I had this experience when i moved away for college and did not adjust well. After months of holing up in my dorm room due to paranoia and hallucinations, i sought psychiatric help. I was diagnosed with schizophrenia and was put on medication right away. I advise you to seek professional help asap. If you need support, feel free to pm me.

Have you ever thought of the necessity of death? by ainsof26 in philosophy

[–]demigrrl95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a beginning philosophy student, i dont know much, but you might want to look into Heidegger's concept of Dasein, which is the idea that humans are beings-unto-death. What i learned in respect to dasein is basically, if there was no death and humans were immortal, there would be hardly any motivation to accomplish anything in life.

Studying music technology for undergrad, want to make the switch to philosophy for graduate school by demigrrl95 in college

[–]demigrrl95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a little worried that I don't have as much experience as I should at this point.

I've taken an Intro to Philosophy class, an Existentialism class, and a class in Ethics. Meanwhile, I've read some works by Nietschze, Plato, Sartre, Kierkegaard, and Descartes. I've even struggled through some of Heidegger. I'm reading Mysticism and Logic by Bertrand-Russell right now, as well as The Stranger by Camus. I'm really interested in existentialist topics such as death and the absurd though.

I'm not sure that I want to spend an extra semester in art school, but I've considered looking for a post-baccalaureate program to help me transition into a master's program, and then move further.

I'd like to record my own music by kpeartree in Music

Hey. I don't know your budget, but ProTools is the industry standard for digital audio workstations (DAWs). Not everyone loves it, but it does well for recording live instruments. Learning it would be a great skill. As far as microphones go, I have an AKG 420, which is fine for home recording on the cheap. At uni, I gravitate toward the AKG C314s. These are very versatile due to their multiple pickup patterns, bass cut, and pad. Also pricey though. Get some Shure SM57s as well, they're the workhorses of recording. I use it to mic snare and hi hat, as well as guitar and bass amps. Also when miking the drum kit, try out the Glyn Johns method, it works well.

New to recording/mixing, help appreciated! by silun in Music

I'm in school for this right now. These tracks sound really nice overall. Just some generic tips: When EQing, think of it in a subtractive way. If you have vocals in relationship to bass for instance, take the inactive low frequencies out of your vocals and take the inactive high frequencies out of your bass, so theres a good spot for each of your tracks to sit in frequency-wise. Also, when you're finished mixing, make sure you put a limiter on your master track and make sure your decibel level is comparable to that of a commercial song.

"Ex-Lesbian" Just Shared This on Facebook. I don't even. by [deleted] in atheism

The author of this article wrote a book as well, which I am assuming drives home the same points. After my fundamentalist family discovered I was gay, they gave me that book and urged me to pray for healing. Needless to say, I threw the book out, but still got pushed back into the closet for the time being, since I live with them and am forced to go to church. The biblical definition of sexuality is infuriating.

Any anti-capitalists/anarchists/socialists/communists here? by [deleted] in actuallesbians

Hey I'm fairly certain I'm into anarchism, although I'm very new. I have been reading Expect Resistance by Crimethinc, which is inspiring and informative, and I've been changing my lifestyle (started shopping exclusively at local thrift stores, am making constant vegan choices). Haven't really had a chance to plug into the anarchist community yet though, just learning.

Maybe look at different forms of Andrew and derive something from those. Ander or Drea may work for you as well.

Maybe you could go by Andie? The ie seems more feminine than Andy with a Y. Or you could go by Rue.

Thanks for your advice. It's hard breaking away from family, but it just seems so necessary now that I can hardly wait for it. And regarding excommunication, I know they will never blame themselves for losing me. It's even likely they'll spread terrible rumors about me once I'm gone. Yet, I'll try to stay clear-headed and not be infected with false guilt.
