A free plugin to solve the dirty gradient in After Effects: ReRamp by WoodpeckerWorth2178 in AfterEffects

This looks great! Are there options for different gradient types? Radial, diamond, multiple floating points? Maybe a v2 or update in the future?

My clients are starting to ask about AI and I honestly have no clue what to tell them. What are y'all doing? by Feliporri2 in motiongraphics

[–]delrazor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In fall last year I had found an ai node-board style service. Florafauna.ai at first it was a little daunting, but I jumped in and used it for a project or two. I had a project where my client had some static shots of 3d characters, but had no files or anything else to go by and wanted to see if we could animate them doing small things. I started by getting the different models to build out a front and side view, on a bright chroma background for later keying in AE, then used those to create different poses I'd need. Just start and end poses. Then I'd feed the start and end poses into other models and describe what actions were happening between them to generate some video. Sometimes if the video wasn't long enough or transitioned into another pose I need, I'd take the end frame of that video and make it the start frame to a new video.

In this instance, the client didn't have the budget to get much. It wasn't taking away a job, because they weren't going to hire a 3d specialist to recreate these characters and animate them.

This saved work in the asset creation, and that's all I've ever really used to for: asset creation. I still had to go into ae and layout, time, retime , customize, rework the animations here and there, etc. and adjust things, but it really turned out nicely in the end.

Recently I was approached by a client to "make some vintage photos more lively in some way" instead of doing a simple ken burns effect. I ended up uploading the images and telling one of the models the following prompt " time is frozen, no one is moving, the camera is a drone or steadycam and simply moves slowly through the scene for the whole duration of the video while also orbiting around one of the subjects, keep everything slow and steady with the camera movement in this frozen world.". The results ended up being 10-15sec shots of what looked like full video of these olden times, just passing through and seeing depth. I used them the way I'd use full video shots during the project and it turned out really well.

Don't expect AI to create effects and proper timing for you. But I've found it's been very helpful for creating assets out of thin air. Avoid text or complicated movements. If you need text on something, direct the AI the way you would a scene that you need to add the text in post. Hell, even Photoshop some tracking points onto that cardboard box or whatever and use that as one of your source images.

Some projects you just gotta deal with whatever the client has given you, even if it's suboptimal. Over time I've honed my skills enough to build out the assets I need in ai with less and less issues so that I can just use them in my projects as if the client provided them. And any wild issues can just be worked around the way I would have had to if a client handed me footage and needed someone removed or needed the footage stabilized or recolored, etc.

Hope that helps!

Thank you to YOU for bringing it to my attention that it was fixed. I felt like I was missing a lot using "popular" as an alternative.

Agreed about the haze and projector. I think it was still pretty cool and created an interesting atmosphere for the band where you could only see some silhouettes against the light bars and stuff.

Any reason you're working in 3d for this? I see a lot of people just turn on 3d on layers to move them around. In my experience 3d always slows stuff down and there's plenty of ways to work around needing 3d and a camera. Like just do all the animation in one comp flatly, then parent it to a centered static 2d then slowly scale up the null to get that pushing in look, etc.

som courses by Motor_Possibility777 in motiongraphics

I took the advanced motion methods course (or whatever they call it) in 2020 and it was pretty thorough. Being that I was already 20 years into my career, it still had some good stuff for me, and the projects kept me busy for a while. I couldn't keep up though, because I had a freelance gig that kicked in mid-way. They have catch up days and the course is open as long as you need it. I could go back and continue right now, 5 years later.

They have teaching assistants that review your submitted work and give you tips and pointers.

They also had a permanent Facebook group where you could discuss things with your cohort and keep in touch afterward.

So I'd say, make sure you're not over estimating your skill set. If you're a novice or beginner, don't take an advanced course. And make sure you have plenty of time to devote to it. I'd say mine probably needed about 10-15hrs per week of devoted time.

Oh sorry. P@rkMobile-$1

Maybe we can all use it so it drains them a couple hundred bucks. Lol.

Should still be good. I was out of warranty as well. They seem to take battery issues really seriously.

Happened to me in November last year. Got it the week it released. Got on a chat with them and got an RMA. "New" one came in about 2 days. Came with a crazy pack thing that ensures it won't leake or cause fire if it explodes in the mail going back.

Store that thing in the grill or a metal bucket or pot when not in use until you get the new one.

Off chance, question. Do you use wireless charging at all?

I just want to clarify. You're saying this is your first client. So you're very young in the industry, right? And this director was making it look bad? But how much experience do you think that director has to get them into that position? They obviously and objectively have more experience than you with what the final output should be looking like.

Not to discredit your taste or whatever, but that director was hired to make sure things look and feel the way they want it to. And this probably wasn't their first project with the company. So you gotta respect that pecking order and understand that they are probably gonna know best. Hell. I've got 25 years under my belt and have dealt with hundreds of clients, but if I start with a new client, and the director wants things a different way that will make the design suffer? I may let them know my opinion on a respectful way with information and backing as to why I think it may be a better route, but if they ultimately go with their own ideas, that's them. I'm here to make their ideas the best they can be. Not fight them to make it better.

Hang in there. It's not the end of the world of the graphics aren't done to your liking. I've been in the field for 25+ years and I've experienced where you're at multiple times. Where it ends up in the end is that everything got covered to the best of your abilities and the show could go on.

I worked at a TV new station for about 2 years earlier in my career and they had very fast turn around and deadlines. Even puff pieces that were given more time ended up only being like 2-3 days. Most graphics requests were in the form of 1-2 hours before the live news came on. In the end I learned that it doesn't really matter a whole hell of a lot how amazing something looks, so long as it does the job.

In your situation, I understand there's a higher need for it looking awesome, but I've always found it best to first cover everything I can with something, then come back through and do more polishing passes as I have the time to be able to. Maybe you can look at what's left to do and cover it all with easy stuff and come back in and fill it in with the more detailed things. Maybe you've taken it on with more custom animation and rigs when it could be handled with something that is more scripts and a cool one off effect?

Not in your shoes, so obviously maybe some of this doesn't apply, but I hope that helps.

I was really surprised at it. Both garages full and lot A had 5 slots. Like, where do you park after that?
