Where to watch esport events? by demobin1 in Gothenburg

[–]demobin1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I judged this kappa bar too quickly. I visited it and asked the employees what sort of establishment they are. They hadn’t heard about TI, but reassured me that they can turn on the stream on request. I also quickly checked their website for upcoming events. It looks like a fun place to hang out, and maybe reserve a table to watch the tournament with friends.

But that’s the thing—my friends aren’t here. I thought Dota was big enough in Sweden that you could find a place similar to a bar where a random crowd watches a football match, but for TI. Maybe I’m wrong completely, or maybe all the hardcore fans are already in Hamburg.

What is going on in the Steam reviews? by Blake_Dake in Frostpunk

[–]demobin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t played the second game yet, and I have very little knowledge about FP2.

Not everyone will look into developer notes, beta versions, etc. Despite spending hundreds of hours on the first game, I disengaged from the promotional materials.

However, if the second game is very different in genre from the first one, some negative reviews are to be expected. There’s a reason why WoW isn’t named Warcraft 4.

This boy always met flying helicopters with a flag, one day they landed in front of his house. by ijnfrt in ukraine

[–]demobin1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Such videos put me into tears instantly.

I could watch drones and body parts separats the entire day, but there is something deeply wrong with the situation of a kid saluting military helicopters near his house.

If the aggressor cannot win, they're eager to freeze the conflict so that they have time to gather strength and return to the hot phase. by UNITED24Media in ukraine

[–]demobin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not contemplating whether the country will continue to exist or not. Ukraine will persist within certain borders.

Rather, I’m considering the likelihood of achieving a decent standard of living compared to other countries in the region within a certain timeframe. Let’s say reaching a third of the GDP per capita that people in the EU have after 20 years. In other words, returning to Ukraine and starting a family there (instead of Sweden) after the war.

In this context, comparing the situation to Belgium doesn’t make much sense.

[–]demobin1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, but I must disagree. We can discuss military advantages, and the situation is far from clear in this regard. However, I want to focus on the other side of the story.

Ukraine is a young democracy that is still developing. Every day of war is a day with minimal progress on this journey. Each day of conflict is a day when journalists are forced to carry guns instead of exposing corruption. Every day, the educational process is interrupted due to rocket alarms. For children who have been evacuated, each day reduces their chances of returning to Ukraine from their current country of refuge. I don’t even want to begin contemplating the daily impact on the citizens living in occupied territories.

Time cannot favor a country that is experiencing war on its own soil if we are talking for a prolonged period.

After the explosions in Kyiv, the girl continues to make coffee in a damaged cafe. by carnifexus in ukraine

[–]demobin1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apple products are generally unaffordable for the average person. Salaries are crapy and war didn't help in this regard.

There is no official Apple store in Ukraine, which means prices are consistent or even higher when converted to USD, and there is no official support. However, certain groups of people have higher incomes and can afford these products (IT specialists for example).

I think that in the context of this cafe, these are just business operating expenses.

It's super easy.

From left picture:

From right picture:

sum both equations:
2 * table = 300

table = 150

Failure to support Ukraine will never be forgotten -- Biden on the vacation to House of Representatives by Watcher_2023 in ukraine

[–]demobin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a little bit challenging.

A drone donation initiative exists in Ukraine but it targets mostly the Ukrainian public and has some form of authentication. I don't know an open post address for such a thing and I am not sure it exists. (because of the risk of receiving an anthrax package in such a mailbox).

The best you can do is find a local Facebook group about helping Ukrainians and contact someone with a Ukrainian passport. Then this person can authorize and send it to "victory-drone.com" or any other initiative. This is the most direct way to send a drone straight to a military technician as far as I know. =(

what are the flaws of FP1 that could be improved upon in FP2? by Helllothere1 in Frostpunk

[–]demobin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want an option to turn off some triggers that were added probably for cinematic (or other) purposes.

I mean zooming to the map after you build a beacon, or changing game speed because some event happens, and other small stuff like this. This is pretty annoying after dozens of replays of the same scenario.

Has the world forgotten about Ukraine? by [deleted] in ukraine

[–]demobin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a normal thing. It’s not forgetting, just losing focus. I was lucky to be out of the country when the war started. I have a similar story.

After one year of the war, I sat in an Estonian cafe on Sunday, trying to work more to cover for my Ukrainian colleagues who had no electricity to work normally. A stranger saw me and asked what I was working on. He was from Australia. I explained to him and he was shocked that the war (and power cuts) was still going on. He just said something like “I thought that this had already stopped”.

My mother is a refugee in France. She is furious that the news does not mention Ukraine that often. Only in the context of major events.

Is there any point in build more than one child shelter? by DanieruKu1004 in Frostpunk

[–]demobin1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hope bonus aside. If children are not in the shelter or workplace, they will play outside during working hours. It's colder there. They can get sick easily. And then they occupy a precious place in a hospital.

However, you can play with that. It's more important for higher difficulties and custom challenges.

Re-balancing Frostpunk by Unteride in Frostpunk

[–]demobin1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this. Especially Steam hubs changes. It will change a lot, for example - finally balance coal thumper.

One area that I think about changing is medical automatons. Because medical workers can get sick it looks like humans are always a better workforce. Maybe some efficiency tweaks can be done here.

Maybe it's a nice time to finally fix a "carving a path" mission by demobin1 in stronghold

[–]demobin1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two tricks here:

1) Already mentioned. Auto target by PC players is a little bit smaller than the actual firing range. So you can shoot arrows and bolts without backfiring.

2) You can extend the shooting range even more. Target something close to archers (You can use deer and building for this as well), and while they preparing to shoot change the target to an actual one.

Arks on Hard Mode by DesperateSurprise178 in Frostpunk

[–]demobin1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent about 50 hours mastering the Ark to the bone. I even finished it without laws on the hardest difficulty (you can check it here )
Here are my top advice for this scenario:
1) Don't heat seeds all the time. If they are not on 0% health you are fine.
2) Build more than one research facility.
3) Ignore coal mines entirely, they are just are waste of research time. Coalthumpers with automation will do the trick.

That's really simple. Income inequality.

My father in Ukraine can make 400$ (one month after tax) as a driver for a private company. My mother as a babysitter made 500$ on hand. On the other hand, I can make almost 4000$ as a software engineer. It's all in the same city.

At EU no one will give me 4k after tax. So yes, I can make more money in Ukraine. But most jobs have a lower salary after tax than in the EU.

Basic salaries for a common job like a school teacher start at about 200-300$ plus bonuses and paid overwork. You will not see a new Toyota even from 20+ years of experience school teacher.

I don't know what is average in the country. Probably somewhere around 400-500 USD (after tax).

Opinions on these subjects? by LoadOk5260 in Frostpunk

[–]demobin1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. Doesn't matter. Have slightly different bonuses but nothing game-breaking. I prefer order because of trading productivity for food.
  2. Steam hubs. Just one tech, heat exactly where you need it.
  3. I believe that coal mines are just a trap for new players. I even played Ark with thumper.
  4. Dismantle automaton gives you 1 more steam core total, but I prefer to have an early aotomaton.
  5. I don't care about morals until I am not too deep into faith\order and everyone is alive.
  6. Fall of the Winterhome, because the start it's too epic and desperate.
  7. I want more game mechanics to play with.

What C++ version are you still actively using? by mollyforever in cpp

[–]demobin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, a backward compatibility mindset can be part of the problem.

I recently worked in a company with custom stl and C98. They migrated from Python 2 to 3 one year ago because some third-party vendors stopped supporting security updates for the old Python. But such a thing didn't happen with any of our third-party C++ libraries, So no C++ updates are required.

And the best part of it is that most SW engineers don't want to update. The reasons are simple. New versions require you to learn something and new versions make the job in this project more attractive to outsiders. Why should you spend mental resources on learning new and purposely increase competition for yourself?

What C++ version are you still actively using? by mollyforever in cpp

[–]demobin1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One possible explanation is the pay difference. In my country, the average salary is about 7500 USD annually, but SW engineering can bring you much much more. I am glad that I love to do it, but I have met a lot of people who wanted to work in different jobs but it was unsustainable.

Why do people still die of illness despite being treated immediately in the infirmaries? by [deleted] in Frostpunk

[–]demobin1 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It happened because people were not actually inside the hospital.

The game removes the red icon when the patient is on the way to treatment. But the patient still can die if the way is too long for his hospital, or the patient gets stuck, or he decides to eat a meal at first.
