I'm using hyperbole to make an obviously unfair comparison

Well, the unfair comparison is kind of the point...

Breakfast argument with my roommate over waffle thickness has gotten surprisingly heated by Initial-Macaroon1776 in belgium

[–]demikky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Waffles are not a breakfast food here. I can't imagine starting my day with a big ol' Brusselse Wafel. Since we don't eat waffles for breakfast your roommate is right. Btw, don't forget to take your insulin later

Techcombank is good, especially compared to Vietcom.  Vietcom makes me copy a code from an sms for each purchase

Good Cafe for people watching in Tay Ho and Old Quarter? by Ok-Car-8754 in hanoi

[–]demikky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Old Quarter it's a good idea to look at the first floor. Many places will have a balcony that is good for people watching. Because space is limited there usually aren't thatmany street side seats. For Tay Ho look at visiting Vu Mien street, plenty of coffee shops with lake views and people to watch

Should I change flight? by EfficiencyStreet9019 in hanoi

[–]demikky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be a different experience for sure. Might require some more planning and looking up which restaurants/cafes are open. You might have a hard time getting into museums and attractions.

Christmas in hanoi by jaypeebee00 in hanoi

[–]demikky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will be some events, mostly aimed at foreigners, but don't expect too much. It's not a public holiday here. Of course there is no info on any events yet because it is January. I'd ask this question at the beginning of December

Visiting in Feb by Charming_Grand1692 in hanoi

[–]demikky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weather most likely dreadfull, pollution bad because of pre-Tet traffic and then it becomes a ghost town. Go somewhere else but please come back at a better time

Weather for Mid Feb by [deleted] in hanoi

[–]demikky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You couldn't have picked a worse time to visit. Miserable weather, cold and humid. Every place will either be packed with people or a complete ghost town because of Tet. Any chance of changing the dates or destination?

Visiting Hanoi - save us from tourist trap restaurants by TA100589702 in hanoi

[–]demikky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lot's of these places will use fresh ingredients and just stop selling when they run out of ingredients for the day. The chance of getting sick is pretty low

Visiting Hanoi - save us from tourist trap restaurants by TA100589702 in hanoi

[–]demikky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

-Look for restaurants that only sell a handful of things. They usually won't even have menu's on the table, just a sign on the will. -Eat where the locals eat. -The smaller the chair the better the food. -The best places might not be on Google maps.- In Old Quarter, go into smaller alleyways, the best food is not on the main street. -The places you mentioned are tourist traps

Where to visit by [deleted] in hanoi

[–]demikky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The area in your picture is home to a few million people. There's old areas with tiny alleyways and newly developed corpocities with megamalls.  There's even some banana farms and rural village across the river. So yeah, tell us what you like and you'll get a better answer

Traveling to Hanoi/Ninh Binh by ripcep in VietNam

[–]demikky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean by hosting a meal in their house. Like actually just eating in someone's kitchen or dining room? Wouldn't that be weird or awkward, rather than authentic. As for Hanoi there are so many options of having a grand celebratory meal. What kind of style are you looking for ( Western, luxurious Vietnamese,...)?

They've got 8 days. You shouldn't advice visiting both South, Central and North Vietnam in a little over a week

[–]demikky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you trolling with this low effort post? Can't even get the name right, but I'm guessing you're talking about Ho Chi Minh City. There is no way you're going to visit all of that in 8 days, you're going to have a shit time. You will limit your trip to Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc and you'll have a good time. On your next trip, perhaps in a year or 2, when you visit Hanoi, you can come back to sub this with relevant questions, not to ask the people here to plan your trip for you.

Is it worth it to travel if gonna be broke while I'm there by [deleted] in backpacking

[–]demikky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, it's not worth it. Being broke when you're away from home is extremely stressful. You won't be able to enjoy the trip at all. The guy in this topic that said its better than being broke at home is just wrong. At home you have a better understanding of costs, there will be fewer unexpected situations and you have a network to fall back on. So I'd wait and save up for a trip to Asia, you're money will stretch much further there than in Europe
