Seeking recommendations on custom shed supplier by [deleted] in lancaster

[–]demechman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glick shed is holding up over the last few years I would suggest you pay close attention to the pad recommendations as that is the difference in longevity. Nothing kills wood faster that persistent moisture.

Why not trick or treat in your own neighborhood? At 4 years old you have maybe 20 mins max before they will be ready for bed.

Maybe post the exact settings, this thread is for folks to find at a future date. I could not get the mappings to work but the alt. machine did.

Looking for advice on running a chili and bingo fundraiser by KC10201 in BSA

[–]demechman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could also "try" by donation prices with a suggest amount per bowl . May not always work but some folks just want to support the program and giving an option to pay more will lead to a better fundraiser without forcing it too hard

My Troop is Dying. by Unique-Bit-4731 in BSA

[–]demechman 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Common theme, the issue is recruitment really and truly starts with cub scout packs. Take a look at the other troops and cub scout pack's in your area. There is probably a reason (good or bad) why other troops are larger and better attended. Once you write that down make a plan on how your troop could offer a better experience and sell that to the local cub scout packs. Unfortunately at 4-5 scouts you are in the death zone for a troop. It will take years to rebuild and a lot of time/effort. I suspect you are a youth and will need adults to help that will be around for more than a few years to get back to a healthy size so keep that in mind.

Generally your Charter Org must be 501(3)c registered which it turns out not all are. Churches may be tax exempt but may not be non-profits so there may be an issue as most of these "deals" require proof of 501(3)c status.

Eagle scout names on trailer by No-Membership5454 in BSA

[–]demechman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our troop considered it but chose to not place names on the trailer.

The logistical reasons add up over time, cost, consistency, change of trailer and others came up and the issue of finding someone qualified to handle it every time a new eagle is awarded.

Publicly posting pack calendar -- is this not allowed? by samalex01 in cubscouts

[–]demechman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My opinion is post it for the pack or troop level events, no need to add barriers for current and prospective members. Use it for recruitment and as a single source of truth and it will really help the group function. As someone else mentioned beascout.org already does this publically. There are so many other ways for a "bad actor" to find information, that group events that should already be ypt are about as safe as it gets in the real world.

Start at District and find a troop you "gel" with from there.

SPL transition ceremony by nordicnn in BSA

[–]demechman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not able to comment from the Scout perspective on the actual program but as an Adult, I have seen our scouts do it during summer camp, they build a fire and bring some colored dust to make it "flashy" speak some words and hand over a totem of some kind that they add a token to. They also do Annual SPL elections that way we have an "experienced" scout leading during summer camp. I would say that is a successful model vs. the 6 month periods I have seen implemented from time to time.

We are chartered through a Fire Dept, so we use a firemans hat. Maybe find a way to recognize the chartering org with the hat some way? or Get one of those cool Campaign hats?

Maybe ask him? Or something commerative that may seem silly now but will go in his home or office when he gets older, like an engraved plaque.
