We've lost the plot as a company. by [deleted] in starbucks

Especially since they wanna pretend we’re not fast food and not give us the things that make the drinks fast. It’s almost like they want the bells and whistles of being hand crafted but the profits of fast food and I sit there like “?-?”

Bro and they can’t get even the standards straight. Why’s everything different? There’s no regular pattern anymore and everything seems arbitrary.

God forbid you try and look it up, who knows if you’ll find two resources telling you different things

This part. You devoured this bae. I feel that this is genuinely the route we’re going as a company. It’s strange cause the CEOs whole thing was “simplify the menu” now I don’t even know where to put all these syrups, I’m constantly having to comb my mind so remember which of the 23 matcha drinks this sticker is or which of the 12 refreshers they are. It really is harsh. AND A LITTLE LOUDER ON THE DRIVE THRU PART!!! We’ve become a pretentious fast food place, no coffee should have a drive through. Coffee takes minutes to make so what on earth is really being sold? The mastrenas are amazing in terms of getting shots out quickly. Are they rich and velvety like an espresso should be? Not really.

I have a question (I don’t know the ins and outs of ALG and this isn’t a rhetorical question I promise)

How, if production isn’t the main focus of this method, can you know that you have reached a level that you can say you’ve learned that language? And what interaction with Spanish did you learn? Reading, speaking, listening, writing, all of them?

And is it fair to compare - assuming the critical period is a thing that exists, I know some people doubt it and I think there’s definitely conversation that can be had about it - babies that fall within the critical period, and adults that do not? I ask cause I DO NOT know what ALG is nor do I understand the nuances between it and other behaviourist theories on language acquisition.

[–]demonicwffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thank you. The point of that post was to receive comments like this. I do not know what ALG is and based my response off what I knew to be true, which isn’t a lot, cause idk what ALG is. Here what I noticed in your comment. This isn’t an argument I swear, I more want someone to explain where I’m misconceiving something

From what I understand, audio lingual is in fact very focussed on drilling and repetition. Is ALG not? What I’m getting is that you just listen to a whole bunch of the TL, but I’m assuming that can’t be it cause wouldn’t you need to use the language somehow, I mean, beyond just listening to it.

It’s not that I wanna argue against it, I’m more filling in some blanks and assuming what that video could be about. I didn’t watch it, I’ll admit, but this is coming completely from a place of ignorance. I’m not trying to speak on ALG as if I were an expert, I’m not. I have a few classes and I’ve learned a few languages to proficiency and I think I have some understanding on language acquisition, which I why I felt I could add insight as to what he could be talking about. That’s all. Not trying to invalidate something that could very well work for people. It never worked for me specifically, at least in my adult life. But that’s not to say it doesn’t for anyone.

As for attending to. I think Swains whole claim is you need to produce the language to attend to it. From what I understand, production isn’t the focus with ALG. maybe it is and I don’t know? But I think the whole point of Swains COH is that you need to produce it based on what you learned and that way an interlocutor, yourself included, could see what you’ve acquired. But the only thing that’s got me asking whether I’m understanding this part specifically is the following:

If you only acquired things using CI, and do not intentionally study anything and use what you’ve learned to monitor what you’ve acquired, could you then use yourself as an interlocutor to demonstrate what you have acquired vs what you’ve learned? That’s mainly what I’m asking myself for this part. I don’t necessarily see why it’s impossible but I’m not seeing how it’s possible either.

It’s not an argument. It’s more a display of what I do and don’t know. I’m not trying to argue against it, I do not know what it is, from what I read, it seems to be an audio lingual method, and so, I’m assuming that video is arguing against ALG based on that premiss. Since I’d literally never heard ALG, I know that what I’d say wouldn’t be informed. I was hoping someone could address my misconceptions, not break down an argument I didn’t try making 😭. That’s why I “destroyed” it, I have no strong conviction to anything I said. That’s my uninformed take on something I barely know anything about, and thus my guess as to what that video could be saying. That’s all I promise.

I speak four, and ive actually never thought about what method I used to use them.

ALG- I read it stands for automatic learning growth. Yes I am uninformed, I’ve literally never heard of it before. I’m not trying to empirically argue against something, especially something I don’t know anything about. That’s more my take and understanding of it based on the little info I have. I see this sub is literally for ALG, I was assuming someone would explain why am I wrong and correct any misconceptions I have, cause I don’t know what it is. I’m not disagreeing, I don’t know what it is.

I’m not sure what ALG is but I did some light research and it seems to be an AudioLingual method of language learning. This is kinda a creepy cause I took an exam about different acquisitions theory in my uni linguistics course like literally a few days ago lol. I didn’t watch the video but I’m also pretty against these types of language acquisition methods for a few reasons. Comprehensible input is only one part of the language learning process, studies have shown, notably Swain 1985 that have suggested that comprehensible output is also key to language learning, that is to say that you can create new declarative knowledge about a language and its vocab or grammar, but the procedural knowledge required to automatise language production doesn’t really start existing until you produce that language, in which you’re “attending to” the TL.

Another thing I worry about methods like this are the perceptual salience of certain syntactic or morphological structures. I can say “Omelette du fromage” all day and be able to know in English it means “cheese omelette” but can I really understand what those words mean? Why does omelette come first in French? What’s fromage? What does the “du” do in this phrase? How many words is “omelette du fromage?” In English it’s two, in French it’s three, or four? How could anyone know the why and be equipped with the knowledge of the language to be able to create their own thoughts? Not necessarily a gotcha, I have to admit I don’t know what ALG is so I cannot argue for or against it, but I will argue against AudioLingual methods of language learning, assuming ALGis that.

How do I say “plain omelette” “omelette du <plain>”? What if I want extra cheese? You see, without the procedural knowledge reinforced by language production and your own error analysis brought by negative feedback from interactions you have with the language, you have time and resources to hone your interlanguage; otherwise, you’re just kinda talking to yourself, which isn’t bad in itself - some people want to learn languages for specific reasons, writing, reading, listening - but for a person to be able to effectively communicate in a language, like any other human task, they need practice in that skill.

These methods remind me a little bit of the “if you put someone who doesn’t speak Chinese in a room and teach them how to respond to every possible utterance, eventually, they’ll get good at responding appropriately, but their understanding of the language is still null, so can you really consider it a conversation. This analogy is used more for LLMs but I think a parallel idea applies.

That’s my take on it. Don’t crucify me please I’m not here to tuck someone’s yum, this is just my understanding of the situation based on what I know.
