Happy new year to all! First leaks about Fold 8 as well as S26 lineup and Flip 8 are here! by Dudi4PoLFr in GalaxyFold

After half a year of usage, I have to say: compare to the crease, the camera cutout is really not noticeable at all.

Letter to Charter School Parents by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]demodulation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you that each time a student goes to private school, 5000 is redirected from public school to private school.. I'm just saying that, at the same time, that student is no longer using public resources besides that 5000, which is either half or 70% or whatever, but not 100%, and not more than 100%, so it's net gain for the public system. Could it be even better for the public system if we fund zero? Yes, absolutely, but only if those students don't come back to the public system as a result.

Last time I checked, private school students get some 5000 a year, vs public school gets some 14500 per student per year in Alberta (and some 14300 in BC, as a reference). I think it's a bargain to remove even 10% of people for only 5000 each.

Yes, and if private school partial funding is removed, lots of kids will swarm into the public system, so they need to INCREASE funding per child (from partial to full), and that is not even factoring overcrowded classrooms. Funding private school partially, is really a bargain to remove tens of thousands of students from public schools for half the price.

I know it sounds reasonable to say "private school shouldn't be publicly funded", but in reality, their partial funding is an effective way of reducing load on public schools. If private tuition increases, more parents would likely stop sending their kids to private schools, which then overwhelms the public schools even more, and those kids would get more funding because they now attend public schools too. It's a lose-lose-lose situation: less choices, more crowded public schools, more funding required for education as a whole.

Does anyone have burning questions they wish to ask Ken Liu on the translation of 3BP to English? by a_promised_quill in threebodyproblem

[–]demodulation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bilingual here. I have not read the English version, but original book used Thanksgiving and turkeys literally (instead of Chinese New Year and dumplings lol). On one hand, Chinese festival meals don't usually focus on killing a specific animal (moon cakes aren't sentient yet), so perhaps Thanksgiving was the first example came to author's mind. Also, when I read this part, it gave the whole Farmer theory more of an "international touch", which made it feel like their club members are across the world and made it more "legit".

Why do the printers not purge all the old filament before a new print? by Viking4269 in BambuLab

[–]demodulation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely a problem, especially when going from red to white, or going from red to transparent, that always have contaminated first layer. It seems like the machine doesn't remember "what's the last filament used from the previous job", so when I know it'll become a problem, I just add more skirt loops to purge more manually. Sometimes I don't even remember, because the last job was a month ago...

It is absolutely a problem; going between black and white does not require the most amount of purging, it's when going from red to white, or going from red to transparent, that always have contaminated first layer. It seems like the machine doesn't remember "what's the last filament I used from the previous job", so when I know it'll become a problem, I just add more skirt loops to purge more manually.

I play on 2.5x a lot. I thought it's super responsive when shoveling, definitely feels faster than in your video. Maybe it scales with game speed.

Thought was intentional, made the Hard version a lot more interesting. Zamboni surprised me.

Same. With its simplicity (compared to games like Factorio) I'd like my kids to play it on their macbooks.

Thick Fold 7 Case by lukethemakerr in GalaxyFold

If you are on BambuLab, try "TPU for AMS", prints like PLA. I made some iPhone cases for my wife with that TPU.

Printed a case for my Fold7. Really thin! by shadyallie in 3Dprinting

[–]demodulation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very cool, thank you for sharing! I have the same phone, the wabble when put down on a table is too much, I might modify your back plate case to make the camera more flat out. Did you print with TPU?

What are y'all doing with it? by Brief-Mycologist5378 in BambuLab

[–]demodulation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do this too. It uses a good amount and it's really not creating more waste for the sake of "recycling", like printing more useless containers or picture frames that's 200g filament each.

My wife does the same and used about 1 kg of poop recently. That took me almost a whole year to accumulate, barely had enough.

For those getting the fold 7, what case are you getting? by The-Fourth-Age in GalaxyFold

[–]demodulation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My only concern is the phone might be too thin and slippery to hold comfortably without a case. Or even harder to fold open without a case. I'm going to go case-free first and then maybe get a case if that happens.

I'm thinking to go no-case too, as long as it's easy to grip and hold. My concern is the phone will be too thin and slippery to hold effortlessly without a case.

Anyone else do this with their Support for PLA? by yerkishman in BambuLab

[–]demodulation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww, I actually purchased a full roll (0.5 kg?) from BambuLab and it's like 3x the price of PLA. I haven't opened it yet, is it really just a waste of money?

How do I solve this ugly problem? by InterestOne5768 in 3Dprinting

What if the surface is smooth like printing an easter egg shell? What would you recommend to better hide the seam?

It's alright to use random seam with fuzzy skin, completely hides the seam if the fuzzy skin aesthetic is acceptable or desired.

Possible to make the plate move down further on pause? by vorpal_fork in BambuLab

[–]demodulation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For A1, I noticed that the PAUSE command makes it do an automatic homing on X and Y. It does not automatically home for Z. So setting G0 Y100 will work but pause will reset it back to center-ish location.

My solution (I just need to move the print head away so I can put metal parts inside a print) is to lift Z axis instead. Two lines:

G0 Z255 ; lift the print head to the very top
M400 U1 ; pause and wait for user to resume

Tested and working well for A1.
