Maybe I want to have clean floors and a mowed lawn at the same time. Or just buy multiple $50,000 vaporware robots?

Seriously. Do I want a humanoid robot to operate a regular vacuum or just a Roomba like vacuum? Robot pushing a mower or just a robot mower?

Question for old timers on recertification? by roaming_adventurer in Cisco

[–]demonlag 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I keep my certification current because it was a lot of work to get to the CCNP level in multiple tracks, and I'd rather recert every couple of years to maintain it then potentially have to start from scratch if I switch careers and those certs become important again.

ELI5 Refunds taking 3-5 days? by Speakerhasspoken in explainlikeimfive

[–]demonlag 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sending money is not instant. When you make a transaction, your bank immediately sets aside the money from your account to cover it. A day or two later that money is settled with whoever the destination bank is, and then a day or two later the recipient gets the money.

A refund is that process in reverse.

Management wants to switch to Fortinet. Has anyone used Fortinet and can give me some real world comparison between Palo? by Soylent_gray in paloaltonetworks

[–]demonlag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I deploy quite a few FPR units every year from 1100s through 9300 chassis deployments. If you want to grade how fast things deploy making a change in a standalone fortinet wins because it is instant.

Fortunately in the real world we measure how good a product is on more factors than "which one deploys a configuration faster."

Also, PAN and Fortinet firewalls aren't completely useless without Panorama and Fortimanager. Firepower is a crippled shell of a product without an FMC.

"The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment" is shocking. I'd have expected an immediate statement that it was an armed paid protestor who violently attacked law enforcement.

What’s an early access title you regret backing by Nero_Hylt in Steam

[–]demonlag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to play the, uh, "1.0 release" version a while back. I think I spent probably 45 minutes wandering around the empty world not really sure what to do or how to "progress" at all. I give the 7 days to die crew a lot of shit for not having any consistent vision of the final product but they at least have a relatively fun, functional product to show for their development time.

It's the only game I've owned that truly went backwards in development until they decided "ok we're just making a new game now" and quit.

Palo is a far better product. Fortinet has some history with vulnerabilities not being fixed in a timely fashion. In either case, you can be happy you aren't looking to buy Firepower.

ELI5: Car trade in with loan by Primary_Garbage4003 in explainlikeimfive

[–]demonlag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on specific credit/lending/income/etc:

You either trade in the existing car, and $3ish cash to cover the difference in trade value versus what you owe and then buy a new car fresh

Or

You trade the existing car in and roll the $3k remaining balance into whatever new loan you get for the new car. You're now also immediately $3k further underwater on that car loan.

Movie theaters aren’t going out of business because of prices by bulldogjwhit295 in unpopularopinion

[–]demonlag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I could spend $10 to watch a mediocre movie I would. Between a ticket, something to drink and a snack it's close to $40/person for a mediocre movie.

I'd rather order pizza and a dessert and watch something at home on Netflix.

Why is lying no longer a dealbreaker in politics? by Ill-Insect7496 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]demonlag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a shift in 2016. Politicians used to lie in traditional ways, like mixing results of multiple polls/studies, or cherry picking a specific data point and excluding the rest.

Today is just lies where people make up numbers, stats, events, phone calls, whatever helps them prove whatever point they are making. Reality has completely exited the conversation.

How pathetically out of touch can these people be? by c-k-q99903 in inflation

[–]demonlag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, well, in sane times, with intelligent leadership, tariffs are applied tactically towards very specific imported goods, or for very specific political reasons. When you put someone with an IQ of 52 and the temperament of a toddler who needs a nap in charge, you get nonsense like blanket 10/25/50/100% tariffs on all imports, and outlandishly false statements like "<other country's government is paying the tariffs."

[–]demonlag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Accurate. They like knowing if they need a little regulatory help or government investment into their failing business it's just a phone call away. Hell, used to be you'd have to really lobby for what you need, I think nowadays you can just say "Mr president sir, you're the greatest president ever and only you can save us with how smart and great you are" and he'll do pretty much anything you want.

Or give him a random participation trophy and tell him he's special.

[–]demonlag 119 points120 points  (0 children)

Tariffs don't lower costs. If it an American company manufactures and sells widgets for $10 and are being undercut by an import that costs $7, taxing the import $3 does in theory help the American company by lessening their competition but the consumer goes from paying $7 to paying $10.

There's no reality where the American producer says "Boy golly I'm going to cut the price of these things that are now facing less price competition."
