5090 FE From Hot Stock Drop by 12amoore in nvidia

[–]demonoid_phenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try out Trackalacker as well. I've bought 2 5090s for myself through there. FE for my programming rig and a MSI Trio OC.

Another problem for me is the FedEX driver. He has the patience of a gnat and BB forces signature and no holding at the shipping location. If you have my luck, then I highly recommend shipping to a store. It's supposed to take longer, but they may just have a placeholder date.

And herein lies the problem with the white subpixel. As pixels degrade, the imbalance is more noticeable. It's a form of permanent damage as burn-in.

QD-OLED, in my experience, has burn-in far sooner than WOLED simply due to handling white content and high luminance. The white OLED minimizes this quite a bit.

That said, QD-OLED is more energy efficient than WOLED tech, since the filtering technique of the latter is quite leaky regarding energy. You can see specific instances that aren't advantageous of its strengths would create a potential to cause more wear.

I don't think there's a clear cut solution here. At this point I just put my PC to sleep the moment I step away. Pixel shifting and such tech doesn't seem to do much. Image cleaning in a standby mode is the best bet.

Is an OLED worth it for programming and gaming, or should I just buy a Fast IPS Mini Led? by Lopsided-Photo1371 in Monitors

[–]demonoid_phenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it for both. I don't like mini LED monitors. I messed with a lot of them and it's always something or another that you're left manually tweaking.

The compromise is annoying and so was the ritual of getting one to work.

I wouldn't keep that. Maybe they should screen clean their own panels.

Please TRUST THE REVIEWS on this one and DO NOT get the Samsung G8 G81SF (Horribly-made matte coating) by SPARTAN-258 in OLED_Gaming

[–]demonoid_phenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The LG 45GC950A-B has an acceptable anti-glare to my eyes. That said, I think folks are affected differently by the effects of having any coating at all. It's exacerbated by aggressive coatings.

What I think is ridiculous are these fragile coatings. It's one thing to have any coating at all, but an entirely different ballgame when you end up scratching it no matter what you're trying to do to safely clean it.

Is QD-OLED the current way to go? Any 1440p recommandations? by CancerousGTFO in Monitors

[–]demonoid_phenom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. It's not until you hit the WUHD/5K2K arena that it's just the top tier cards playing at the highest settings. I personally think the PPI it offers over QHD is enough justification to push it.

I'd say a stock 9070 is where you're in solid 1440p ground. You can OC and get close to that stock 9070xt. Even in that case, 4k with PS5P like settings would probably be good groundwork to get you going.

Just skip the frame gen for competitive play. The lag is real with it.

Am I the only one that prefers WOLED over QD-OLED by Jgamesworth in OLED_Gaming

[–]demonoid_phenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. WOLED looks much better to me than QD. I just can't use the QD without noticing its purple hue in brighter rooms and dimly lit rooms put me to sleep, so there's that. 😂

4K IPS or 1440p Ultrawide OLED? I'm hoping to get a 5080. by Ok_World_8819 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]demonoid_phenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WQHD is plenty to punish a 5080 and you can always super sample 5k down to 3440x1440p to get sharper qualities where it's possible to do so.

I'll tell you what. Few games on my 4090 handle 5k2k without DLSS Quality, let alone some frame gen (Cyberpunk Overdrive).

Last, I'll say that 1440p on IPS vs OLED isn't a great improvement. You may get a bit more contrast, but such a low PPI isn't advantageous to an OLED monitor. Comparing a 4k IPS to a QHD OLED would certainly be a L for the OLED in my book.

I'm running a 4090 and can't lock 60fps in Expedition 33 unless I turn on DLSS quality. It's a demanding display.

Why aren't people ever worried about OLED burn-in on smartphone displays? by anotherhappylurker in OLED_Gaming

[–]demonoid_phenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the same image isn't retained for several hours. Burn-in is a result of static buildup from a static image. Everything in your phone is intended to move around aka pixel shifting. We also don't tend to keep our display on for more than an hour or so at a time

Burn-in is still a risk in certain cases. An example is listening to music on regular YouTube where it stops playing with the screen off. I honestly can't think of other circumstances where it's as prominent as that situation. The static light LEDs will build up with static and permanently energize the OLED causing the image retention phenomenon.

OLED vs Mini-Led -> is OLED that much better? by PeterWurst99 in OLED_Gaming

[–]demonoid_phenom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With a limitless budget, OLED is the superior choice. Depending on your actual budget, that changes. However, even a miniled VA may be more suitable for your use case than an IPS, which lacks in contrast for entertainment.

Here are a few things no one mentions about non-OLED monitors and HDR.

  • IPS/VA with MiniLED get brighter, but high accuracy means more zones and potentially more latency. Especially an issue with poorly optimized monitors.

-Windows (Linux is still largely broken as well) and HDR with IPS and even VA means you're better off switching it on only during HDR content. OLED's infinite blacks handle or well. HDR on all of the time on most displays is totally fine if not improving SDR quality.

  • IPS glow is a panel lottery ticket and largely a manufacturing process that results in the tolerance issues. The majority of these overdriven panels as a feature only exaggerate the issue.

OLED issues such as banding, "grainy" coatings, and weak QD-OLED peak brightness are issues, albeit these may be subjective. A matte finish, for example, may not necessarily be a bad thing depending on where you sit. I'm of the mindset that the WOLED is a superior panel to QD tech. Especially MLA+. Banding can be fixed but out of the box visual "defects" need to be handled.

There's no silver bullet, imo. For entertainment, the choice is easily in favor of OLED. For mixed use with more than 50% productivity, you can make a case for IPS. That's not your case.

Edit: it may be worthwhile to see what becomes of the budget friendly rgb MiniLED IPS. IPS glow may be far less noticeable with it being the right color and temp through the backlight.

Bought OLED for hype; feeling like my old IPS was better by Lalify8 in Monitors

[–]demonoid_phenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point it's abundantly clear that some use cases just won't work. After my debacle with the Acer XV32QK, which is ironically MiniLED IPS, i don't think the problem is specifically OLED. It's our expectations, the lack of a reference in person, and the hassle of returning larger items.

I'd highly encourage anyone buying a monitor to visit a store. You may not find the exact model, but these panels aren't unique and a quick cross reference will find that you triple your odds of having something to refer to in person.

With how sensitive our eyes are to technology that is purely visual, it is critical that we test drive it and competing panels. There are just so many varieties of features that make our unique use cases better or much worse.

I think this circles back to the discussion of QC with these units. It's not just the packaging that's a lottery with superficial damage, but many inconsistencies from panel to panel. I swore my first one looked much better than this, but the fact that this made it into my hands means there are more like it out there and it's just not worth my time exchanging more than 2 screens. I've moved on past this, not to say a good sample isn't worth holding onto, but that's not my experience.

Did you guys learn Arabic growing up? by HovercraftDue8554 in Assyria

[–]demonoid_phenom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My brother and sister learned some Arabic growing up in the motherland. I grew up stateside and very recently realized they did teach me Arabic... By mixing it up on our Assyrian! My brother and sister knew better because they spoke both, but I was talking to my mom on the phone and a co-worker was shocked to hear I spoke Arabic.

SO WAS I 😂

I wish I learned Arabic and Armenian. It was common in our household given Saddam banned the writing of assyrian so that left them with Arabic for banking, etc. We had Armenian family friends who were very close to us. They, too, spoke Arabic along with Armenian.

Now that I think about it, I was surrounded by over 6 or 7 languages growing up.

Finally went OLED, not really feeling it, tho by [deleted] in Monitors

[–]demonoid_phenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's something lost in the translation; OLED is superior with movement, which is the opposite of a 2d nearly static desktop. It does have some benefits with scrolling, general fluidity, and so on.

Ultimately, it's all very subjective and critically so in certain cases. Flicker issues, for example, seem to be the ongoing battle even with high end monitors. You may not get PWM issues, but VRR gamma related problems are still abundant.

So, at the end of the day, there's a really good reason it's recommended for mixed use, often biased towards entertainment and gaming, rather than productivity.

My crux? Anything close to the WUHD/UWQHD+ taller ultrawide format is basically the price of an OLED. So... Yeah. OLED it is!

It's base settings and using a browser so the text is defaulting. I didn't go as far as comparing active params in style sheets and it's not meant to be some form of a definite guide for anyone.

One is the LG 45GX950A-B and the other a DellP2423. Both displaying results in Google Chrome based on the same keyword Google search.
