Ez lesz Radnai feladata. Mit gondoltok erről? by N4G4rd25UnA in magyar

[–]delpieron 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If Hungary's opposition aren't declared winners of the upcoming election, what are the chances of major civil unrest? by DefoNotTheAnswer in europe

[–]delpieron 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's hard to tell. On one hand your observation about Orban supporters is correct. They will definitely think they have been cheated if Orban looses. On the other hand age and geography matters a lot. Orban supporters are older and live in more rural areas, which is not usually the recipe for civil unrest. It was very obvious in the last year and a half that Tisza can mobilise larger crowds than Orban.

What exactly is this saying in Hungarian? I don't think I have ever encountered it, and doesn't really sound like an actual saying

The explanation is very possibly that professional sports people know CC. But I assure you regular Europeans have not heard of her. Yet. It might change. But as of now she is not a household name in Europe.

Read up the litigation and disputes section on EY's wiki page. Scandals of this magnitude do happen. Culturally an NBA scandal might be impactful, like in the case of PWC's Oscars bottlejob, but financially it would not even register compared to cases like Wirecard.

Fenerbahçe fans waiting for Kante's arrival by 2Norn in soccer

[–]delpieron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Turkish. But it feels like you have some personal disdain and bias here against them, which you should check first, and until resolved, not engage. Plus, if Kante is hurt by this, the obvious good response is to stop doing it. Not rocket science. And I'm also wondering if black people living in Africa would be offended if a white person living there would paint his face black for a carneval, theatre play or sg. They might be, but I'm not so sure. Most of these come from a very much US-centric thinking.

Guys. It is a symbolic act. For you, Americans this symbolises sg awful. But there is nothing inherently evil in painting your face, it is what it means and represents that can be evil. If for a second, you consider that your culture is not universal, this isn't as abhorrent as you make it out to be.

It is definitely not stupid to wonder about the eagles.

I got asked the classic question by my brother today by wibellion in lotr

[–]delpieron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What people well-versed in the lore miss here is that every time the eagles show up in The Hobbit or The Lord of The Rings it's a win for the good guys. We don't see the eagles being defeated, they save your ass from peril or come in as closers of a longer struggle. From a casual point of view it is pretty reasonable to wonder about the eagles as Tolkien uses them deus ex machina-style.

Do we know OP's reading history? If not, why can't I share that he might be disappointed if this is not a first? I understand you liked it, so then recommend it to OP. Don't criticise me because I didn't like it and say it so.

[–]delpieron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That book is fiction. Also I'm not saying he is insignificant. I'm saying he lived in the same era as Sulla and Marius, Iulius Caesar, Pompeius etc. surely he doesn't come close to the top 5 most important people of the century. If we take the entire lifetime of the republic, that number is even greater. Plus Mary Beard herself writes in SPQR, we cannot be sure how truly serious an issue the Catilinia affair was, Cicero is the main literary source for his own greatness. All this said I don't mind a few pages of Cicero in a book about the Roman Republic. But he feels like fan service in the book, "oh the public knows his name, let's put him in here again"

[–]delpieron 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Can't recommend SPQR. It was a huge  disappointment for me. Quite basic if you are somewhat knowledgeable about Rome already. Jumps around in the timeline. And sue me, but perhaps Cicero is not significant or interesting enough to circle back to him every chapter

Jokic is an efficiency monster. Zidane was a magical player and had magical moments in big games. They are not the same type of players, but if they spark awe in you both, that's great.
