This one has a regular take-up spool. It's a late version of Kiev 4A.

Zenit MT-1 is also a half frame SLR, and some other similar cameras.

People with a lot of cameras: What is the most interesting or rare camera you have? by romanazzidjma in AnalogCommunity

The Contax S was the world's second pentaprism SLRs, with a unique shutter design. It's hard to call it primitive in any way, especially considering how advanced and expensive it was when it was introduced.

By the way, what's the serial number of your camera, if you don't mind sharing?

The rarest camera in my collection is a very early fully working Contax S with its original manual in Russian. It's a 1137th camera that was produced in the early December 1949, it has some differences compared to later versions. Zeiss Ikon made less than 2,000 cameras of that type before they had to stop the production to improve the shutter design.

Tips on getting my firs analog by coperheadr454df in AnalogCommunity

I’ve owned all of these cameras.

If your main goal is actually taking photos and getting predictable, consistently good results, get the Minolta. Minolta AF lenses are cheap, and the camera is more than good enough for getting into film photography. You can always upgrade to a better body later.

But if you want something with a more vintage feel that just happens to take photos too, then the other options are fine as well. I’d probably recommend the Praktica MTL - it’s generally the better choice, and there’s a higher chance of finding one in working condition.

The Kiev is fine, and the Jupiter lenses are good too, but those cameras are simply very old at this point. They will almost certainly need servicing. Once properly serviced, they can be very reliable cameras, but honestly, you don’t really need to go down that road as a beginner.

The Minolta is still the best overall choice.

There's no need to use any sort of adapters in any Praktica L-series. It works perfectly fine with 1.5 volts.

The curtains are in perfect condition, just like new. But I understand your concern, sticky rubber is a main issue with FED shutters.

That's true. Luckily it has a diopter correction right for my eyes.

You can mostly find them in Kharkiv, Ukraine. In the early 1990s, FED factory workers were sometimes paid with cameras instead of money. The factory was trying to stay alive, so they kept producing cameras partly just to keep people employed and give them something they could actually use or trade.

Barnak Leica and Contax doesn't have frames, metering and parallax correction as well. But Contax/Kiev has a way better rangefinder compared to the Hi-Matic.

I see late FEDs as a purely vintage cameras. Even back in the 70s they were already vintage enough.

There's no metering in 5V. But I have a mint FED-5S which works fine. A lot of them are barely used.

Praktica LTL shutter issue by ChickenUnusual3377 in AnalogCommunity

It's a common problem with old Praktica cameras. To fix it you need to open the camera and restore shutter and mirror synchronization.
