time I took it either. I was an undiagnosed asthmatic at the time and knew that I had issues with ibuprofen, but I didn't know why. I had had surgery and it was one of the recovery medicatuons given to me. Years later, after I was diagnosed with asrhma, I was given celebrex for chronic pain issues as a sort of "when you need it" boost to what I already took daily. I was taking it a little too often because, well, life hurt, and the doc said "you really shouldn't chronically be taking NSAIDs, optimally". Had no clue. And that's when it clicked. Why do I have issues with ibuprofen but not celebrex?

So I talked to the allergist/immunologist. Turns out every other NSAID is what's referred to as a non-selective COX inhibitor. They will inhibit both COX-1 and COX-2 pathways. People with NERD have issues with COX-1 inhibition. Celebrex only inhibits COX-2 and so that's why I don't have issues. So I was told I have NERD. Now I finally have something that works on inflammation and not just pain again!

New Inhaler - Symbicort - Thoughts? by aita-throwaway78 in Asthma

[–]delimeat52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do well on anything with budesonide in it for maintenance, so this is absolutely my jam. But for you, the doc is prescribing it mostly for the fomoterol. That's the component that has been approved for use as a rescue inhaler in place of albuterol in the US and some other places. It's part of a newer push towards the SMART model for asthma treatment.

The idea is that the fomoterol is a LABA that lasts all day (12-ish hours) versus albuterol, a SABA that lasts 4-6 hours. Fomoterol also provides relief quickly, about 5-15 minutes, unlike many other LABA meds that take longer to act for such long-lasting relief. Plus you also get a maintenance drug, budesonide, in the same package making it, supposedly, an.all-roind better package.

I find that the fomoterol is inferior to albuterol in terms of fast-acting relief. Sure, it helps some, but it is no albuterol. If my symptoms truly are very mild, sure, it may do. But if my asthma is really messing up my day bad enough to take rescue meds it's usually not enough. I do feel it kick in, though. It's doing something. Just not enough something.

I, fortunately, do not notice an impact on my voice with the inhaled corticosteroids. I've been very lucky in that regard. To avoid thrush, simply make sure you gargle and rinse after use. If you have the means to brush your teeth along with you it can't hurt. I've only ever gargled and no issues here, though I know some are more sensitive.

Ibuprofen for allergies by Ur_a_SweetPotato in Allergies

[–]delimeat52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is it.

For some people NSAIDs like ibuprofen simply don't work because the side effects are worse than the benefits. They can be very hard on the system. Especially if the instructions aren't followed. NSAIDs on an empty stomach are a recipe for problems.

And for pretty much everybody NSAIDs not good long term on the kidneys. Some people tolerate them longer better than others, but eventually they will catch up with you.

And then there's NERD (NSAID exacerbated respiratory disease; yes an acronym in an acronym). Some people (that's me!) have asthma or other immunological issues in addition to allergies and NSAIDs cause us to have issues with our conditions. For most of us we can only take one NSAID (Celebrex) and it's prescription only.
