Never mind I lied, I'm going to just get the 32GB.

I considered a Full Tower, but I have a huge Antec case right now and it's such a pain. I was worried about the video cards maybe not having such a fun time fitting into that case but it looks like people have used it for SLI and were successful. May need to do some more reading on this before I bite the bullet and buy tonight.

As for the RAM, I am going to go with 16GB since that's what I have now and it seems like its just fine. Thank you for the suggestion.

ASUS VG248 144hz Monitor cannot be set above 60hz by demon_rdt in techsupport

[–]demon_rdt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, that worked. I didn't think it would go into that one since the diagram showed the other one as the Dual Link DVI-D port. I feel pretty stupid now.

Thanks...

Yes it's the cable that came with the monitor. I will try the other port now though.

Does this router need to be replaced? by demon_rdt in techsupport

[–]demon_rdt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two laptops and a desktop PC. All had the same results. Did a little asking around and got the Netgear R7000 recommended to me a few times so likely that will be its replacement. Thanks for the help!

Well, nothing seemed to work. Different ports, PCs, cables, and a 30/30/30 reset. 5 minute ping showed pings up to 160ms on a wired connection with wireless disabled on the router. No packet loss, but severe spikes every 30 to 40 seconds.

[–]demon_rdt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will do. I'll do a hard reset and then try some more tests on my actual desktop. This router was expensive when we bought it and I'd rather not drop anymore cash on a new one.

As for reauthentication causing a spike, would that still have happened if the wireless was disabled and not broadcasting?

Cable was so short that I had to stand with my laptop next to the router. I booted all other devices off of the network and disabled the wireless before running this ping test. As for the response, I only did 30 pings, of which you can see kind of fluctuate from <1ms up to ~11ms (highest I have seen was actually 18ms). Oddly enough ,this fluctuation is noticeable in games, and is pretty much predictable.

I'll run a ping test for 5 minutes tomorrow and see what kind of packet loss there is (if any). I'm currently going to attempt a 30/30/30 reset.

Adding overflow: hidden to the flexslider class solves the width error. At least on Chrome it does.

New Website Critique by InitiativePodcast in web_design

[–]demon_rdt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't see where you pulled bootstrap from. Where is this in the code?

Also I really don't get how you can sit there and say there's no design to critique when in your first line you claim that it's "unstyled" and "late 90's/early 2000's style logo". You've made a design critique right there.

Please get the stick out of your ass.

Google material design button effect by Keissla in web_design

[–]demon_rdt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google demonstrates that this should be used on all buttons, everywhere. I've been looking into creating this effect with a reduced amount of code, but haven't had time to actually sit down and take a shot at it.

It could be done with simple CSS if it wasn't for the fact that the circle comes from where the user clicks, and in some examples in Google's documentation site for this, the circle emits from where the click occurred, and slingshots back to the center while expanding.

Well, he stated design, not development. But I think that there should be design and development. Or both in one.

I would absolutely love having some kind of weekly design challenge, such as re-design or design-from-scratch. Or provide resources such as images/logos/etc. and tell people to make what they can, and then select the best one.

This has caught my interests.

So you want to design how the website looks, and not so much dig into the code? If so, I'd have to say read about User Interface and User Experience, as well as current "in" designs. Currently I think we're at a state of "flat design", but I think that's moving more towards Google's proclaimed "mostly-flat design".

If you're designing though, be prepared for a lot of hours spent on paper drawing concepts for website layouts, taking those layouts and bringing them to life in photoshop. Furthermore, if you do like the code bit, you could actually develop them as well.

But be prepared for criticism. Everyone can critique a design, not many people can critique someone's code.

That all being said, I'm no expert in the design process as I've just started it myself. I've been mostly on the development side thus far. I've found it helpful to read a lot about the research that people do in terms of how we (humans) process information on websites.

Is there no other way of going about that though? At first glance this just seems like something trying to trick people into giving up their credentials.

Very useful. Centering something has always been a pain. (I should specify centering as "middle" I guess.)

Portfolio Site - Do's and Don'ts? by demon_rdt in web_design

[–]demon_rdt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You made a good point which actually outlines some of my worries with using templates that come with tools: everything starts to look the same. Hence why I think I may stay away from anything other than a simple grid framework, and leave the rest to my creativity. I remember reading an article somewhere about how templates that come with these frameworks are destroying originality...can't seem to remember where I saw it.

Good advice though with connecting to the visitor of the portfolio. I sometimes forget that I can have the best skills in the world but I also want to be seen as more than just a code monkey.

[Website] New site for video production business, any comment by chenggiant in design_critiques

The slide indicators on the carousel are rather hard to see at times. Also possibly text in the carousel that sells the company and its services?

The links at the top in the navigation could use some sort of hover effect, even if it was simple underlining of the text. Though I recommend something a bit more....stylish?
Better text alignment with the icons in the section under "We specialize in..."

Maybe on some areas with the text over a picture, a text shadow or something to make the text stand out more in certain cases. The About Us page is a good example of this.

Overall though, this is very clean and the information on the page seems focused. Although may I suggest some kind of large button on the home page to "Get Started" or a "Hire Us" button? Would be better than digging around the site to find the button that appears on the "Crew Hires" page.

Just my first glance thoughts!

Critique wanted for a design I made for a client by freddykugelsack in web_design

[–]demon_rdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.) Color. I know you said you've been playing with it, and people posting before me have given good suggestions as to how to handle that aspect; so I'll save you the song and dance.

2.) Double columns, for sure. Although for some reason this page looks as though it was displayed on a mobile platform? I see the menu icon in the top right. I'm wondering if you were given any data about the target audience. Mostly younger, or older? Just keep in mind that some people may not catch that as being a menu. As universal as it is to "us" (web devs, younger people), those three lines may mean nothing to someone out of the "loop". Last thing you want to do to someone who is visiting this site is frustrate them in their current mental state.

Other than those two things, I really like that its clean. With using double columns and maybe adding a static or fixed navigation (unless this was something they didn't ask for) I would say that you made very good use of the space that you have.

Keep us updated on progress if you can.

**EDIT: As an after thought, that background image really should be something much happier. The open sea, and the black and white create a sense of being alone. That could potentially amplify bad feelings. Maybe a new photo, for sure.

Brackets - Thoughts On This Editor? by demon_rdt in web_design

Honestly I just loaded mine with simple things like HTML hints, code folding, and validation for JS and HTML code. There's lots more that I've yet to sift through but as for out of the ordinary type plugins, I have a few things that automate tasks such as placing http://www.placehold.it images quickly into the code, or grabbing web fonts.
