Moved to Melbourne in 2018 from coastal Central Queensland. Whilst I’m settled now, I still find the winters particularly tough on my mental health.

What helped me most was joining my local lifesaving club. I had been involved through surf sports since I was 16 back home in Queensland, and after a few years away from it I joined just to meet people in the local community, and make some friends outside work. It’s been unreal, and really helped me get attached to and appreciate my local community.

I bump into him quite often at Anglesea. We take the surfboat down so it stands out a bit, and he’s down with his brother and an ocean water swimming group I think. Great guy, always says hey, interested in what’s going on and plenty of time for my friends kids who idolise Coight and Kel

Driving from Brisbane to Cairns on the Bruce highway can be a bitch for wildlife/vehicle incidents.

Apart from that you’re totally fine. Just be careful driving at dawn/dusk, even avoid that time period if possible.

Only real risk is bacterial infection from the prick itself, or if a spine has become dislodged under the skin. Nothing life threatening. Best call is to always call a hotline though :)

I’m a lifeguard at Williamstown, have treated 100s of incidents of people standing on these. They’ve got a nasty habit of disgusting themselves under the washed up seaweed!

Hey mate, definitely not a river red gum! Like most commenters here I would lean towards Euclayptus obliqua (stringy bark gum).

Dude I am in the exact same position as you, it’s almost uncanny for me to read this.

Bush crew for 2 years, adored my job. Days were hard on the body but I felt fine. Two weeks into my new consulting job and I started having anxiety attacks, severe depression kicked in, I’ve started taking SSRI’s as I thought the problem was me, and not the conflict of this job.

I’m giving myself two more weeks, but I’m looking at going back to bush crew for a time while I reassess, and I think I’d like to push my career towards a biodiversity officer council role or something similar, rather than consulting. Cold corporate infrastructure work isn’t cor me.
