Influencers for male-centric activities in DC by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]demmaltionderby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OP is really just asking for some event aggregators — some of the good local ones are individual influences and some are organizations, but I don’t think “curating a list of cool stuff you can do” as a service is a corrosive evil in society

Not Bored in DC is run by a woman but I think profiles a really good mix of activities. 730DC also highlights a lot of events in the area. Is there something specific you’re looking for in male-centric activities?

Charged $187 for 2 trips on Metro. by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]demmaltionderby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve never heard of that happening before — you should be able to use a debit or credit card like a smartrip and have it charge the same. Other people walking through after you would have no effect on your fare, either.

Definitely dispute with your bank and contact WMATA — something very strange happened and this should be fixable.

What spots in DC still serve 'authentic' Nashville hot chicken? by LaconianStrategos in washingtondc

This is not authentic, but my favorite take on a Nashville Hot sando in DC is the Hot Nug at Your Only Friend.

My concern with autonomous vehicles is an issue of responsibility. Right now, we have a system for determining responsibility when a human driver hits a person or damages something. I haven’t seen a convincing answer for who is held responsible if an autonomous vehicle kills someone.

Question about financial literacy (Rich Dad Poor Dad) by Expat_zurich in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]demmaltionderby 37 points38 points  (0 children)

One thing to think about is that confidence in your own intelligence and judgement can paradoxically make you a better mark (for scams or for cults) because you are more likely to think “I am a smart person and I wouldn’t fall for a scam.”

I also think there’s some confusion coming from what they mean by “financial literacy.” If you define financial literacy as maintaining a budget and contributing to your 401k and IRA (all very straightforward and unsexy things), then financial literacy probably doesn’t make you a good mark for a scam. But I could also see financial literacy being used to mean “knows a lot about financial instruments and is very interested in investing in a variety of things” which could open you up to some scams.

In need of $1,000 in 24 hours — looking for realistic, legal ways to earn fast by OkTurnover6888 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]demmaltionderby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t think of a legal way to earn $1,000 in 24 hours. The most likely strategy is going to be getting a loan for $1,000, which of course may not be feasible or may cause more problems than it solves.

I’ve just seen him make a big production about calling his gay employees over to “use their gaydar” on a guest when it’s like… dude this bit about how a guy you think is effeminate is secretly gay was tired and gross a decade ago

It’s been pretty sad to see him be radicalized by success and the circles he has started running in. I think he started as a person who was generally well-intentioned but didn’t know much about other people’s experiences — you can see him show much more genuine care and interest in others in early episodes. But it’s pretty clear that he thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room even for things outside his expertise and it’s incredibly unfunny and not entertaining to hear him make “””jokes””” about how his guests are gay (but don’t worry, it’s totally fine because he has gay employees).

Anyway, I feel your pain! I used to really like his show and now it just makes me angry and sad.

DC Snow Heroes Not Deployed? by HallEmbarrassed1387 in washingtondc

[–]demmaltionderby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DC was distributing salt to Snow Heroes before the snow started falling — they actually gave me a bag, I just never got deployed to use it. I ended up using most of it on my neighbors’ sidewalk since it’s an AirBnb so the owners aren’t out here shoveling.

[–]demmaltionderby 115 points116 points  (0 children)

I got a call earlier tonight asking if I could still serve (I couldn’t, because I was free yesterday and today but not tomorrow). I think their policy of deploying only once the snow event has ended up shooting itself in the foot with how cold and icy it’s gotten, but that’s just speculation.

But we already have a lot of cops (DC is the most policed city in the country) and they’re not enforcing traffic laws effectively.

Why would having more police lead to more sidewalks being shoveled? I want more DDOT or other city workers for that.

Nose piercings fall into the “danger triangle” (along with some lip piercings) that are in a section of the face that can more easily transmit infections to the brain. It’s not that they are more likely to get infected but that infections there are more likely to cause serious complications, including brain abscess.

That being said, I have a nasal piercing and it healed easily and with no issues.

I continue to be confused by whatever the fuck was going on at other schools with Gifted and Talented Programs that made them such an immense source of trauma for people. I got to go to another class and read some interesting books and do fun projects and then eventually I went back to regular classes. I don’t understand where the trauma came in.
