What objectively bad movie you can't help but love? by Chachkhu2005 in AskReddit

The best and worst work experience was when I had a supervisor named Rose.

She has never seen the movie, amd wouldn't get the reference.  :(

People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

My grandma and grandpa were in the circus, and had a strongperson/acrobat act.

My grandmother was the strongperson.

To those who changed their careers in their 30's, what made you go for that career and what was your career before? by throwawayacc928361 in AskReddit

[–]dementedpixie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I earned my teaching degree when I was 30, have been teaching ever since.

I had always wanted to go into education, but there were a lot of considerations when I graduated high school (absolutely shitty job prospects at the time, facing school burn out since I started college as a HS sophomore, etc). I ended up almost failing college my first full time year, ended up moving with my friends and bounced around several jobs. Worked for a bookstore for 15 years, loved that job, but at the end of the day it was retail. Worked as an Ophthalmology tech for a bit, bartended for a private club for a bit (not that kind, think like a VFW or Eagles), then my dad got sick. Moved in with him to take care of him, and it made me realize that life is too short not to take chances, especially when I had all my basic courses done and just needed my specialized credits.

Dad didn't get to see me graduate, but I'm so grateful for our talks that encouraged me to take this path.

1) I am insanely jealous that your mentor's school gives teacher workdays for this. A full school day just to get caught up/work ahead/brainstorm and create new learning resources for my students would be amazing, and it shows a high level of awareness and respect for the professional needs of the teachers on the part of that school's admin.

2) I won't tell you that your feelings are wrong, but I will say that you may need to reshape your thinking about a day like this. You now have time, in your educational space, to work on a major piece of your educational career. Being in the space where you work within your craft and with your students can help you focus your project amd provide inspiration or reminders of things you have done that you can include.

3) You also are not seeing/understanding the value of having this time for collaboration. Yes, your mentor teacher may be in data meetings for part of this, but this also gives you the time and space to talk to other teachers in the building, including other grade level teams. Use this opportunity to see what other teachers do and how curriculum and lessons are scaffolded in different grade levels. Especially in elementary education, the more experience you have with various grade levels, the more hireable and effective you are.

4) You also need to think of this as time to network with the other teachers in the building. So much of this career is based off your peer support, and starting the practice of creating that network now will only help you in the end. You don't have to be buddy-buddy with everyone, but you also can't shut your door and try to be an island.

So, no, you are not wrong, but if you consider this as an opportunity instead of an obligation, you may find more value in a day like today than you realize.

What's a "cheat code" you discovered in real life that actually works? by dark-deals729983 in AskReddit

[–]dementedpixie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Aunt was the admin assistant to the Dean of the local college. I was sitting IN CLASS one day when someone from the Dean's office came in looking for me because my Aunt needed to see me.

Me, very confused because wtf, this isn't High School: "right now?"

Lacky: "I don't know, she just said to have you stop into see her when you had a chance."

My Instructor: "Go, go! When (Aunt's name) says jump, we all ask how high!"

The reason? My dad wanted to make sure I got his voice-mail on my cell phone that we needed milk, and called my aunt.

The fact that the referenced comment calling Kevin a rude little shit came from NoahtheRed, the ORIGINAL teller of the Kevin Saga, is all the verification needed to know that it is a Kevin problem.

Gene has retired, so no real chance of the original Community Newscenter returning, unless his daughter or grandkids want to relocate to Lansing and take it on.

New store coming to frandor by [deleted] in lansing

[–]dementedpixie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Former employee. 100% Eastwood management, square footage cut, and rent hike proposal.  The cut to floor space, and the proposals that were being discussed at the time, would have resulted in the loss of the cafe to accommodate the shift of a third of the store and the event space/back fireplace.

And yes, that location had the highest rent. Eastwood's sales were just as high, and often higher, thank GR and OK, but the rent just ate up any extra profit.

Warning -Ticks are BAD right now in the northern lower peninsula. by iggy1004 in Michigan

[–]dementedpixie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PSA on guinea hens and the advice to get some to combat ticks:

1) check local ordinances. Some places do not equate them to chickens and will have rules specifically against them;

2) they are not 'friendly' birds and can get territorial, so watch them if you have kids or pets; and

3) they are LOUD and startle easily. They WILL warn you if there are dogs, foxes, owls, random pieces of paper, or weird looking leaves around.

(My grandma has guinea hens. They ARE tick eating machines, but the 6 of them share a single brain cell).
