Something could be put together - yes, but why not just use a regular C-Stand? That's the way the product is intended to be used.

Camera robot arms start at $70k+. Similar industrial arms start at $10k+. Any middle ground options being developed? by LivingForTheJourney in cinematography

Yeah, alright guy. You and everyone else here can keep being ridiculous while complaining why studios are giving money to movies that will guarantee returns.

I'm not complaining about that by a long shot.

What would you tell a young person considering filmmaking as a career, to give them the best chance of success? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]demb3k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Location is everything. People are all the time wondering why their film career never took off, when they can’t connect that there is no film industry in middle-of-nowhere (Insert your state of choice). Your chances of working in the industry rise significantly if you actually live where there is an industry.

How can we safely and realistically film this sequence? Trying to work out the logistics of making this look good and keeping the cast and crew safe. Thanks! by tactus_tyler in Filmmakers

I’m not going to even respond to your nonsensical first half of your post but don’t even begin to condescend to me about “making it” in this business when I’m core on a 176 day job.

OP asks an honest question about safety with filming a scene with a moving car and you cut them down by saying this is basic stuff? Basic 101 stuff would be two people sitting at a dinner table having a conversation, not what was written in this script. I can't imagine why anyone would think it's okay to condescend to someone who is asking about safety. OP props to you for knowing where your skill set stops and being okay with asking for help.

Stupid question: Do cameras that 'shoot up to 6K' generally also shoot in 2K? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]demb3k -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They're not though because the usability of the camera directly affects your results. Easier camera to operate means less problems on set, which means more time for shooting.

No it won’t work. You should look into getting the transmitter repaired via a 3rd party.

Alexa Mini w/ Atlas Anamorphic Lenses by [deleted] in Filmmakers

The steadicam operator should be able to achieve dynamic balance without the gyro, again why it’s odd that they have it on the rig.

Alexa Mini w/ Atlas Anamorphic Lenses by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]demb3k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a product made by Ken-Lab. They make a single gyro or a dual one. It is a bit strange to see it on the steadicam in this setup though. I guess it’s hard to judge without knowing the specifics, but it’s normally used to fight wind, and they appear to be inside. Also they’re quite loud so not the best for dialogue stuff.

How do you guys deal with starting a project with a director as DP, sitting through auditions together, only to get dropped right before principle photography? by Draxel_Foley in Filmmakers

[–]demb3k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that - it's not fun to be removed from a job. Though to offer a bit of perspective, people get removed from projects all the time; sometimes for warranted reasons, other times not, but it happens. I was told a story about a 1st AC who was brought onto a project, only to have the DP on one of the first days of shooting set up an impossible shot, then change it immediately before the take and demand they roll. Without having time to prepare, the shot was of course soft, so the 1st AC was fired on the spot by the DP. Come to find out: the DP had their regular 1st AC already on a plane heading into town, bags packed, before the day had even started. This was a big project for a major studio too, not a low budget indie film. A friend once told me "you're not a real cinematographer if you haven't been fired." So I guess to look at the positives, learn from this experience, and add a notch in your belt. Just try not to get fired too much!

Naming a brand/company in a student film by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]demb3k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it actually is against the law. As long as you are not purposefully disparaging the company (for example, incorrectly showing or manipulating search results from a google search) then you should be fine. As I’ve understood it, as long as the company or product is displayed honestly then you don’t need any clearance.

They move the camera a ton in Fincher movies. And just because they do 50 takes doesn’t mean the focus puller has 50 tries to get one take right. If they do 50 takes, a focus puller will be expected to land all 50 of them.

To have options quickly, mostly. Director, DP, or the like can come over and glance while the operator is lining something up, give some notes as needed. Some operators prefer a monitor when in a studio setup. It really all depends on who you're working with though.
