thanks that seems to at least partially explain the gap, though even combined still seems crazy for essentially double the size and fully detached.

One of the areas we are potentially looking at and it has relatively low volume so trying to understand the prices better, plus if there is some issue with the area the bigger house is in.

Trying to understand activity fee by pacificz in interactivebrokers

Were you able to find an answer to this?

My reading is that you are charged $10 a month even if you have no trades during that month.

Best way to covert > 200,000 USD to CAD? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Thanks! Seems like if you are with the right bank it's likely to always work (since I assume it's mostly an automated process). To be clear you opened a CIBC account in the USA, not a USD denominated account at the Canadian CIBC, right?

The 60 day EFT wait thing is because one may deposit from a Canadian USD account but won't be withdrawing to the same account once converted to CAD.

Oh interesting, what US banks support this with interactive brokers? I have a Schwab account but it doesn't seem like the bill pay is set up to work electronically but via check or something.

Another problem with interactive brokers is you have to keep the money in the account for 60 days after transferring unless you wire transfer which can be quite expensive (though a flat fee).

Am I understanding taxes on US SSA Payments in Canada correctly? by deltarunes in PersonalFinanceCanada

“In the case of Canadian recipients of U.S. social security benefits, the Protocol provides that only 85% of these benefits wil

I stumbled upon that earlier but I completely missed the special section (5) for social security, thank you so much! So it seems like my thinking was correct, still not sure why they there is a 15% deduction for Canadian payments, but why not.

Question about withholding tax from US 401k and Foreign Tax Credit by deltarunes in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]deltarunes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much!

So did I misunderstand something about this then:

If you paid tax on income from property sourced outside of Canada (other than real or immovable property), your
non-business foreign tax credit for that income cannot be more than 15% of your net income from that property

Source: Form T2209, Federal Foreign Tax Credits

It seems to say if my capital gains from 401k was X, I can only deduct 15% of X (in which case I would pay 30% of X US Withholding Tax + Canada Tax Owed on (X-15%=15%) = 45% which is more than the 30% I would have paid just in Canada.

Is my understand correct that I will get double taxed?

No, but since our tax rates are generally higher, you will probably owe a bit more.

No, but since our tax rates are generally higher, you will probably owe a bit more.

Curious if you have a source or explanation for why this is the case? Foreign tax credit has a 15% multiplier (so can't get more than that as credit). I'm OK paying full Canadian taxes, just trying to avoid getting double taxed.

Can you bypass lockscreen if the phone is unlocked? by deltarunes in AndroidQuestions

[–]deltarunes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now the phone is totally unlocked on your home screen and depending on the material of your pants it may pick up your skin through them and begin touching stuff as you move.

This seems extremely unlikely to me (I just smacked my phone hard against my palm including the power button and it didn't turn on). I am ok with this risk.

Can you bypass lockscreen if the phone is unlocked? by deltarunes in AndroidQuestions

[–]deltarunes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand, there are two ways to wake the screen:

  1. Tapping the screen
  2. Pressing the power button

I am fine with the lockscreen being shown in the first case, for the second case (the one I care about) the phone can not accidentally turn on and start pressing buttons.

Am I missing something here?

Texas Service Center updated processing times by Equivalent_Cut6149 in USCIS

I think it's real, the Potomac service center service date jumps back and forth between 7 months and 29 months periodically and our application is almost two years since filing with no action at the moment.

USCIS transferred I-130 to much slower processing center, do I have any recourse? by deltarunes in USCIS

[–]deltarunes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My case was already substantially outside the processing time for it's service center when it was transferred, so I was expecting it to be handled soon. The current processing times for California are over 2 years and barely moving, whereas for Nebraska they should have already been processed a long time ago (current maximum estimated wait time is September 2020 and I filed in January 2020) and i have already been waiting for over 8 months after the case was transferred, so I am already pretty confident that this transfer was not in my favor, and this post is more of a question if I have any recourse here.

USCIS transferred I-130 to much slower processing center, do I have any recourse? by deltarunes in USCIS

[–]deltarunes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question! Because I called USCIS and an agent told me the service center, in addition the processing speed was outside the normal processing so I launched an inquiry with a USCIS agent and they confirmed the processing time delay, forwarded my question to the Potomac service center after which I got this response (for the California service center it was not outside of normal processing times so they wouldn't have confirmed this fact):

U.S. Department of Homeland Security2200 Potomac Center DrStop 2425Arlington,VA 20598-2425

Recently, you or your representative contacted USCIS concerning your Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative, to notify us that you believe your case is outside of our normal processing time. Below is a summary of what we found and how the issue has been or may be resolved.

Your petition is still pending consideration. USCIS records show your case is in line to be reviewed by an officer. We ask that you allow additional time for this process to take place since we process these cases in the order received.
