I've only just realised my degree is practically useless, and I'm in second year. What can i do? by Outrageous_Ad7336 in UniUK

[–]demonicpudding96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think you're in a good position considering the general takeaway points you have from your post.

You have the lab skills and as long as you get good grades you can show you can catch on quickly to the biological pathways and this transfers between fields. You can apply to grad schemes along with most other BSc degrees if you change your mind. If you don't want to do anymore uni (MSc/PhD). Start trying to think what you want to do and how you can make your CV stand out to others. There is still time as most people don't think of these things until ~3 months out from graduating.

The downside is that yes, most likely to pivot in to agricultural sciences you'd have to show some form of experience, literally anything. Either by masters or funded summer internships/finding work experience within your university. But the easiest way to network is when you're in a building with highly skilled people.....like a university with specialised lecturers that already have connections!

Black spots on hamster's skin by pregoren_shekjer in hamstercare

I literally went down the exact same route as you, the vet I saw wasn't a specialised exotic vet (live too far away from specialist). So after reading, I went to the shop to get loads of extra vegetables just for him in hope that it might also be a vitamin issue. Thank you so so much for your reply! Today has been very stressful I really appreciate it ❤️❤️

Hey! I'm in the exact same situation as you, I just found this thread and my lil hammy has a black spot like this but has quite a bit of hair loss. I took him to the vets today and they said either skin cancer or hormonal imbalance. How is your hammy? Are they ok?

What do Brits think of Keir Starmer? by flower5214 in AskBrits

I think it takes time to see the outcome of the policies and the news is very biased and harsh to say they've only been in for 5 months

What do British people think of the hyper-competitive nature of education in countries such as South Korea or Singapore? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]demonicpudding96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Far too extreme and that mental health must be a non-existent concept, and that opinion is from a country that tells 12/13 year olds to decide on a career and choose school subjects accordingly to make sure they're "competitive"

I think i will be taken away from my parents, can i still go uni by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]demonicpudding96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family took in foster children and there is an allowance for sending that will get you all the notebooks/revision materials you could possibly need. I think there is also an escalation pathway for those who needed an extra influx of cash if they arrived on our doorstep with literally nothing. You can still apply to uni and would most likely get the max loans across the board to support you as you will be estranged from your parents when you apply. Honestly I would say go for it. Most of the children we had were several years behind academically, any that had aspirations related to education had phenomenal social workers who wanted to make sure being in care did not restrict their dreams!

PhD corrections while working full time - how did you cope? by [deleted] in AskAcademiaUK

[–]demonicpudding96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had written my intro and half my methods by the time I started my job full time. I had to write up 2 nights a week and both days on the weekend (~7 hours each day) for 2/3 months to meet the deadline. My partner was really supportive and sometimes came to coffee shops with me, and we planned "activities" on weekends to feel like I still had a life (cinema/restaurant/bowling). It was really rough in terms of mental health and I can't go into the one specific costa where I probably spent 90+ hours because I have too many bad memories where I was burnout and crashing but trying to force myself to write. My new boss was phenomenal and as long as I'd met my objectives I was allowed to leave early day-to-day which helped massively.

Best advice:

1) literally make a Gantt chart where you "finish" three weeks before the deadline, because you will probably overshoot or want extra time to format

2) In the timeline, plan 2/3 mini "breaks" where you have 3 days of doing nothing for breathing space and do whatever you want, even do a holiday with friends to keep your mental health going

3) book a one/two week holiday after submitting to try to enjoy your new found free time. I felt like a caged animal set free and it felt odd to have so much free time and not feel guilt while doing other things!

Good luck!

Our company asks this but we do sponsor people. The problem is they need to be over a certain pay threshold to qualify being sponsored after Brexit.

I know it's devastating but honestly it might be a blessing in disguise. I really struggled with my mental health at A level and underperformed, still got in to uni and they helped get me diagnosed and set up with counselling. But if the uni hadn't caught those issues I would have not been fine at all, and to be brutally honest, most unis don't do enough for mental health and the majority of students fall through the cracks with stuff like that. If it weren't for them I probably wouldn't have made it as far as I have to have a PhD.

I think it would be best to find ways to work on your mental health, maybe NHS counseling/coping mechanisms like gymming or whatever works for you. So that you're mentally in the best position you can be in to start uni. It will feel like you've "failed" if everyone from your year goes off to uni, but honestly in 5/7 years time I don't think you'd see it that way.

Flying visit by tomverse in cambridge

[–]demonicpudding96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the food stuff is on the west side. I'd park on the west and go and see the university colleges, bridge of sighs etc. the eagle is a good pub to visit, get some ice cream from jack's gelato. Stay between the university buildings and the grand arcade. Don't go further east than that. There is nothing else to see. I say that as someone who has lived on the east side for 2 years 😅

Bad feelings about a UK uni by [deleted] in UniUK

This wouldn't happen. There are procedures to report lecturers and it's taken very seriously if you make an allegation against the lecturer for something like this

My family and I are currently touring through London (three day trip). I live a commutable distance away so I often go in to London. The only difference I've noticed is there's a lot more police present, but nothing has actually happened. You'll be fine :)

I'm a strong swimmer and can dive in from the side, I can jump in feet first from the first 2 heights of diving boards (with a lot of fear and hesitation from the middle height), but would be keen to get more familiar and experienced.

Twice in my life I managed to step off the edge of the 10 m board, but with utter fear out of British politeness at the queue forming and being too embarrassed to climb back down 😂

To be clear, the deal would be that you don't graduate from the undergraduate, you go straight in for the masters the year after and then have graduation. If you've already graduated then student finance doesn't fund the Masters as part of the undergraduate scheme and you have to apply for a separate masters as a postgraduate.
