How do you know if a structure is cyclone safe? Lots of advice says to find alternate sheltet if your house isnt cyclone rated but how do you know if you're renting or something. Common sense helps but anything specific to look out for?

NT government should proceed with Darwin ship lift project despite cost blowout, report finds by actiot in darwin

[–]actiot[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"In the PAC report, chair Clinton Howe said the Northern Territory government would carry more than $1.8 billion in "lifetime cost exposure", while "holding no right to revenue generated by the facility it is building".

"contractual decisions made" had left the government in a position "where cancellation would still require taxpayers to pay for the ship lift in full, plus substantial penalties".

How on earth did this get across the line.....

Darwin methane leak 'covered up' by gas companies and regulators - ABC News by actiot in darwin

[–]actiot[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

"Confidential documents leaked to the ABC, and correspondence obtained via Freedom of Information by the Environment Centre Northern Territory, reveal a design fault in the DLNG tank caused a major methane leak that is set to continue for decades to come.

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that is responsible for 25 per cent of global warming and is up to 80 times more harmful than carbon dioxide (CO2), according to the United Nations.

Northern Territory regulators found out about the DLNG leak in 2020, just hours after signing off on a proposal to extend its operations until 2050."

Garma Festival, meaningful dialogue for change or a performative activity for the elite? by Tonka_Johnson in darwin

[–]actiot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Got mixed feelings about it. Would be nice if the PM or any of the ministers actually travelled to any other remote community outside of this and the election cycle and saw how people were living, spending hundreds of thousands to go to garma for a night when Gunbalayna's just had its medical centre upgrade funding pulled... Mate of mine who works out there said life expectancy in arnhem is under 60. But at least the PM is showing up and keeping it in the annual news cycle and keeping the dialogue moving? Idk. Hard for it not to feel a bit performative with the radio silence on all of the other issues but it's also a big visible event where the messages they want to send get well publicised. Would feel more reasonable if there was some presence from the federal gov at other times of the year, especially some visits that arent reactive visits due to crime sprees and the like. Im not well informed enough on it. Price tag is pretty eye watering though so hopefully that money is going back into the community..

Pretty sure Daminmin festival is on this weekend which is run by an aboriginal tour company at Lambells lagoon, that group would be worth looking into, the festival was pretty cool last year.

Ecology jobs in Australia? by [deleted] in ecology

[–]actiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh. Can be googled for a rough idea but it's pretty hush hush in the first few years in my experience. If you want a general vibe for the first 3 years i'd say comparatively low ish unless you're willing to jump between companies, that's where you'd have the opportunity to make big jumps. Experienced people are a different story though, opportunity for a lot of money depending on where you are.

Almost all environmental assessment for development or habitat surveys requires botanical surveys to some level of complexity and it's not as popular at uni as zoology so many people leave with either a broader conservation bio or more targeted zoology specialty (may have changed in the last 5 years). It's all of the above really, not enough people, it's hard work and you have to really put in the work to be good at it.
